| 1 | VideoThat Media Show - Nov 17, 2008 | November 17, 2008Hosted by Morgan CullenTHE GUERRILLA CG PROJECT is a resource for helping people learn CG, or "Computer Graphics" and features tutorials from industry experts like; Andrew Silke, Glen Moyes, Greg Petchkovsky and Jake Hempson. GUERILLA CG PROJECT teaches the fundamentals of creating high-quality 3D characters, places and things. They have tutorials for 3D Studio Max, Blender, Cinema4D, Maya, MudBox, SoftImage XSI and ZBrush, with more to follow. The site is technically in "Alpha" right now, but you wouldn't know it and... it's free.Tim Burton's ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND has been cast. Anne Hathaway, from the PRINCESS DIARIES, plays the White Queen. Crispin Glover will reportedly play the Knave of Hearts and, of course, Johnny Depp is the Mad Hatter. Burton has said, "this film will have a gravity that other versions haven't." Expect high oddness from Burton, who's smartly cast Helena Bonham Carter, from Fight Club, as the Red Queen. In other strange Hollywood news, we're hearing rumors of a remake of the popular film, Dirty Dancing, which will star MARIO LOPEZ of "Dancing With the Stars." Patrick Swayze, the lead in the original, has said, "I think the original really stands up well and both leads were great. We seem intent on re-making everything right now!" So true, Patrick. There are even plans for a FLIPPER movie, think Lassie with a dolphin... seriously. There's a new Watchmen poster, which looks pretty hot.Joe Johnston has been slated to direct Captain America. Johnston previously designed vehicles for STAR WARS, did storyboards for RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and was involved in ROCKETEER (which we loved) and OCTOBER SKY. Even though a script hasn't yet been written, Marvel plans to release the film May 6, 2011. And, they're doing AVENGERS in 2011, then THOR and the IRON MAN sequel. Go, true-believers!The RED Build 17 was released from Beta. According to reports, it has support for RED 16 Gigabyte flash cards - which is awesome - and embeds timecode in HD-SDI output - also awesome. It also includes a 4K HD recording mode with 3840x2160 pixels.By the time you see this show, the RED Scarlet and Epic announcement will have been made. Jannard was busy "leaking" pictures over the last few weeks, which has created a lot of speculation about the cameras. Let's take a stroll down memory lane:Interesting.Interesting.Interesting.Interesting.Hmmm. Interesting.Oh, and if you're looking to purchase a RED One camera, they are officially available and no longer on back-order. No wait, starting now.Pixar's newest teaser trailer for their upcoming movie, UP, was released into the wild. UP is directed by Pete Docter, director of Monsters, Inc. and a writer of Toy Story and Toy Story 2. The film is co-directed by Bob Peterson, who wrote Finding Nemo.Clive Barker, one of the best horror writers who ever lived, wrote a series called "Books of Blood" which our producer read multiple times as a teenager. Now, true horror fans can delight in the trailer for the upcoming BOOK OF BLOOD movie! The screenplay was written by Darin Silverman, who has literally no screenwriting credits. It is co-written and directed by John Harrison, of TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE. It's bloody, brutal and beautiful, in that holy-crap-I-can't-believe-I-Am-Seeing-This kind of way.Speaking of Horror... GARDEN OF EVIL is in pre-production and the Mandarin thriller HELP was just completed.Oh, and True Blood just keeps getting better every episode. And that's it for this week. I'm Morgan Cullen and this has been the latest episode of the internationally acclaimed, award-winning, ever informative THAT MEDIA SHOW.-- Links --Guerilla CGhttp://www.guerrillacg.orgAlice In Wonderlandhttp://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2008/10/alice-in-wonder.htmlWatchmenhttp://latimesblogs.latimes.com/herocomplex/2008/11/fi | 11/16/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Scott Simmons, of the Edit Blog and Paul Zadie of Imaginary Digital have a long discussion about Hollywood, post production and Avid vs. Final Cut. If you're into post-production, it's a great podcast. If you've ever wanted to understand a P2 workflow with Avid, head over to Final Cut Pro 2 Avid's site and check out "Using P2 with Avid" - it's a good read and helps walk through the process.Christopher Holland, who worked for the Austin Film Festival, has published FILM FESTIVAL SECRETS: A HANDBOOK FOR INDEPENDENT FILMMAKERS and is giving out free downloads on his site. There's also a book, which costs $24.95 and is available at Amazon and other bookstores.Want to see some great shot breakdowns for the amazing "Look What's Inside" commercial from Gravity? Well, Motiongrapher has a link and the video is just amazing. We've watched it about a hundred times.Ever wanted to know how to get better greenscreen footage with the RED camera? Art Adams has a great blog entry at ProVideoCoalition which has the details. It goes into painstaking detail and talks about filters, like the 80D blue filter, as well as tungsten lights and a lot more.Scott Kirsner has written a book called INVENTING THE MOVIES which discusses the hidden technological history of Hollywood. It's a kind of "brief history of everything Hollywood" and goes through the struggle between innovation and business as usual. It's a great read and can even be purchased digitally from LULU.Did you see the holographic version of Will.I.Am during the election coverage on CNN? Well, we did and so did fxGuide. They have a good breakdown of how it works and a brief discussion of the history of the technology. There are so many new movies coming out, it's hard to keep track of them all. Some of our favorites are:The InterNetrix - A story of Cody "Code" Smith, a lonely man living in cyberspace, a master of virtual reality, who has a virus attack and kill his friend in cyberspace. The villain is Stephen Barrier, the computer mogul and cyberspace serial killer. It's world class cheesy.Or, if you're into horror, Carnival Evil is the movie for you. Five strangers are abducted and wake up in an abandoned carnival. They are cleverly tortured and killed using only carnival games and rides. There's even a surprise ending! And, if you want something a little lighter, look for Céline - the story of Céline Dion... discovered at 12 by her manager and future husband, Céline tells the story of plastic surgery, torrid love affairs and internal struggles. It's a classic rags to riches story.Speaking of movies, VFXWorld lists the top ten holiday movies of 2008, along with a peek into some of their visual effects. We are certainly looking forward to Benjamin Button, the new David Fincher film, as well as Frank Miller's THE SPIRIT (which Stu Maschwitz did work on), but we have to admit, even with Adam Sandler in it, Bedtime Stories looks interesting. And, of course, Twilight is coming out on November 21st, so put that on your calendar.Have you seen SUBWAY? It's the film shot by Matthew Bennett and shows off the D90 camera. DVXUser has an interview with the filmmaker and a discussion of how the video was put together. It's worth watching and it's worth checking out the rest of Matthew's work. And, finally, if you liked Monsters, Inc., you'll probably enjoy the Dreamworks "MONSTERS VS ALIENS" trailer. It's a kind of inspired-by-other-films movie directed by Rob Letterman, who also directed Shark Tale. Seth Rogan plays the voice of BOB and Paul Rudd and Hugh Laurie and Reese Witherspoon, a | 11/8/08 | Free | View In iTunes |
