Android App Show 75 – Android Over iOS, Business Edition | Patent News Apple cries “Monopoly” over Samsung and Motorola using their patents to defend themselves agains Apple’s lawsuits * source (http://www.dailytech.com/Apple+Cries+About+Samsung+and+Motorolas+Patent+Monopoly/article22586.htm) * Yes, really really * There are a set of patents that have been used to establish industry standards for wireless communication * There is a sort of “gentleman’s agreement” that these patents will be licensed to whomever wants to get in the mobile industry * Apple is claiming it isn’t fair to use these patents when counter-suing Apple against the suits Apple has filed against Samsung and Motorola * Basically Apple has really stepped in it now by going for the throat and having Samsung’s products banned, or at least attempting to. Now Android manufacturers are striking back in ways Apple’s legal team didn’t imagine. * Time for an exit strategy? Apple could be preparing to sue Google directly over Android * source (http://www.infoworld.com/d/the-industry-standard/apple-preparing-legal-assault-google-over-android-171973) * In a filing for their case against HTC (the oldest Android patent case going now) Apple is now claiming that Andy Rubin had access to certain information that eventually let to iOS/iPhone/iPad over 20 years ago! * Kind of a stretch, but one should be concerned because Andy Rubin is now THE Android guy at Google. Acer and Viewsonic sign patent license agreements with Microsoft over Android * source (http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2108112/acer-viewsonic-sign-patent-license-deal-microsoft-protect-android) * No word on a price, but likely in the $10 to $20 range per device sold. Google sold some patents to HTC and now HTC is using them in their fight against Apple’s lawsuit. * source (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/news/8749797/HTC-uses-Google-patents-to-sue-Apple.html) * They are trying to settle out of course by getting Apple into a cross-licensing agreement. * Nine patents that Google bought from Motorola, Palm, and other companies less than a year ago. Quick News Samsung unveils ChatON service to compete with BBM, iMessage, and Google Talk * source (http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-unveils-chaton-service-to-compete-with-imessage-bbm-and-others-29174790/) * Just another reason to think Samsung is close to pulling out of Android and either pushing forward wtih BADA or buying WebOS from HP. Scala is a possible alternative to Java when programming Android apps * source (http://www.infoworld.com/d/application-development/scala-the-android-programming-language-you-didnt-know-you-had-170999) * Everything still has to go through the Dalvic VM code interpreter so the Oracle lawsuit can’t be solved by switching to this language. Chomp will be powering app search in the newly redesigned VCast App Store, simpy calling it “Verizon Apps” * source (http://venturebeat.com/2011/09/13/verizon-apps-store-chomp/) Make sure you watch the Android Tech Show for big news on the AT&T merger with T-Mobile (hint: it ain’t gonna happen) and our review of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 App Reviews This week is a widget spectacular, just to remind you of the little things that still make Android better than iOS. Get yours today at Carbonite.com! (http://bit.ly/carbtpn) Big News The Google v Microsoft Drama This thing has been beat to death this week. We’ve been covering the patent problem lately a lot, so let me just quickly summarize and then try to key you in on what’s to come. Google was out-bid by a consortium of tech companies for a group of patents being sold from the now defunct Novell. The consortium that out-bid them was formed by Apple, Microsoft, RIM, and Sony, with some others. Google needed/wanted these patents to use as a “mutually assured destruction” threat to help protect Android from IP lawsuits from other competing firms. There was a lot of great drama with week going back and forth between Google and Microsoft on the politics of this thing. It boils down to Google admitting they wanted these patents for lawsuit defense. They don’t like playing the game like this, but this is how they’re being forced to play to remain competitive. Now the government will be investigating whether buying these patents to essentially form an IP cartel is illegal or not. Another consortium led by Apple and Microsoft bought patents by Nortel as well. But Google is attacking the problem from several different angles. They closed a deal buying a huge block of patents from IBM and you can bet they are trolling for other opportunities as well. The short of it is that Google is finally taking the patent threat against Android seriously. Fragmentation is so 2010. The new “Android is dead” meme is Patent lawsuits. The next big thing is the InterDigital patent portfolio coming up for bid. This one looks like it might be a free-for-all with all companies competing for the patents instead of forming a consortium. Here’s a great TechCrunch video exploring the whole thing if you want to dive in more. link (http://techcrunch.com/2011/08/06/omg-jk-patents/) Quick News We have a map of the Android/iOS civil war in the United States source (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2390580,00.asp) The first real remixed HoneyComb UI has come out. It’s from Samsung called TouchWiz UX. source (http://www.slashgear.com/samsung-touchwiz-ux-review-with-galaxy-tab-10-1-05169937/) Android is the least open source of all open mobile platforms source (http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2011/08/android-least-open-platform/) Sure Android is open source, but it is developed in secret and the full code is only released when Google is good and ready to release it. They comply and release GPL code right away, but there isn’t really a legal requirement to release the rest of the Android code, everybody just thought they would just not be evil and release the code. HoneyComb changed all that. New Android tether control app for Canon DSLR cameras Install Link (https://market.android.com/details?id=eu.chainfire.dslrcontroller) Only works with HoneyComb tablets Use a USB cable to connect your tablet to your camera * touch focus * histogram * bulb capture * and many more camera options | 8/10/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Customer Reviews
Good content, problems since iOS4
Have enjoyed the content, but it will not play on my 2G iPod Touch since upgrading to iOS4. Spent a couple of hours with Applecare tech support, restored the Touch, and no success. They suspect the 128k encoding. Has happened with Episodes 22, 23, 24, 25. I have not re-downloaded earlier episodes to test.
Boring
How does anyone listen to this? These guys are way to monotone and in all three shows that I tried to watch, they could barely get their stuff to work. It was painful to watch. There was one funny part though, watching these out of shape guys reveiw a fitness app. LOL
:)
