CleanFebruary 9th The Bible Geek Podcast | Luke says "crowds" came to hear John the Baptist, while Matthew makes his hearers the scribes & Pharisees? Was it a crowd of Pharisees? Who were the Pharisees? How did they differ from the scribes/teachers and the elders? What is the fatal flaw you see in the fine-tuning argument? What is the Sitz-im-Leben of the Epistle of Barnabas? How to account for the different portrayals of Judas' betrayal in the various gospels? After the destruction of the Temple by the Romans, the Rabbis dealt with the issue of offering sacrifices in the absence of the temple, the only lawful place to offer them. Hadn't this issue perforce already come up after the destruction in 586 BCE? Is it possible that the OT says nothing about premarital sex because sex automatically meant marriage? | 2/9/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

How is the Kabbalistic "Lore of Creation" derived from Ezekiel 1:4-11 and Daniel 7:13 and 8:16-18? Does the Markan baptism story teach the trinity? What do you make of the Campbellite approach to scripture and specifically baptismal regeneration? | 2/6/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanJanuary 30th The Bible Geek Podcast | Is Brandon's "Zealot Jesus" hypothesis still taken seriously? Is the Lukan acclamation, also in Marcion's version, "God has visited his people!" inconsistent with Marcionism, implying credit given to the Jewish deity? Is the empty tomb story based on several independent traditions, a la Gary Habermas? How could Mark 13 refer to the Bar Kochba revolt instead of the fall of Jerusalem in 70? Does Mark 16:15 imply the salvation of animals? Does Genesis 1 possibly envision anything on so large a scale as the Big Bang? How can we tell how widely disseminated various gospel texts were in early Christianity? Were some that were eventually left out of the canon attested earlier than canonical ones? Are there any jokes in the Bible? Does the reference to Paul, Aquila and Priscilla as "tentmakers" signify, by a pun, their role as builders of "tabernacles," i.e., Christian communities in place of a now-superfluous temple made with hands? | 1/30/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanJanuary 28th The Bible Geek Podcast | What sort of book did Mark think he was writing? Are Mike Licona and Bart Ehrman perhaps beginning to move away from their heavy reliance on the fallacious appeal to consensus? Might we understand the scene in John 20 where Mary Magdalene suddenly recognizes Jesus as whom she had assumed to be the gardener as a parallel to the Eden story where Adam is with Eve, eats the fruit, and their eyes are opened? Might this resurrection story be based on the "2nd Adam" motif familiar from 1 Corinthians? Did Hillel and Shammai exist? If James says it is a sin not to do something good that you could do, why isn't God sinning by not forgiving everyone without condition? Nothing's stopping him. CleanJanuary 25th The Bible Geek Podcast | When 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 says Jesus died and rose "according to the scriptures" does this mean these events, which we already know about, are seen to have fulfilled OT predictions? Or that we only "know" they happened because we get the clues from OT passages? Did Paul really write the pro-Roman accommodationist stuff in Romans 13? If you reject Q in favor of the notion that Luke got all the stuff he holds in common with Matthew FROM Matthew, don't you still have to ask where Matthew got it? Is The Book of Mormon a parody of the Bible? Does Philo's "On the Changing of Names" strengthen your case that the throne-name accorded the triumphant savior was "Jesus" and not the title "Lord"? How many Bible scholars are atheists? Does the Bible condemn suicide, and did Jesus commit suicide? Is Timothy Beal making virtue of necessity when he says the self-contradictory Bible is intended to canonize the search for truth, not the possession of it? Is Nietzsche the only philosopher to take God's death seriously? | 1/25/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanJanuary 23rd The Bible Geek Podcast | Are the materials unique to John like "deleted scenes" from the Synoptics? Isaiah speaks of a voice crying, ordering that a path be cleared in the wilderness for God to walk, but Mark supposedly changes it to make the voice, not the path, to be located in the wilderness, referring to John the Baptist. But is there any difference between Mark's Greek wording and that of Isaiah in the Septuagint that Mark quotes? Aren't the arms of the figure in the Turin Shroud too long and strategically placed to represent an actual human body? If Pharisees, rabbis, and Synagogues existed in Galilee only after 70 CE, might this imply that Jesus was a figure from the late first century? If a historical Jesus was created as an anchor for credentialing the catholic bishops, why would the evangelists leave clues suggesting they were writing fiction? Wouldn't that run counter to their own agenda? Is it possible that the Byzantine Empress Irene's involvement in the Iconoclasm controversy was fictional, to defer blame from the emperor? What's wrong with the New International Version? How different would Christianity be had the Gnostics dominated? Are there signs Mark represents an abridgement of an earlier gospel? My favorite Podcast
Dr. Price brings his encyclopedic knowledge and easy-going style to a number of issues often overlooked simply because we don't appreciate how much more information is available to us. Even if you think you are reasonably well-versed in the area of Biblical studies, well, be prepared for a thought-provoking surprise or two. Short on "woo" and long on "wow".
Great podcast
My husband and I never tire of listening to the Geek. he's always entertaining and seems to have a plausible answer for every question
Setting the Standard for Biblical Scholarship
I can think of no scholar working in the fiel of New Testiment studies who combines the erudition, honesty, fearlessness and generosity of Dr. Robert M. Price. That the editor/translator of the magisterial Pre-Nicene New Testiment spend his time doing a podcast for laypeople is an incredible gift. How precious it is to have a supremely talented and knowledgable Biblical authority who is at the same time unbeholden to the conservative forces that hold the purse at seminaries and universities!
