Finding the culture in pop culture!

Customer Reviews

Geek Friendship and Shared Enthusiasm as a Spectator Sport

The subject of this podcast is pop culture with a geek slant, but the real strength of the show is the rapport between the group of friends -- a trio of schoolteachers (John, Judy, and Andrea), an IT specialist (Orenthal), a novelist and comic book writer (Keith R.A. DeCandido), a film critic (Dan Persons), and a comic book reviewer (David Alexander McDonald) -- who produce the program. They've been doing this since the cable access television incarnation of this show in the '90s, and as a listener we get to enjoy the warm conversation and good-natured sniping between longtime friends talking about what they love. The weekly episodes rotate between different formats: "In Review," "PMAP (Post Mortem After Party)," "Spotlight," and "Roundtable." Given the interaction between the hosts of the program is my favorite aspect of the show, I would recommend starting with an "In Review" episode, in which everybody in the group takes turns reviewing a pop culture product of their choice, with casual group chat in-between the reviews. (The "PMAP" episodes are freeform chat -- basically the "In Review" format without the reviews -- save these for after you've gotten a better feel for the show.) The other episode formats, "Spotlight" and "Roundtable" -- in which people from outside the show (authors, artists, journalists, actors, teachers, etc.) are either interviewed or participate in group discussions centered around a cultural topic -- can be equally fun, but given that the emphasis is off of the interaction between the hosts, my enjoyment varies depending on whether or not I'm interested in the subject of the interview or roundtable discussion. But the Chronic Rift crew put out an episode out every week (for going on three years now), so there's always something of interest around the corner. Check it out!

Good listening even if you aren't a pop culture geek

If you aren't huge into Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Television this may seem like a not-so-fun podcast. That actually isn't true. I started listening to this podcast because I'm friends with one of the Rifters (that is the proper term isn't it?) and I started with the Match Game episode. I recommend if you're unsure about this podcast, start with either of the Match Game episodes. They are both hilarious. I'm a person who doesn't like Star Wars or Star Trek (*waits for people to stop gasping in shock*) and I don't watch Television. I catch movies every now and again and I'm not a comic reader, but I still love this podcast. They are fun folks and they are very passionate about the things they like. They also review other podcasts, talk about random pop culture thoughts, review books and occasionally video games, and sometimes even talk about audio drama. (Which is the biggest reason why I like this podcast. I would have never heard of Decoder Ring Theater or Pendant Audio if not for this podcast.)

So give it a try. It's fun, even if you're not a pop culture fiend...(*winks*)

I love it!

I would though, it's my podcast. Take a moment and sample the episodes. We cover a wide variety of pop culture elements with a serious eye and a funny bone too. This is not for the insular fan, but rather for people who want to discover what the world has to offer. Please enjoy.
