Clean#88: Stage Actor Max Wojtanowicz on Pretending for a Living | How would you like to "pretend" for a living? My guest this week, Max Wojtanowicz, does just that! It's tongue-in-cheek, but in a way it makes a lot of sense. As a stage actor, Wojtanowicz takes on various roles and for a brief moment becomes that individual. Most recently, Max played the role of Tin Man in the Children's Theatre Company's production of 'Wizard of Oz.' We caught up with him just before a rehearsal for his latest project - the role of Christopher Wren in Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap - a production put on by Shadow Play Theatre. Enjoy the conversation! About Max Wojtanowicz Max Wojtanowicz is originally from the small town of Rice, Minnesota. Some of his first theater work took place in his best friend's basement where he played Captain Hook and ran the fly rail. A couple of years later he played a lost boy in a real theater, and he was never the same. He graduated from St. Olaf College in 2006 with a degree in theater and a concentration in media studies. Since graduating, Max has been thrilled to work with several theaters throughout the Twin Cities and around Minnesota. Max spent two seasons as a performing apprentice at the Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis, the largest theater for children and families in North America and the only theater for young people to win the Regional Theatre Tony Award. Credits at CTC include their recent best-selling production of The Wizard of Oz as well as Dr. Seuss' The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins, Mr. McGee and the Biting Flea, Cinderella, Ramona Quimby, Romeo & Juliet (2009 Ivey Award winner), The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, Madeline and the Gypsies, The Magic Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle, Bud Not Buddy and Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day. He also understudied productions of Average Family, A Year with Frog and Toad, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, and both characters in the world premiere of Bert and Ernie, Goodnight! Clean#85: Rob Sheppard, Builder of Handcrafted Vintage Wooden Boats | I first got word of Minncraft Boats thanks to my friend Ryan Ott and his IamMNnice.com project. I couldn't help but find Rob Sheppard's story fascinating. After all, he left what was a successful business and, in the midst of our country's worse economic times, started a new business. Not just any business - a business that builds handcrafted, vintage, wooden boats! With just two weeks before the delivery of his first boat - The Lexington - Rob and his partner Jeannette Jones were kind enough to join me in conversation! Enjoy! About Rob Sheppard and Minncraft Rob Sheppard is a jack-of-all trades who's carving out a niche in the boat-building business. He's been working with his hands for as long as he can remember. Before creating Minncraft, a company that hand-builds vintage-style wooden boats in the tradition of 1930s and ‘40s classics, Rob worked in roofing and siding and formerly owned a custom cabinetry business (Centennial Woodcraft in White Bear Lake). Minncraft Boats is a builder of handcrafted custom wooden boats using modern techniques and materials. With 26 years experience in the woodworking and boat building industry, we produce “new” classic wooden boats that are easy to maintain, yet have the beauty and quality of the original classics. Each boat is hand-built one at a time allowing complete customization. The Lexington - the first boat built by Rob - will be featured at the Minneapolis Boat Show from January 19-22, 2012. Clean#81: Dick Burgart, a Reflection on his Peace Corps Experience | The Peace Corps traces its roots and mission to 1960, when then Senator John F. Kennedy challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country in the cause of peace by living and working in developing countries. From that inspiration grew an agency of the federal government devoted to world peace and friendship. Since that time, 200,000+ Peace Corps Volunteers have served in 139 host countries to work on issues ranging from AIDS education to information technology and environmental preservation. In 1968, my in-laws, Dick and Suzanne Burgart, joined Peace Corps 13 and made their way to Ethiopia. For two-years, they gave of their life, their time and their skills to the people of Ethiopia. For this final episode of 2011, I chose to be in conversation with Dick Burgart. I've been a part of the Burgart family for more that 16 years and this episode marks the first time I've had an in-depth conversation with him about his (and my mother-in-law's) time in Ethiopia. Clean#80: Contemporary Christian Recording Artist Jason Gray | I was delighted when Jason Gray's publicist responded with a "yes" to my request for an interview. I knew that Jason was on tour and that finding time for a 30 minutes conversation would be a challenge but together they made it happen! Deep in the heart of Texas is where I caught up with Jason and my time with him was great! I am grateful for the time he took - on a "performance day" to speak with me. I hope you enjoy the conversation - his message his powerful! If you are not familiar with Jason and his music, I encourage you to check him out on iTunes today!!! About Jason Gray Jason Gray is a contemporary Christian singer-songwriter born and raised in Minnesota who now lives near the Twin Cities area. He spent six years in youth ministry, before going into full-time music ministry in 1999 as an independent artist. Jason has a speech handicap, and as a stutterer, his work emphasizes finding strength in weakness. Jason was honored as one of Ten Outstanding Young Minnesotans in 2003 by the Minnesota Junior Chamber for his volunteerism, civic leadership, and humanitarian work with World Vision's Hope Initiative, which addresses the needs of children orphaned by AIDS in Africa and other third-world countries. His passion for understanding service to the poor as a form of worship is expressed in his song "Fade With Our Voices" from his 2009 release Everything Sad Is Coming Untrue. While his work has garnered gushing critical accolades, it wasn't primarily the literate craftsmanship of his songs that drew the immediate respect of his peers and a solid fanbase to him. It was, rather, Jason's candor, his transparency, his willingness to expose his own weaknesses night after night that created an inexplicable bond with audiences and prompted Centricity Music to sign him in 2006. When a guy who grew up as a chronic stutterer in an abusive home takes the mic and obviously cares more about loving you than about what you think of him, you know something's up. Gray's discography over his career is a logical progression from his earlier indie efforts to his recent ambitious outings that find him skillfully marrying his trademark deft lyrical expressions to smooth pop melodies and a disarming passion in a way that places him somehow simultaneously in multiple camps, instantly begging comparisons to a Brandon Heath on the one hand, and a Mark Heard or a Rich Mullins on the other. For his part, Jason is content to leave the genre-parsing to others, in favor of his more pressing agendas. Clean#79: Art Therapist Katie Kinzer | My "regular job" provides me with an incredible opportunity to meet and be in conversation with some incredible individuals. It is through my work at the CentraCare Health Foundation & Coborn Cancer Center that I met our guest Katie Kinzer. The work she does with cancer survivors is amazing and very inspiring. Enjoy the conversation! About Katie Kinzer Katie Kinzer's passion for two seemingly different subjects led her on a rather unusual journey. In wedding her love for art with her interest in psychology, Katie fulfilled her life's dream of becoming an art therapist. Since receiving her B.A. in psychology and studio art from Concordia College, Moorhead, and her M.A. in art therapy from the University of Wisconsin, Superior, Katie has gained extensive experience in art therapy work. Katie offers art therapy at the Coborn Cancer Center (St. Cloud, MN) as a part of the Survivorship Network Program. In working with adults, adolescents and children alike, Katie has become especially knowledgeable in implementing art as a tool to help clients move through trauma. One of her special talents is her ability to foster the healing process through providing a warm and non-threatening atmosphere, which allows clients to feel safe and contained. Clients of all ages have come to find comfort and place a deep trust in Katie's capacity to hold them through their journeys of inner healing. Clean#72: Books For Africa Founder Thomas Warth | One of the great things about hosting this podcast is the fact that I have had the privilege and honor of being in conversation with some amazing people. This week is no different! Our guest, Tom Warth, is the founder of Books For Africa, a not-for-profit organization that has shipped more than 25 million books to Africa. He is also a great philanthropist and someone who is passionate about giving back to human kind. Enjoy the conversation. About Tom Warth & Books For Africa Tom Warth came to the United States from Great Britain in 1960. In 1966, he started a book selling business. After more than 20 years, Tom sold the business to the San Francisco Chronicle in 1988. He took some time to travel the world. He left on an adventure and returned with a mission! Books For Africa was founded that same year (1988) as a nonprofit (501.c.3) organization by Tom. It became his dream to ship donated books to the children of Africa. Tom’s visit to a Ugandan library, where books were almost nonexistent, inspired him to create a system for collecting discarded books from American schools, libraries, and publishers to send to Africa. The mission of Books For Africa is to end the book famine in Africa. With your help, we will help create a culture of literacy and provide the tools of empowerment to the next generation of parents, teachers, and leaders in Africa. Books donated by publishers, schools, libraries, individuals, and organizations are sorted and packed by volunteers who carefully choose books that are age and subject appropriate. We send good books, enough books for a whole class to use. They are shipped in sea containers paid for by contributions from people like you. It costs about 50 cents to send a book from the United States to Africa. Since 1988, Books For Africa has shipped more than 24 million books to 46 African countries. They are on once-empty library shelves, in classrooms in rural schools, and in the hands of children who have never before held a book. You can learn more about Books For Africa by visiting them online at www.booksforafrica.org or on Facebook! Images courtesy of Book For Africa. Clean#69: Facebook Changes with Jackie Kaufenberg & Lanae Paaverud | With more than 800 million users (as of July 2011), Facebook is part of the fabric of our lives. It's a way for us to connect with friends, communicate with customers and share our personal story via daily (sometimes more frequently then that!) updates and a great way for people to share pictures. Facebook is also big business! Each day they collect data and information on the likes and dislikes of their users. Just recently, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced some major changes to the way Facebook work and how we interact with it. We thought we'd take this week's episode to discuss the latest changes with two Minnesota based social media experts. PS - Join the conversation on Facebook by "liking" our fan page! About Our Guests Jackie Kaufenberg (a.k.a. @jkaufenberg) is a marketer from rural Minnesota and loves writing, social media, and everything web (working with Vivid Image Inc). My most important job is as mom to my 3 young kids. Being present, living each day to the fullest, and having fun along the way... With the help of lots of coffee, yoga, wine and friends. Kaufenberg believes that social media has changed how people are doing business. Marketing is no longer a one-way conversation. The beauty of social media marketing is how it lets people engage with brands, and then share their passion for the brand with others online. You can follow Jackie online on Twitter and at Vivid Image, Inc. Lanae Paaverud (a.k.a @socialnetnanny) is an online retailer, with 11 years of experience in many Internet aspects. In running her own website, she quickly learned that Social Networking is an integral part of any business. You can advertise your product, but you also need to put a face to your site…a human aspect. Paaverud believes that "If people don’t feel comfortable with who you are, or the product you represent, they won’t buy from you." If the ultimate goal in life is doing what you love, Lanae is doing exactly that - Social Networking! Clean#68: Ryan Ott and IamMNnice.com | Entrepreneurs are inspiring people. Our guest this week is both an entrepreneur and an inspiring individual. Ryan Ott, founder of IamMNnice.com, got the idea for his project in 2003 during a visit to New York City. To date he's captured more than 60 videos that "share the best of Minnesota", the place we both call home. Enjoy! About Ryan Ott and I Am MN Nice One of the reasons Ryan Ott started “I am MN nice” is to give Main Street Minnesota a voice. He believes the local musicians, hometown events and small business owners should have a fair shot at getting their message out there, without having to spend a ton of money to do so. Over the last year he's been traveling the metro areas, small towns, and back roads of Minnesota to find unique and interesting things to share. Since the beginning, his focus has been on making videos of the great things in his home state of Minnesota. Our guest, T.J. Mannix has lived in New York City for more than 15 years and on the morning of 9/11/2001 - like all of us were - was shocked to see what was happening in his back yard. I'll let him share the rest of the story with you ... About T.J.Mannix T.J. Mannix is an actor, singer, comedian, and voiceover artist in NYC. He was born in Massapequa, Long Island and raised in Boca Raton, Florida. T.J. studied broadcast journalism at the University of Miami, Florida, and went on to live in 13 countries and 46 states. Clean#66: Econ 101 with Thad Johnson, MBA | Economics is not one of my strengths ... actually it's a subject that completely passes me by. In fact, in the fall of 1989, during my first year of college at the University of Ottawa, I dropped my Economics 101 class after just two hours. In the past month alone, the stock market has taken all of us on a roller coaster ride. At The Conversation Hub we believe that through conversation, knowledge is shared. So this week, I've enlisted the help of a good friend to walk us through the basics in an episode we're simply calling "Econ 101." About Thad Johnson Thad Johnson, MBA, CMA, CFM, CIA is a financial advisor and principal of Flagship Capital Advisors. His mission as a financial advisor is simple, "To inspire his clients to pursue their dreams and goals by proactively providing financial solutions through education, communication and service that exceeds their expectations." He was kind enough - in the midst of a crazy time - to help us navigate through some of the mechanics of our economic system. Clean(RERUN) #40: Dick Gordon, Host of WUNC’s The Story | ::: The following episode was originally posted on February 21, 2011 ::: During my college years and my time living outside of Toronto, I was an avid listener of the Canadian Broadcast Corporation - Radio One's service. One of my favorite reporter and fill-in host was Dick Gordon. When I moved to Minnesota in 2000, I quickly became a fan of Minnesota Public Radio/National Public Radio. In September of 2001, a few days after 9/11 a familiar voice came on the air … Dick Gordon was now the host of a WBUR show called The Connection. As the host of The Story with Dick Gordon, he's been the source of many "driveway moments" for me. His interview style is second to none. It was an honor and a privilege to engage him in conversation … and now, to share it with you. As a side note … hopefully you can't tell, but I was really nervous for this one! Enjoy it! About Dick Gordon & The Story Dick Gordon was a foreign correspondent and regular fill-in host for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's national radio program, This Morning. He was also a Parliamentary reporter, and correspondent in Moscow and South Asia. Before coming to The Story, Dick was host of The Connection. The Story has many 'parents'. They are the listeners to North Carolina Public Radio-WUNC, who seized the opportunity to help make this program happen. Our listeners knew Dick Gordon from The Connection out of WBUR in Boston, a program he'd been hosting since 2001. But when the station canceled production of the show in 2005, many listeners were upset -- especially here in the Triangle. Many of them called or sent e-mail messages to the Chapel Hill station urging WUNC to bring Dick Gordon to North Carolina and to continue the program from here. We had such a great time! The food, the conversation and the BEER was great. Clean#59: Coffee4Good with John Oren | Some projects are worth talking about. Some people are worth talking with. Our guest this week, John Oren, is the idea guy being this great project called Coffee4Good.org. Right from the beginning of our conversation I felt a deep connection with John and found myself wishing I lived closer to him so we could share a conversation over a great cup of coffee! Through conversation, life happens and finds meaning. I found this to be a meaningful conversation for me. Enjoy! About John Oren and Coffee4Good.org Born in Marshall, Michigan, John H. Oren has been full of ideas ever since childhood. With a yearning to learn more about the world, John graduated from James Madison College at Michigan State University. He lived overseas in Sao Paulo Brazil, learning Portuguese on the streets and worked for Kellogg Do Brasil. A few years later, faced with a decision between government service or international sales, John chose the latter. An international salesman most of his career, John naturally builds relationships, continuously reads and relishes life-long learning. Utilizing his key strengths as a maximizer and ideator, today he would call himself a serial entrepreneur. John and his wife have always desired to do more with their lives to bless and help others. In May 2009, this desire, named after the Oren children, became Joshua’s Grace Corporation. Furthermore, the name signifies their relationship with Yeshua and the grace shown to mankind. Sitting in Moscow one day, wishing he could meet a friend for coffee, John pondered an idea. Wouldn't it be great to send a virtual coffee to his friend. Even better, take the cost of the coffee and donate to a charity in honor of them. Coffee4good.org became a reality in 2010. Clean(RERUN) Episode 32: Naked Bicycles and Design’s Sam Whittingham | We’re taking a break this week in advance of the holiday weekend in both Canada and the USA. We’ll be back next week (Tuesday, July 5th) with a new episode and more great conversations. Happy Canada Day and Independence Day! ::: The following episode was originally posted on December 28, 2010 ::: About Sam Whittingham & Naked Bicycles Sam Whittingham, founder, designer and builder for custom bicycle fabrication company, Naked Bicycles and Design, has been building custom frames one by one with love, logic and elbow grease for over a decade now. “I have a definite style which I cannot help but bring to each and every bicycle, but I am greatly influenced by the needs and desires of each customer.” Bike making is in our blood. You could say this company really started 30 years ago as Sam ripped apart his first coaster hub to make it “skid better”. Or maybe it was when he duct-taped a broom stick to his “girls bike” to make it a “boys bike”. Sam worked in bike shops and learned to weld, draft, machine and paint long before he put together his first frame. Sam spent years racing and perfecting bike fit and riding analysis for various disciplines. This is definitely one of the things that sets naked bikes apart; Making each bike fit just right. The first Naked frame was built for Sam’s good friend Neil Carson nearly 12 years ago. And that bike is still being ridden daily. These first few bikes were made late at night in the dungeon of Fairfield Bicycle Shop in Victoria, BC. Later, we moved into a little garage in Victoria and started building bikes under the name of Forte! This lasted for a number of years before we realized that things were really taking off and we needed more space. After a brief stint on Gabriola Island, we have now settled permanently on Quadra Island. This was a return to my home town and we changed the name one last time to naked. The name reflects our desire to build bikes un-adulterated by hype and the latest fads. All images courtesy of Sam Whittingham and Naked Bicycles and Design. © All rights reserved. Clean#55: Holocaust Survivor Aaron Elster | During my travels in Up With People, I had the opportunity to visit two concentration camps in Germany: Auschwitz and Buchenwald. What I remember the most fro these visits are the images and stories on display and how incredibly sick to my stomach I felt about just a few minutes in these camp. A month ago, I had the opportunity to hear a first person account of this tragic and horrific time in our world's history. Aaron Elster, a child survivor of the Holocaust, came to my hometown and share his story. Joined by my wife, three children and more than 300 other people, we sat in silence as Aaron told his story about how he escaped the liquidation of the Sokolow Ghetto. It is a pleasure to have him as our guest this week. I am grateful for his time and generosity. About Aaron Elster Aaron Elster is a child survivor of the Holocaust. He was born in 1933 in the small northeastern village of Sokolow, Podlaski in Poland. Aaron lived in the Sokolow Ghetto with his two sisters, mother and father until the liquidation of the ghetto in September, 1942. He escaped the liquidation and hid in the surrounding forests and farms. Eventually, Aaron found refuge in the attic of a Polish family, where he hid for two years until the war's end. After the war, he lived in several orphanages throughout Poland, and eventually was smuggled out of Poland to various DP camps in West Germany. He and his sister Irene came to the United States in June 1947. He was educated in Chicago and served in the armed forces in Korea. Aaron has been married to his wife Jackie for more than 55 years. They have two sons, Steven and Robert, and three grandchildren, Sarah, Allison and Jacob. After retiring from MetLife, he became an active member of the community, serving as co-chairman of the Speakers Bureau and Vice President of the Executive Board at the Holocaust Memorial Foundation of Illinois. His presentations touch adults and children alike, and his open and loving style creates extensive discussions and interactive exploration of the Holocaust and its issues. Within his presentation, Aaron challenges young people to explore their strengths and encourages them to be the master of their destiny, realizing that they have the power to change their world. Clean#49: Documentary Filmmaker Benjamin Fingerhut | Benjamin Fingerhut, director and producer of the documentary Breaking and Entering, is our guest this week and I must confess, this episode will certainly make my top 10 list for the year. As is often the case with all of our episodes, the time passes to quickly and I find myself having to wrap up a conversation that could have gone on for hours. I received a preview of his documentary a few weeks back and was glued to the screen by the stories Benjamin captured in his film. I know you'll enjoy eavesdropping on our conversation. Note: Benjamin is all about getting the story and managed to turn the tables on me - for one brief moment, he became the interviewer! Enjoy! Follow a joggler, a grape catcher, and a man who cycles nowhere as they battle the odds – and their respective nemeses – in pursuit of global dominance. Since when is it trivial to dream?
