In this message I address some crucial questions about how God transforms us from the inside out: Are we fundamentally deprived or fundamentally depraved? If as Christians we are "under grace," what motivates true obedience in our lives? What does Paul mean when he says we have "died to sin," and how do we experience this freedom? Albert Mohler Speaks on the Danger of Too Much Digital Technology | Covenant Eyes Radio - Episode 93 The Internet and digital media are full of advantages, but there is often a price we pay when we don't have the discipline to unplug. Teens will often spend more than 30 hours a week online, and nearly one-third of teens say being unplugged from technology actually makes them feel more stressed. Is there such a thing as too much digital technology? And what is more time online really costing us? Helping us understand this issue is my special guest, Dr. Albert Mohler, President of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Dr. Mohler was recognized by Time.com as the “reigning intellectual of the evangelical movement in the U.S.” and is the author of many books on Christianity and culture. Pure Justice: Connecting Pornography to Sex Trafficking | Covenant Eyes Radio - Episode 80 "A true pursuit of justice necessarily starts with a pursuit of personal purity" - Noel Bouché Today I am interviewing Noel Bouché, Vice President of pureHOPE (formerly known as the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families). Noel oversees the development of educational materials, campaigns, and partnerships to promote justice for the victims of sex trafficking. Noel also runs the pureJUSTICE summer internship program, an initiative aimed at properly connecting the exploitation that is pornography to the evil of sex trafficking, a form of modern-day slavery. Today Noel will talk about why this internship was created and how the interns are furthering the cause of promoting justice and purity in a pornified culture. Noel is the author of Exploited: Sex Trafficking, Porn Culture, and the Call to a Lifestyle of Justice (pdf). In this booklet Noel lays out the connection between the pornography industry and sex trafficking. This booklet demonstrates not only that pornography drives demand for sex trafficking, but that it actually constitutes a form of sex trafficking deserving of opposition and condemnation. Exploited also calls for the church to live out a lifestyle of justice according to Scripture. Music for today's podcast is "Fragile" by Ten Shekel Shirt. Protest Outside a Porn Shop Lasts Five Years | Covenant Eyes Radio - Episode 77 On July 21, 2005, a group of concerned citizens in Uniontown, Indiana, started a round-the-clock protest against a newly opened adult superstore, the Lion's Den. Rain or shine, the protesters have been there along I-65, 24 hours a day for the last five years. They are known as the Uniontown Watchdogs. Protesters dissuade truckers and other travelers from entering the Lion's Den with signs that say whoever enters this store, that person's picture will be taken and posted on the protesters' website, War-Line.org. Truckers also have photos taken of their license plates sent to their employers. Today we get to hear from the protesters themselves to hear about their experiences: Jon Pearce, pastor of First Baptist Church of Crothersville, and Rob Patterson, the one who posts photos on War-Line.org. What do you think? In an anonymous survey on our blog: 43.3% said, "I believe the Watchdogs have a right to protest, but their methods are harmful to their Christian message." 56.7% said, "I believe the Watchdogs have a right to protest the way they are doing it, and I think their methods are an effective way to promote their anti-porn message." Soul Talk: Taking Accountability to the Next Level (Recap) | Thanks to Dr. Larry Crabb for his recent podcasts with us. In his book, SoulTalk: The Language God Longs for Us to Speak, he speaks to accountability partners about how they can deepen their conversations with one another. Do we really believe God can use the church community as a means of grace that transforms us more and more into the image of Christ? Dr. Crabb identifies five biblical ways of relating and communicating that stir us up to put off indwelling sin and put on Christlike love and good deeds. You can listen to all the parts of the interview below: Introduction to the Five Steps – Listen (11:33) Step #1: “Think Beneath” – Listen (11:00) Step #2: “Think Vision” – Listen (9:18) Step #3: “Think Passion” – Listen (7:40) Step #4: “Think Story” – Listen (7:28) Step #5: “Think Movement” – Listen (9:46) Complete Interview with Dr. Crabb – Listen (39:14) What I love about Dr. Crabb's teachings is that they are grounded in Trinitarian theology. Since eternity past, Father, Son, and Spirit have related to one another in perfect delight and love, and it is that very way of relating which God shares with His redeemed children. Dr. Crabb writes in a recent issue of Christian Counseling Today: On good authority I believe I was created to know God and His Son by His Spirit and to find life in that knowledge. Jesus made that clear in John 17:3. But I think I’m seeing a direction in our Christian culture that is taking us away from the very thing we all were created to enjoy and leading us instead toward a more easily felt counterfeit. Peter told us that all followers of Jesus “participate in the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4). My dabbling in Trinitarian theology has persuaded me that the divine nature is not a static thing like a set of attributes that define the “godness” of God, but is better thought of as a dynamic relational flow of life into others. I like putting it this way: the essential nature of God, shared equally and fully by each divine Person, is a disposition to live for the well-being of others at any cost to oneself. That’s the divine nature. Fallen human nature is another matter entirely. Ever since Eden, all of us, every human being with one notable exception, are committed to our own well-being at any cost to others. Now that’s bad news. It means we can’t enjoy communion with God any more than oil and water can smoothly co-mingle. But thanks to Jesus, thanks to His life, death and resurrection, His followers now actually and literally participate in His divine nature. I take that to mean that two radically opposing sources of energy, two incompatible motivations, compete at any given moment for control over how I relate to others. My relationships have become the front-line battlefield as I walk the narrow road to life. Either I relate, both to God and others, with the divine energy of love that sacrifices self-interest for the sake of others, or I relate with the fallen passion that hides a core commitment to my well-being at any cost to others, beneath a veneer of religious sociability. (Larry Crabb, “Experiencing God by Expressing God,” Christian Counseling Today, Vol.17, No.2) In other words, we participate in God's nature in the context of our human relationships. Our fellowship with God is enjoyed as we relate to others with the same self-sacrificing character that each Person of the Triune God manifests. "Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God" (Ephesians 5:1-2). | 4/12/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Soul Talk: Taking Accountability to the Next Level (Step #5) | Covenant Eyes Radio - Episode 57 Covenant Eyes accountability software is a powerful tool to use to be accountable to others about where we go and what we see online. But biblical accountability is more than just a willingness to talk about your struggles and sins. Being an accountability partner is more than just being willing to listen. It is also a willingness be an instrument in the Holy Spirit's hands to make someone else more like Christ. Today's podcast is the last portion of our conversation with Christian psychologist Dr. Larry Crabb. In his book, SoulTalk, Dr. Crabb talks about what he calls the five dance steps of redemptive Christian conversation. In this series of podcasts Dr. Crabb has been elaborating on these steps to equip accountability partners to deepen their relationships. This week Dr. Crabb talks about the fifth step, “Think Movement.” Fueled by the hope we have in the gospel, we think movement for one another by encouraging each other in the cycle of spiritual formation. This is a cycle of real repentance and bold faith in Christ, the cycle God uses to make us more like Christ. Soul Talk: Taking Accountability to the Next Level (Step #4) | Covenant Eyes Radio - Episode 56 The church often encourages its members to find accountability relationships in their pursuit to be more like Christ. We at Covenant Eyes also strongly believe in the power of accountability friendships, but these friendships need to be more skin deep. Over the past several weeks we've been playing portions of our conversation with Dr. Larry Crabb. Speaking from his book, SoulTalk, Dr. Crabb has been helping us understand ways that we can build deeper accountability relationships with people in the body of Christ. He has been talking with us about what he calls the five dance steps of Christian conversation, five important ways of thinking that help us to interact with our friends in a way that moves us to repent of sin and hunger more for God. This week he talks about the fourth step, “Think Story.” This step is about being curious about our accountability partner's life, curious about the significant relationships that have had the deepest impact on them. Soul Talk: Taking Accountability to the Next Level (Step #3) | Covenant Eyes Radio - Episode 55 Covenant Eyes exists to help people have open and honest accountability conversations about Internet use. This not only means developing good accountability software, but helping people to go deep in their friendships with one another. We recently contacted Christian psychologist Dr. Larry Crabb to ask him about ways in which we can foster deeper accountability relationships. Using material from his book, SoulTalk, Dr. Crabb talks with us about how we can have the kind of Christian friendships that spur us on to be more like Christ. Dr. Crabb has been talking with us about what he calls the five dance steps of redemptive Christian conversation, five important ways of thinking that help us to interact with our friends in a way that stirs our passions for God. He has already spoken about the first two steps. This week he talks about the third step, “Think Passion.” This step is about identifying the hidden motives of our own hearts as we converse with others. The more deeply aware we are about our own sinful motives, the more quickly we can repent of them and identify the godly motives the Holy Spirit is placing within us. TD and Veronica Benton speak on porn addiction | Recently our friends TD and Veronica Benton were interviewed by XXXchurch about their story of porn addiction and recovery: What is White Collar Sideshow? Doug Van Pelt of Hard Music Magazine writes of them, “[T]he tag 'band' hardly fits them. This Vaudevillian outfit is closer to dynamic art exhibit in the new old west than a rock band. Think drum street corps accompanying Andy Warhol on the plains of Kansas or outside an old Western saloon circa 1800s. Or imagine the Jim Rose Circus and Traveling Oddity Show rolling into a pioneer town to entertain and enlighten the settlers for an evening of industrial noise.” Over a year ago I learned about WCS and the meaning behind their act. It is that meaning that intrigued me the most. When I first spoke with T on the phone, his story of porn addiction gripped my heart. I'm so thankful for their ministry. Using their own style, T and Veronica have fashioned a show to tell that story and bring a message of hope to others. Soul Talk: Taking Accountability to the Next Level (Step #2) | Covenant Eyes Radio - Episode 54 Good accountability relationships are hard to find. Dr. Crabb's hope is that through these podcasts more people will recover the lost art of curiosity, and that we will learn how to engage with one another on a deeper level—one that allows us to see the work the Holy Spirit is doing in our lives. Speaking from his book SoulTalk, Dr. Crabb speaks with us about what he calls the five dance steps of redemptive Christian conversation, five important ways of thinking that help us to speak and listen to one another in a way that stirs our passion for God. Soul Talk: Taking Accountability to the Next Level (Step #1) | Covenant Eyes Radio - Episode 53 Covenant Eyes equips people to find good accountability relationships in the fight against Internet temptation. Our accountability software is a unique tool that helps people to shatter the anonymity of Internet use and be open to others about the choices we make and the temptations we face online. However, Internet accountability reports are only as good as our friendships with the people who read them. We need accountability partners who are engaged with us in a life-changing way. We are in the middle of a podcast series featuring Christian psychologist Dr. Larry Crabb. Last week Dr. Crabb spoke about the need we have for Biblical friendships and community that help us to become more like Christ. This week he will talk about the battle against sin that rages inside all of our hearts and how we are meant to "Think Beneath" the surface in our conversations with one another, getting to the root of sin and stiring up holy desire. Soul Talk: Taking Accountability to the Next Level (Introduction) | Covenant Eyes Radio - Episode 52 Covenant Eyes encourages and equips people to find accountability relationships in the fight against Internet temptation. Is Porn Your "Idol"? | For some, boiling all human problems down to “idolatry” might seem like a bit of a stretch, but I am convinced every imbalance, every injustice, and every moral problem is under-girded by a “worship disorder.” We choose to worship false gods. One of my personal idols was pornography. My attraction to it was not unlike religious devotion. To be sure, part of me hated pornography because it was so addicting and so controlling. But in reality, pornography was one of my gods. - - - - Digging Beneath the Surface How does idolatry drive something like pornography addiction? In Colossians 3:5 Paul tells his readers, “Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” In this list, Paul goes from the most overt to the least overt sexual sins. It's as if he is peeling away layers like an onion, looking for the sin underneath the sin. Paul starts with outward behavior, moves to attitudes, and finally drills down deep to the place of desire. And underneath it all is “idolatry.” Deep within us, it is idolatry that drives our cravings for evil things. John Calvin said, “The human heart is a factory of idols.” We were created as worshipers, and when the true God does not occupy the place of primacy in our hearts, we will find something or someone to take His place. It is unavoidable. - - - - How Idols Are Made For more from Mark Driscoll about how idols are made in our culture, listen to these Sermon Jams: | 11/3/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

John Piper on Why We Need Accountability Groups in the Church? | John Piper of Bethlehem Baptist Church has a vision for accountability and small groups in his congregation, and it is not a tame vision. Below is a segment from a message he preached over 20 years ago entitled, "Battling Unbelief Together." The sermon is based on Hebrews 10:24-25. In this message Piper highlights: We are commanded to meet together in smaller, face-to-face settings. We are commanded to break bad habits of avoiding that kind of face-to-face fellowship. The nearness of the coming Day of Christ should compel us to meet more often and more intensely. Our face-to-face meetings are meant to empower one another to love. We encourage one another to love by reminding each other of the great and precious promises of God. Listen to the sermon excerpt below. You can read or listen to the whole sermon at DesiringGod.org. Battling Sin at the Root (Fight Clubs Recap) | Recently we spoke with Jonathan Dodson, author of Fight Clubs: Gospel-Centered Discipleship. Read or download the book on LuLu.com. Listen to Part 1 of the interview (7:35). Listen to Part 2 of the interview (14:05). Listen to Part 3 of the interview (12:01). Download the full interview as one audio file (33:35). Fight Clubs are small, simple groups of 2 or 3 Christians who meet regularly to help one another beat the desires of the flesh and find supreme delight in God. If you struggle with lust and/or pornography temptation, how can you implement some of these ideas in your accountability relationships? Reflecting on the principles in this book, I have applied them to our fight against lust and pornography. Over time, as we fight these specific sins, we can expand our questions to include many other struggles. Here are some suggestions . . . . . . . Fight Clubs - Rule #1: Know Your Sin Stirring up lustful fantasy, looking at pornography, or engaging in cybersex are surface sins fueled by deeper sin that hides in our hearts. The following questions are designed to help you and your accountability partner(s) to peel away the layers of sin, to move from the fruit to the root. Have you glorified God and honored Christ in the quantity and quality of time spent online? Have you seen anything online recently that tempted you? Have you lingered anywhere online that encouraged you to fantasize about someone? Have you seen or interacted with anyone online or offline recently who lustfully enticed you? Have any mental images or memories emerged that lustfully enticed you? In the moment of enticement, how did you react? Did you notice it as an enticement at first? Did you justify indulging it? Did you minimize the evil in it? Do you notice any patterns in the moments you are enticed? (A pattern can be a similar time of day, similar location, similar circumstances going on in life, or similar disposition in your heart.) . . . . Fight Clubs - Rule #2: Fight Your Sin When you come together with your accountability partner(s) the goal is to slay sin at the root, to not only expose and confess the wrong (Know Your Sin) but to expose the lies we are cherishing that drive it (Fight Your Sin). We pursue the pleasures of sin because we believe the false promises sin promotes. We sin because we cherish and believe something that will not ultimately satisfy. Instead of running to our supremely satisfying God, we run to idols. "Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food" (Isaiah 55:1-2). When you come together with your accountability partner(s) begin asking the question: "When you do _____ what false promise of satisfaction do you think you are believing?" . . . . Fight Clubs - Rule #3: Trust Your Savior We conquer a desire for sin only by yielding to a greater desire for God. Sin loses its luster only as we are more enamored with the glory of Christ. Below are Scriptural promises that can help focus our attention on being deeply satisfied and joyful in all Christ is and promises to be to us now and for eternity. As accountability partners, spend time praying through and reminding one another of these promises. Psalm 37 Matthew 5:1-10 Romans 8:18-30 Ephesians 5:1-20 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11 Titus 3:3-8 Hebrews 12:14-29 1 Peter 1:3-16 2 Peter 1:3-21 1 John 3:1-3 Each time you come together with your accountability partner(s) make the text of Scripture your focus. Pray for wisdom to interpret it rightly. Make the text personal, asking yourselves: Have I actively trusted Christ for these promises? Do I desire God as He has revealed Himself in His Word? | 9/30/09 | Free | View In iTunes |
