A moderately genuine & honest church
*** I wish the files were smaller; so I could fit more on my iPod!!! ***
I go to this church infrequently (about twice a month), which is not to say it's horrible, I just don't have the courage to get out of bed every Sunday morning. They meet at the Lucky Lab Pubs in Hawthorne and NW Portland. I like the amount of discussion within each sermon. Each preacher will engage everyone attending with questions, comments, etc.; and everyone is encouraged to offer their portion on whatever subject the preacher lays out. The sermons always attempt to be relevant, down-to-earth, honest. So there's not a glut of phony pulpiteering. The sermons are always seeking to understand God more, too. God the Father, Jesus, Holy Spirit, and our role in the melee of it all. There's also a communal emphasis. A line I remember from one of the elders was "We don't want this place to be a business where we just dispense religious & spiritual services, and you walk out at the end"; they actually want everyone to find a place with other people seeking to live lives more in line with how God designed the his world. I haven't totally felt the warm embracing love from a community, but that doesn't mean that it isn't there, I might just be numb or oblivious.
But as for the sermons, you should give them a listen. Definitely start with "Why Evergreen?". There couldn't be a better primer.
