ExplicitEpisode 47 – Narrative 40k Gaming | Bringing more story to the Tabletop is the theme of Episode 47 of The Independent Characters, and to help us do so, we have brought Adan (Black Sword from the forums) and his friend Mike (a long time gamer who has just recently returned to 40k) to the show. They have both been playing through a small narrative campaign of 40k, which they have devised themselves. We talk to Mike about why he has suddenly a renewed interest in Warhammer 40k and how he introduced Adan to a different style of play. Obviously we talk about our hobby progress, or lack thereof, but the bigger news is that we announce the two winners of the Adepticon Fundraiser Raffle! Thank you for everyones support of the show and we promise to bring you the very best of Adepticon in late April! We hope you enjoy the show! ExplicitEpisode 46 – Imperial Armour 11: The Doom of Mymeara | Imperial Armour 11 has finally arrived! We take our patented Independent Characters approach to covering Forge World books. In the first portion of the program you will hear about the story told in The Doom of Mymeara, and what our thoughts are about this epic conflict. To celebrate we have also brought in our foremost expert on killing Eldar (from within their ranks!) Lars! We then take you on a tour of the units, lists, models, and missions (SO CRUNCHY!) depicted in the book. We then wrap up with our Bang for Your Buck rating system. We also launch into two different interviews (We bring back the dot-matrix printer for this one – apologies for the noise interference, it only happens when we are not in the studio and using Skype – it’s only during these interviews). One with Reece of The Bay Area Open, where we talk about what they have planned and what is going on with their store – Frontline Gaming. The second interview is with Mr. Justin of Secret Weapon Miniatures. We find out what HIS Secret Mission is and a few other interesting facts! As usual we will cover The Workbench and see how far Geoff has actually progressed towards his Hobby Progress Challenge committment. If you recall last episode, he committed to do “something”. We hope you enjoy. ExplicitEpisode 45 – 2011: The Year in Review | For our first show of 2012, we do a complete recap of everything that happened in 2011! We go over every release by Games Workshop, Forge World, Black Library and anything else that is licensed for 40k! This is always an interesting excercise as we realize just how much actually came out for our favorite hobby. Things that seemed to be a “long time ago” were actually more recent than we really remember. We also discuss our hobby progress (or lack thereof in some cases!) and talk quite a bit about the games we played over the last two weeks. With some of us on vacation we actually got quite a bit of playing in. We hope you enjoy. ExplicitEpisode 44 – The Year End Spectacular! | Episode 44 is our finale for 2011 and to put this year to bed correctly we have brought a large number of our gaming friends in for some one on one interviews and discussions about what they want to see in 2012 from Games Workshop. We recorded each of these interviews at our Holiday 40k Party. Not surprising, a number of these thoughts are related to the upcoming 6th Edition of Warhammer 40k! This all comes after we throw our two cents into the pot about what we want to see in 2012 ourselves. We have Zach actually in the studio for this discussion, so that makes the communication a bit easier as well. We have an extra long segment about games played as we have gotten in a LOT of game playing over the last two weeks. So prepare yourselves for that – but before we launch into those stories, we have a bunch of Black Library Prizes to give away! So make sure you listen to the beginning of the show for your name! Thanks for making 2011 an amazing year for The Independent Characters, we plan to continue to entertain and innovate all the way through 2012! Happy Holidays! ExplicitEpisode 43 – What army is right for you? (Xenos Edition) | After last episode, you may still need help deciding what army to play! Maybe you are a new player and trying to decide what you want to do for your first army, or even if you are the veteran of a thousand psychic wars looking for your next big project, we will discuss each and every force within the Warhammer 40k Universe. With 16 different armies in Warhammer 40k we had to break this topic up into multiple episodes. So for Episode 43 we cover all eight of the Xenos threats! Even so – this is an extremely LONG episode and for that we apologize for those of you who prefer brevity. Next episode will not be nearly as long! We are of course going to be discussing our hobby progress and games played in this episode as well. ExplicitEpisode 40 – What if we ran Games Workshop? | We all wonder from time to time just what Games Workshop is thinking when they make some of the decisions they do. In Episode 40 of The Independent Characters, we say goodbye to Dear Old Uncle Moneybags, but we thank him for leaving us 51% controlling interest in Games Workshop! Now that we have the power, what would we do with it!? We take a look at exactly how we think we would run Games Workshop if given the chance. What crazy ideas would we come up with? And would it drive the company to perform better or send it crashing and burning in flames?! Primarily focusing in the Product Lines and Marketing of the Company, what would you do differently? This is always a fun discussion to have – so we thought we would give it our best go! Make sure you take a look at our front page for our Bonus Content Forbidden Lore about Double Eagle by Dan Abnett. This includes a 30 min discussion of the book with Dan Abnett himself! ExplicitEpisode 39 – The ICs Summer Campaign | Episode 39 is all about The Independent Characters Summer Campaign that we ran with our local gaming group. We talk about the scope of the rules and the design of the campaign and then get the input from most of the players who were involved in it and what their thoughts were. Obviously, our standard Hobby Progress and Battle Reports take place – but the majority of the episode is geared towards the campaign. As a side note – We mentioned last episode that our Forbidden Lore segment on Dan Abnetts Double Eagle would take place this episode. This was a mistake on Carl’s part. The Forbidden Lore segment will actually take place in Episode 40. We hope you enjoy the show. We discuss the different ways you can play Team Games in Warhammer 40k, how these games can make for a very different experience in gaming and why you might want to consider Team Games as a regular event. Additionally, we will talk about a few great expansions for Team Games and an idea that Carl is going to end up spearheading with The IC’s Community to develop a book for Team Game use! Obviously we talk about our Hobby Progress, but a large portion of this show is dedicated to our games played. Due to a change in our recording schedule we got a large amount of games in, and Geoff talks about his victory at this years Celesticon! We also have our Forbidden Lore Segment on Gav Thorpes “Path of The Seer” – so if you haven’t read it yet you may want to skip the section after the closing music as we give out tons of spoilers! ExplicitEpisode 35 – The Benefits of 40k | You have heard all the negatives – now listen to why 40k is a great game to play! This episode is all about the benefits of 40k and why we think this is still a very positive game and has a lot of great things going for it! Zach and Carl tackle this subject with typical enthusiasm! Unfortunately, Geoff is on vacation at this time and was unable to join us for this lively and positive discussion as to why Warhammer 40k is the place to be these days! (He may have had differing opinions but that’s what happens when you go on vacation!) We of course cover our standard hobby progress and games played this time around. We go a bit into how the Hobby Progress Challenge is keeping us on track and preventing us from being distracted with other projects. We hope you enjoy Episode 35. Also – Please Note that the Forbidden Lore Segment on Atlas Infernal by Rob Sanders will be released on the 24th as a separate download. Again we apologize for the delay of this segment. ExplicitEpisode 32 – Using Forge World Rules for 40k Games | Episode 32 covers how to integrate Forge World Rules into your regular 40k games. We discuss the common complaints about the use of these rules, whether they are “Official” (from Games Workshop’s perspective), how they are best utilized, and what you can do to make them even better! If you are looking to spice up your games a little, or just try something a bit different, you might find this to be an interesting solution. We also do a quick overview and review of Imperial Amour: Apocalypse and Imperial Armour: Apocalypse 2. Though primarily pushed as Apocalypse resources, these two books consolidate many of the units within previous Imperial Armour books into one place and in some cases, update them significantly! Additionally they offer a large number of Apocalypse formations that will add to the excitement of any Apocalypse game you might be playing! As always, we discuss our hobby progress and games played, where you will learn that apparently Carl is a big ol’ cheater pants. And last but not least, we will leave you with our Second Forbidden Lore Segment! This month we talk about Chris Wraight’s “Battle of The Fang”. Spoilers ahead! ExplicitEpisode 31 – How To Do Everything in 40k | Except actually play! This episode we take an indepth look at the “How To” series of books by Games Workshop (ie: How To Paint Citadel Miniatures, How To Paint Space Marines, How To Paint Citadel Tanks, and How To Build Wargame Terrain) and discuss what the purpose of each book is and how well does it achieve its goal. We also take a look at Imperial Armour: Model Masterclass Vol 1. An advanced modelling and painting book put out by Forge World. This book points you in the direction of taking your vehicle and terrain painting skills to “the final level” as Geoff puts it! ExplicitEpisode 28 – Spearhead | This episode we cover the free Games Workshop 40k Expansion – Spearhead! Released in White Dwarf in March of 2010, and then online for free, Spearhead was considered by many to be a failure of an expansion on the part of Games-Workshop. We playtest Spearhead and give you our thoughts on this often overlooked and underestimated expansion for Warhammer 40k! Like us – you might just be surprised at what we found. You can now download the Spearhead expansion for free from the Games Workshop website and they even expanded on it a little bit since the release. We also cover our hobby progress and games played as well as have some insight into two new books by The Black Library: Age of Darkness and Fall of Damnos! Don’t forget about our new segment starting next episode (Episode 29) entitled: Forbidden Lore. ExplicitEpisode 27 – The True Costs of 40k | In additon to our regular hobby progress and games played segments, this episode we discuss the “Hidden Costs” of Warhammer 40k. The costs in money for extra things you may not consider, and as silly as it may sound here, the physical and emotional costs surrounding our favorite hobby. What does it really cost you in time, energy, money, emotional and physical well being? What you think it costs you might just be the tip of the proverbial iceberg! We also discuss the final round of Adepticon and give some of our tactical feedback and analysis. Completing our coverage of Adepticon 2011 and bringing us full circle to where we started it, we wrap it all up with an interview with Matt Weeks. Additionally, we briefly speak about three other offerings from The Black Library and Games Workshop. This episode comes in a little longer than we typically like to do – but we had a lot of time sensitive information that we really wanted to share with everyone before it was too late! ExplicitEpisode 15 – We Brake for Difficult Terrain | Jason, one of our regular players, and admitted addict to list adjustments, joins us in The Boiler Room Studio for a discussion on how to approach building lists for 40k. We talk about initial list concepts, how to think about using a list you build, and tools and techniques that help us develop lists. We continue to update our coverage of our campaign, and for the first time ever, the fates have allowed two players in the same game to be in the studio at once! So you get perhaps a too deep look at how one of our games actually played out. We recently cleaned The Boiler Room recording studio out. In the process of this we stored all of our gaming boards in the next room. Interestingly enough, it turns out those same game boards were absorbing some of the echo in the game room. From their web site: http://www.dagrandwaaaghgt.com/ The battle will take place on the U.S.S. Hornet Museum in Alameda. The Aircraft Carrier USS HORNET Museum is a national treasure, having participated in two of the greatest events of the 20th century — World War II and the Apollo 11 manned space mission. Two fighter planes will block off our gaming tables. Not only are playing on a WW2 aircraft carrier with lots of history, we are supporting a non-profit organization. We are proud to announce that we will be a part of the Games Workshop 2010 Tournament Circuit! Check us out on Games Workshops website at http://www.games-workshop.com. The top two players in each game system will receive an invitation to play in the Games Workshop Vegas Finals in 2011. To ensure that we rent enough table space, we need all players to pay prior to our new September 1 deadline. Please register as soon as possible to ensure your inclusion to the tournament. Any players that wish to sign up after the deadline need to contact us at Dabigboss@dagrandwaaaghgt.com first before paying to ensure we have space available. ExplicitEpisode 05 – In Soviet Russia, The Army paints you! | We are back from Kubla Con and more importantly the Golden Gargant Rogue Trader Tournament. In this episode we discuss how that tournament went, how our Episode 04 “Con Advice” played out, and why Carl ran from the Tournament Hall crying like a little girl. We also answer the question “How did Zach score in the RTT?” Lars “The Doom of The Eldar” joins us for this episode. He also participated in the Golden Gargant and we learn a little bit about what it’s like to be married to a Russian woman that paints 40k models! We ran into a slight sound problem where Carls mic came in a bit low – but I think we have corrected for that in post-production. Also, bear in mind I was editing all this shenanigans at two in the morning, so I am aware of the “sound blooper” with the one music fade out. Great podcast.
I've listened to just about all the 40k podcasts out there and was skeptical about listening to this one. The lack of Games Workshop news and hardcore army strategery so prevalent in other podcasts made me hesitant to listen.
Now I find this is the first 40k podcast I turn to. Why? Because these 1-2 hours are all about the fun of the game. I never noticed how much other podcasts whine over and over about rules or games workshop. This podcast is like a breath of fresh air. Both casters are funny and informative. Thanks for keeping the game fun guys!
Now this is a Warhammer 40K Podcast worth Listening to!
This is a great Podcast. The fact that it has great sound quality is just the tip of the iceberg.
This was the first Wargaming Podcast that I listened to and it will be the Podcast that I judge all future wargaming Podcasts by.
Excellent work gentlemen.
Great Listening
The podcast has a good cast of veteran players. They tend to know the game very well and treat their listeners as such. This is a good podcast for those that have played the game alot and can be considered veterans. Keep up the good work guys :)
