Outstanding!
As a lifelong jazz listener (and sometimes player) I can't report on how this podcast sounds to the uninitiated, but to my ears it sounds just fine. Jason has such a great diversity of guests and displays such impressive knowledge about them that after a year of listening I still couldn't say who his favorites are. I've discovered some great artists through "The Jazz Session" (Darius Jones, Cooper-Moore) and learned new things about old favorites (Sonny Rollins, Sam Rivers, Henry Threadgill).
The best part, though, is Jason's interviewing skills. He's very respectful, but not obsequious, and politely presses his guests to articulate their meanings in plain language. After reading hundreds of musicians talk about things like "incorporating [a musical style or experience] into my concept," it's really refreshing to hear someone say, "what exactly does that mean?" The other interviewing trait of Jason's I like is that he is secure enough not to worry about impressing his guest with his musical knowledge. His is focused on what his audience wants to know, and not on how hip he sounds. Trust me, this is very very rare, and something to be celebrated. Big ups!
love it!
this podcast is great because the interviews are conversational and not stuffy! it's great to hear these musicians in a relaxed setting and having fun. thanks jason for bringing us these great conversations! LISTEN AND ENJOY, PEOPLE.
