051: Review: Cars 2 | Cars 2 is a fun thrill ride with beautiful animation and some heart. It may not attain the profundity of of a film like The Incredibles or Toy Story 3, but it serves up a breathtaking good time. Movie blogger Lauren Smith and I talk about what we loved about the film, as well as where we thought it didn't quite live up to previous Pixar offerings. For full show notes, visit: http://thepixarpodcast.com/51 The digital tape started rolling right after seeing Cars 2, so what you get it is our initial takes on the film, rather than a thoroughly thought-out analysis. We also give our thoughts on the Brave teaser trailer (which is rumored to not have a debut online anytime soon) and the first Toy Story short, Hawaiian Vacation. The episode is divided into general and spoiler territory, but even in the spoiler section, we never give away anything big. Enjoy! 041: Teddy Newton (from the Pixar Talk Archive) | As Oscar Month comes to a close, we bring you one more interview with a nominated Pixarian. Teddy Newton spoke with Pixar Talk's Greg Mariotti in June 2010 about his short film, Day and Night, which was later nominated for Best Animated Short. Greg transcribed the interview and published it on the Pixar Talk blog last year. For the first time, we have a chance to hear that interview in its original audio format. For full show notes, visit: http://thepixarpodcast.com/41 To read the transcript, visit Pixar Talk: http://www.pixartalk.com/2010/06/exclusive-teddy-newton/ This episode includes clips from Teddy Newton's work in animation, all available on DVD now: -Toy Story 3 (voice of Chatter Phone), available through Disney. -The Incredibles (voice of News Narrator), available through Disney. -The Iron Giant (story artist for 1950s "Duck and Cover" sequence), available through Warner Bros. Want to see more of Teddy Newton? The Iron Giant DVD has a spotlight feature called "The X Factor" in which Brad Bird talks about this talented artist. The segment also features the original storyboard version of the "Duck and Cover" sequence. 032: The Future of Pixar: What Lies Ahead? (From 2006) | Jan 24, 2006: The day that Disney bought Pixar for $7.4 billion. Six months later, I recorded my first ever podcast episode--long before I ever thought that I would start an actual podcast. And now, five years to the date of that historic merger, I am releasing this old recording to you listeners. I'm hoping you will find it as enjoyable as I did to be able to look back with me--to the time when wounds were fresh between Pixar and Disney, and at the start of the era of Pixar history we are currently living in. As you listen to me talk as a voice from the past, consider how you felt about the Disney-Pixar merger back when it happened. Have your feelings changed? Let me know either way--especially by calling in to leave your opinion in a message. You can also email me! The info is down below. For full show notes, visit: http://thepixarpodcast.com/32 And in the spirit of looking back, a couple of links for you: From my personal blog (which is due for an update soon), a story I wrote back in 2006 (on the day of the merger itself). It's a satiric look at Disney and Pixar as a struggling couple who finally decide to work out their differences for the sake of the children: http://thetruthaboutderrick.blogspot.com/2006/01/excerpt-to-infinity-and-back-again.html From CNN, an article covering the merger (and a poll that you can still take about whether or not you thought it was a wise move on Disney's part!): http://money.cnn.com/2006/01/24/news/companies/disney_pixar_deal/ The Pixar Podcast www.thepixarpodcast.com 24/7 Comment line: (801)709-0652 thepixarpodcast@gmail.com twitter.com/ThePixarPodcast facebook.com/ThePixarPodcast | 1/24/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

025: Craig Good | Craig Good has been at Pixar since 1982, when it was still a division of Lucasfilm, Ltd (LFL). He started as a janitor and security guard with an interest in computers. That interest led to some on-the-job training in programming and eventually the job he has today as a layout artist working on the upcoming feature Brave. He tells this story on today's episode. He also explains what a layout artist does and how Pixar's rendering software works. Craig was recorded in Pixar's sound studio, where voice actors record dialogue, so the sound quality is superb. Listen to hear him talk about "student" films he and his fellow Pixar employees have been involved in recently, and other great stories from his time at Pixar. The images seen on the show notes for this episode at http://thepixarpodcast.com/25 are used by permission and may not be reproduced or distributed: Craig as an Improv coach at a benefit. Craig at work in the graphics room at LFL in the 1980s. "I don't remember the occasion," he said, "but this was way before the Pixar Image Computer existed as hardware. 013: Elyse Klaidman and René de Guzman (interview by journalist Jennifer Inez Ward) | Jennifer Inez Ward sits down with Elyse Klaidman (Director of Pixar University and Archives) and Rene de Guzman (Senior Curator of Art at OMCA) to talk about the museum exhibit Pixar: 25 Years of Animation, currently showing at the Oakland Museum of California. She conducted the interview for her review of the exhibit back when it opened in July. It was so thrilling for Jennifer to be so kind as to offer to send me the audio to her interview. I had never considered asking for that. Her feeling was that because everything she writes for Oakland Local and her blog are the written text, it is a shame that the reader can't usually hear the entire audio interviews. Now, through the podcast, you can! The exhibit runs in the Oakland Museum of California through Jan. 9, 2011. Go see it! 007: Twitter Story | Toy Story 3 had one of the greatest marketing campagin in the history of films. Much of that was because of the faithful tweeting of the director, Lee Unkrich. He made fans feel like they were part of the filmmaking process many months before the movie was released. It was his birthday last week, so this episode features a look back at his life--on Twitter. 005: Pixar: 25 Years of Animation Museum Exhibit | In The Pixar Podcast's first ever Special Feature episode, guest Jennifer Inez Ward comes on to discuss the new museum exhibit in Oakland, "Pixar: 25 Years of Animation." 003: News: July 27, 2010 | Has Pixar gone sequel CRAZY?!; A fan in the UK legally changes his name to Buzz Lightyear; and Which Pixar characters have gotten involved in drugs? For full show notes, visit: http://thepixarpodcast.com/3 Film.com has put Inception and Toy Story 3 as the top choices for Best Picture nominees this year. Christopher Nolan/Toy Story trailers (FUNNY! MUST WATCH! Go to www.thepixarpodcast.com for the links!) FindingNemo 2 and 3 in the works? An old Walt Disney "sequel" that blew my mind. Fan mail to Lee. John Scalzi on filmcritic.com shared his Buzz Lightyear movie idea. Real life Buzz Lightyears. And real-life WALL-E and EVE? And finally, the Oakland Museum's website And one more comment, if I may, about FindingNemo2.com, which I mentioned has been owned by Disney since 2000. While it DOES seem possible that Disney could have been just securing the spot online, it is also possible that Disney was already planning a sequel as this was a very sequel-driven time for the company, and Pixar had by this time proven itself it be a great moneymaker for the company. Then again, Michael Eisner is now infamous for his public opinion that Nemo would be Pixar's first box office flop (it became their most successful). Who knows? | 7/27/10 | Free | View In iTunes |
