Episode 65 - Men and Women in Tights | Banes and Ozoneocean round off the topic of superheroes, beating that wonderhorse to death well and truly. There's a lot of reminiscing here about ancient superhero pop-culture and along the way we discuss silver age and golden age comics, supervillains, second stringer superheros and why the remain that way, the gender and culture appeal of some characters, evolution of superheroes towards realism and grit, then webcomic superheroes, especially those on DD, and then finish up with why we like superheroes. Sidekick Captain-Ozone continues to echo disturbingly from the void while the real hero, Ultra-Banes, continues to bring the humour. We decide that it all comes back to Superman and Batman, who are the ultimate prototypes for the two main types of superheros: super, good, and perfect Vs normal, flawed, and human. Episode 63 - Working for a living | Dressed in a long, tight fitting sparkly black evening gown and elbow opera gloves, the lovely Skoolmunkee dashes from the scene of the murder of poor Banes to arrive breathless on the Quackcast set and establish her alibi! This week we talk about what us amateur webcomic artists do to support ourselves, or just in those few brief moments when we're not actually making webcomics, and how that affects, influences and changes our webcomic work. We have many interesting contributions from interesting people! I must once again apologise for the sound quality though, major computer trouble I'm afraid. Episode 61 - SOPA, PIPA, ACTA, copyright and webcomics | Summery: It's a rather dry Quackcast this week I'm afraid as I tackle a subject that has been very much in the news lately and a hot topic all over the net- and that is all the various proposed laws and trade agreements covering copyright, intellectual property and how they can possibly affect webcomics, webcomic hosting and online creative communities in general. My take on these things is a bit individual and editorial so I'm sorry for that, but I did do a modicum of research beforehand so it's not all opinion! We also have the 5th installment of our ongoing DD comedy soap with great voice acting by many clever people and once again featuring the brilliant edditing skills of Banes. There's even some clever digs at copyright and IP! Quackcast 60 Jillyfoo Interview: Part 2 | This is Part 2 of my interesting chat with Jillyfoo (popular artist and creator of Demon Eater). Here she chats about various interesting subjects particularly applicable to webcomic creation from what she uses to keep her inspired while working, to how to make money and network at conventions and what sorts of things she finds most appealing in other webcomics. There's also a bit of general chat and reminiscing, you've been warned! As with last week's installment, I apologise for the poor audio quality of the interview portion- my connection was bad so this interview had to be edited and cut somewhat as a consequence. See Jillyfoo's stuff here: http://www.drunkduck.com/user/JillyFoo/ We also have part 4 of our exciting drunk duck soap "What happened wile I was away?". Quackcast 59 Interesting use of artistic media and technique- Jillyfoo interview | This week I have a long and interesting interview with the talented comic creator Jillyfoo. Some may have seen her very fantastic and popular comic Demon Eater. She's a very long term creator here on DD whose been an active contributor to many interesting comic discussions and a fervent supporter of many comics on the site. We discuss her approach to the different and unusual media she uses in her comic as well as comic creation in general. We also have contributions from a couple of people and the third instalment of our exciting drunk duck soap "What happened wile I was away?". Episode 56 - BASO Profundo Post Feature Interview | This particular Quackcast marks the very first time I've ever interviewed a featured comic creator, just after his feature! Genejoke was kind enough to descend from his palatial Robinson Crusoe style palm tree manor house on the tropical shores of southern Britain, wearing a rumpled cream linen suit and a white panama hat. Sipping a dry Martini in the hot noon sun he slipped on his half coconut headphones and spoke into a conch shell for the interview about his fantastic featured SciFi space opera comic: B.A.S.O - See Genejoke's profile and his stuff here: http://www.drunkduck.com/user/Genejoke Featured comics: Long Conversations About Nothing - http://www.drunkduck.com/Long_Conversations_About_Nothing/ B.A.S.O. - http://www.drunkduck.com/BASO/ Our contributors: - Gullas - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/gullas - Skoolmunkee - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/skoolmunkee We're also starting a new radio soap. Anyone can contribute to the ongoing story here: - http://www.drunkduck.com/forum/topic/174836/ We'll try and make it more interesting and funny so it can be read out weekly on the Quackcast. This is highly experimental though. (I skipped this week, WiIl pick it up next week, I promise!) Next week's Quackcast number 57 is the Christmas Quackcast! Please contribute by posting your stuff here: - http://www.drunkduck.com/forum/topic/174847/ *it WAS supposed to be this week, but I thought it'd fit better in number 57, where I do the Secret Santa interview with Rokulily. | 12/20/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode 55 - Genres Revisited | My attractive assistant Skoolmunkee agreed to another guest appearance in order to re-adress this topic. I asked people about their favourite webcomic genres, why they like them and what makes them so cool and interesting, whether it's the genre they like to read or create in. The genres we covered chiefly in your previous genre Quackcast (number 29, http://www.drunkduck.com/quackcast/episode-29-genres-generally-speaking/), were fantasy, slice of life, post apocalypse, and spiritual, and declared that post apocalypse the winner. This time we all decide that steam/diesel/cyberpunk is best! We briefly try and tackle superheros, but nothing much comes out of it except the brown Lantern... Featured comics: Wyyrd Vintage - http://www.drunkduck.com/Wyyrd_Vintage/ Cute 'N Spicy - http://www.drunkduck.com/Cute_N_Spicy/ Our contributors: - Genejoke - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/Genejoke/ - Ayesinback - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/ayesinback/ - RPGgrnade - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/RPGgrenade/ - Bravo1192 - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/bravo1102/ - Ozoneocean - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/ozoneocean/ Some important factors about genre that you have to keep in mind as a creator: - What genre does your work best fit into? - this helps when you want to be able to describe and “sell” your comic to others. - What other comics are also in that same genre? - This helps when you want to know what comic you should advertise on or compare yourself to. - What are the key identifiers of the genre you’re creating in? - this can help you better appeal to fans of that genre or even give you new ideas on directions of where to o with your comic. - What can you use and what can you subvert? Some writing or drawing exercises involving genre: - Take a basic story premise and adapt it (briefly) into different genres. (Try a plot generator). Think about how the story changes to fit into that genre, what tropes it taps into, whether it has to follow rules, etc. - Try taking a character from one genre and sticking them into another. (These stories tend to end up being kind of silly, but I’ve ready some pretty entertaining “wrong genre” stories.) - A single piece of work usually is made up of several genres. Take a favourite comic or story and try to identify what’s being drawn into it. - Writing exercise in genres - http://www.bisg.org/what-we-do-0-136-bisac-subject-headings-list-major-subjects.php W | 12/13/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode 54 - Creative Backgrounds, Under the Influence | What are the things from your background that have influenced your comic work? What are the events, images, situations, lessons, film, music, people, ideologies, and experiences that have served as your creative fuel? This is what I wanted to know about for this Quackcast, so we have various DD comic artists describing the inspiration fuel cells that power their work. Topics and show Notes Featured Comics: 1946 - http://www.drunkduck.com/1946/ Joseph - http://www.drunkduck.com/Joseph/ Genejoke's inspirational pics in the influences and background thread: - http://www.drunkduck.com/forum/topic/174813/#2953641 Our contributors: - Ayesinback - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/ayesinback/ She's a maker- wanting to create, mainly because she can do it better than what she can get. Comics are a way to explore whimsical ideas and fancies, redirecting her creative imperative. - NickyP - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/NickyP/ Real life situations are what drives his work. - PIT_FACE - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/PIT_FACE/ The cover of a Judge Dread comic she saw as a child was a strong influence. - Genejoke - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/Genejoke/ Growing up in the 80s, horror movie monsters, RPGs, Scifi and fantasy, games, and a whole range of visual inspiration and popculture. - Abt_Nihil - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/Abt_Nihil/ Philosophy, politics, ideology, great films and anime and bodaciously sexy women - RPGgrenade - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/RPGgrenade/ Clever, funny tropes from anime and manga and the whole convoluted culture of competitive bar-tending, mixology, and cocktails. - Ozoneocean - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/ozoneocean/ Glam rock, Tank Girl, Gem and the holograms and battleships are things I mention. | 12/6/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

They also chat a little bit about contests and things which contest-creators might think about. Topics and Show Notes We hope everyone listened to the Drunk Duck Radio Play in last week's Quackcast! Episode 43 - Maxwell McDuff, Private Eye | This extra-special Quackcast is all about ayesinback and the 2011 Drunk Duck Radio Play! A big effort by a lot of people, it's presented here along with a great chat with ayesinback, czarina of the project. Topics and Show Notes What is ayesinback's secret identity? Why is she among us? What has she been doing in our midst? What were her experiences developing the first voice contest, and the massive Radio Play? ayesinback was a very charming guest and we are very pleased to have her on the show to unveil Maxwell McDuff, Private Eye, in The Karaoke Caper! Since this episode is so special, we decided to postpone the features discussion to next week (when there will be four to talk about, again). Also we do apologize for the slightly inferior sound quality of the interview, Skype recording doesn't always come out great. The Radio Play starts at 28:35, if you want to be one of those people who skip right to it. :] The music found in the Quackcast (not the Radio Play) is by Kevin MacLeod: http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/ Related links: ayesinback - http://www.drunkduck.com/user/ayesinback/ DD Name That Voice Contest - http://www.drunkduck.com/forum/topic/148046/ 2011 DD Voice Contest Radio Play Comic http://www.drunkduck.com/2011_Drunk_Duck_Voice_Contest_Radio_Play/ Happy Birthday IS under copyright - http://www.snopes.com/music/songs/birthday.asp | 9/20/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode 41 - The Best Laid Plans, Awry and A Wreck | ozoneocean had big plans for his trip to San Diego Comic Con to promote his comic, which basically went completely wrong in almost every way possible. He tells his story and what he did to try and recover. What could go wrong for you and what would you do? Show Notes: The best way to recover from Plan A going wrong is to have a Plan B... but it's hard to predict what might mess up. We discuss some common ways that convention and webcomic plans go awry and some things which could be done to mitigate the pain. With conventions it's all the problems oz had: costs, merchandise and promo material not arriving, etc... and with webcomics you get things like losing collaborators, hosting going down, and so on. There's some questions you might ask yourself, and a good attitude never hurts!
