Episode 45 - 2010 Build Challenge | Hey everybody! This is a heads up that the 2010 Sawdust Chronicles Build Challenge is looking for entries. Here are the rules to the contest, and the project to design and create will be revealed on the first day of the Challenge. Something I don't mention in the podcast: I know that there seems to be a lot of contests, build-offs, and other woodworking competitions going on right now. If you feel like you want to compete in other contests and not the Challenge, I completely understand. If you sign up for the Challenge, but find out that with your other commitments that you don't have time to finish the project, please tell us right away so we don't keep bothering you with emails about submitting your project photos and story. I believe that what the TSDC Build Challenge offers is much more than what you will receive elsewhere. What sets us apart:Our genuine concern that you understand the competition and the rules/restrictionsOur willingness to have experts help you along the wayWe are focused on getting novice woodworkers familiar with design, and the scheduling/planning of a buildWe are concerned with the ideal use of your time and effortOur Challenges are set within strict time restraints to help simulate a real life commission example | 7/29/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode 40 - A Welcomed Critique | Hey everybody! While I was at the New England Home Show (NEHS), Neil Lamens showed me a new creation of his. It's a lamp/side table combo piece that I'll podcast at a later date. The base of the lamp is a stack lamination which got my creative juices flowing once again. The next morning, at breakfast, I came up with a new table design. I plan on making this table in the Fall, around the time of the next The Sawdust Chronicles Build Challenge. During a trip to the Society of American Period Furniture Makers in CT, Neil critiqued my table design on camera (with the help of David Pruett). Unfortunately, the microphones weren't plugged into the camera properly and the 40 minute video was scrapped. I recently talked with Neil on Skype about the table again, and this episode is that critique. Enjoy. Check out http://thesawdustchronicles.com for the SketchUp of the table in question. | 3/11/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode 26 - Dale Barnard | Dale Barnard is the owner of Barnard Woodworking School in Paoli, IN. I had the privilege of meeting Dale during the Woodworking in America conference in St. Charles, IL. I met Dale while at lunch on the first day of the conference, and we quickly decided to record an interview about Dale and his school. Please excuse the background noise, this interview was conducted in the Market Place and there were a lot of people walking around, and children playing nearby. I tried to reduce the noise to a minimum, but it's never the greatest. Please visit Dale's website and consider attending his woodworking school. Note: During the interview I asked Dale if the Saw Stop saves him on insurance. He tells me in the interview that it does, but later he called me to let me know that they do not receive a discount on insurance. Contacting Dale: Dale Barnard 812-723-3461 1714 E. Owl Hollow Rd. Episode 22 - WIA Oscar Fitzgerald | While at Woodworking in America, I had the opportunity to talk with Oscar Fitzgerald after his session 20th Century American Furniture and Why You Should Like It. Anyone who has an interest in furniture would like this session. Of the 7 sessions that I went to, Mr. Fitzgerald's was probably the most energetic. I described it later to several people as if we were shot through a cannon made up of 100 years of American furniture. I was especially pleased to see some of my favorites included in the fast-paced presentation, such as Jere Osdood, Hopkins and Wendell Castle. But he didn't limit it to my preferences, he also included several pieces from Maloof, Frank Lloyd Wright, many other Arts & Crafts designers/builders, and reproductionists. | 8/24/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode 9 - Special Guests: Neil Lamens and Pete Bretzke - Part 2 | While we started off the conversation with a lengthy announcement about the TSDC Spring 2009 30-Day Build Challenge, Erik, Pete, Neil and I quickly got into many varying topics of woodworking and wound up eventually waxing a bit philosophic. There were quite a few times when we either got off topic, or one of the people on the call wanted us to remove something that was said, so if it seems as though we spliced a conversation together, that's what happened. We didn't put words in anyone's mouth by splicing the stuff together. In fact, in some cases, the entire dialog was removed. Also, one note about the episode. Pete's Internet connection was having a slight problem and his audio kept getting lost. So if you here 1 or 2 second gaps in the audio while Pete's talking, that's the reason. The main purpose for the timing of this episode, though, was to kick off the build challenge. As soon as you get a chance, listen to this show, in 2 or 3 parts, and go to http://thesawdustchronicles.com and check out the rules for the 30-day build challenge. We REALLY need applicants for this contest, and there are great prizes for the winners. The first 10 applicants will receive prizes. Thanks for listening, and enjoy!OK, I know that the audio ended kind of abruptly, but the conversation kind of drifted off and ended with our wives coming in and pulling us away from our computers.Ok, maybe it was just my wife doing that... Anyway, if you would like to get in touch with either Erik or myself, please send us an email at thesawdustchronicles@gmail.com. If you'd like to comment on this episode, please go to the podcast's website at http://thesawdustchronicles.com.And, if you'd like to enter the contest, PLEASEPLEASEPLEASE go to thesawdustchronicles.com, and follow the links to the TSDC Spring 2009 Build Contest, and email us a completed entry application. Since, to this date, there is only one contestant, we REALLY need more of you to enter just to claim all of the prizes. So, a contingency for this contest, if we don't receive enough applications from beginners, is to give away the major prizes to the more experienced contestants too.Links:http://Woodjerk.wordpress.comhttp://www.furnitology.com./ | 3/31/09 | Free | View In iTunes |
