He joins us today to discuss the role of tactical medical training for the preparedness lifestyle. After today you may see the phrase “tactical medical” in a new light as it doesn’t always involve bullets and an active shooter scenario. Anytime there is a lack of support, an element of danger (natural or man made) and an imminent need for treatment, we can find ourselves in a “tactical situation”, which of course means it can happen any given day of the week. It provides for irrigation, hydration, fire suppression, cooking, sanitation and more. Yet have you noticed 99% of suburban landscapes are devoid of water other than swimming pools and sprinkler systems. We have lost on of the key pieces of what water can do for us do to this. Did you know that water can move nutrients and fertility around your property? In doing this it can actually catch and rebound energy before it atrophies off your property. Episode-901- Learning From the Holzer – The Good and the Bad | Wheaton and Holzer on an Earlier Project So I traveled about 2,000 miles to meet one of my absolute heroes in permaculture and sustainable agriculture. The experience was not really what I expected. The knowledge I gained was worth all the effort, planning and time away but the way I gained it was the more surprising part. To sum it up, I learned a lot from what Sepp did but not much from what he said. I also am very excited to be planning my own events in the future and have to say I learned a lot about what not to do by the organization “Place of Gathering” when I run my events. Tune in today to hear… What we are doing isn’t hugelkultur (sort of) What hugelkultur really is and why it does and doesn’t matter Why I think even most permaculture practitioners have “limited thinking” The lesson of Vettezuki The lesson of the rose hips The lesson of Permaculturist A vs. Permaculturist B The role of water on a farm, more than irrigation The lesson of the excavators The best seeds, you can’t get in America, yet Polyculture to the max, you really don’t get it till you see it Recipes vs. observation vs. common decency and strait answers Teaching, doing or both, what are we good at The dangers of “hero worship” and how to avoid it The need to actually listen to those who have done it Additional Resources for Today’s Show Members Support Brigade TSP Copper Join Our Forum Harvest Eating – (sponsor of the day) Free State Project – (sponsor of the day) Video with some of my 5 foot pepper plants from Arlington Video with more 4-5 foot pepper plants Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon. Episode-899- Security During a Break Down – (TSP Classic Orginally Episode 489) | When I first ran this episode in August of 2010 my good friend Bryan Black from ITS Tactical stated, “This is likely the most important thing on security you have ever done.” We are going to look at a bit of a darker subject today. We are going to discuss security and not security on a day to day basis against say robbers, thugs and general low life. We are going to discuss security and security planning for large scale and long term break downs. Today’s show was prompted by Episodes 1 and 2 of season two of Discovery Channel’s show “The Colony”. I have watch thus far in disbelief at how little attention the people on that show have paid to security and how little they understand the threat and honestly survival as a whole. Today’s show won’t be totally based on The Colony, it will simply use it as a jumping off point so even if you haven’t or don’t plan on watching it today’s show should be a good one for you. Security is one of the five primary components of survival and the one that is most overlooked, often not an issue but the one that when needed can get you killed in a millisecond. Join me today as we discuss… The five primary components of survival Food Water Shelter Fire Security Understanding the threat to your safety Consideration about where you “make your stand” Six methods of attack mitigation Appease Impede Repel Evade Misdirect Terminate Identifying the weak spots The lesson of 300 – Funnel an enemy to counter large numbers How and why guns change the entire equation on both sides The importance and difference between security “protocols” and “procedures” Splitting up resources – no central storage points Developing and deploying decoy resources Developing timberlines and evac plans Resources for today’s show… Members Support Brigade Join Our Forum Common Sense Prep – (sponsor of the day) Western Botanicals – (sponsor of the day) The Colony on Discovery Ron Hood’s Survival.com Magazine Remember to comment, chime in and tell us your thoughts, this podcast is one man’s opinion, not a lecture or sermon. Episode-898- Permaculture Design Considerations (TSP Classic Originally Epi-606) | Today’s Episode was originally broadcast a episode 606 in February of 2011. In this episode we look at 11 design considerations when designing a permaculture food system. Honestly though permaculture or not these considerations really should be considered with all landscape development. Unfortunately they are largely ignored or misunderstood in America today. By taking these 11 components into consideration you will see your property in a new light whether it is 1/10 of an acre, 10 acres or a 1000 acres. Of course there are more considerations and interactions than these 11 but by considering these factors in your design you will end up with a functional, productive and sustainable design. Episode-895- Will Bratton and Sam Bagot on Open Source Agriculture | Sam Bagot and Will Bratton are woking togehter on an open source agriculture project called horto domi. Horto domi is an open hardware raised-bed garden unit with environmental control and monitoring via web-interface thanks to Arduino Ethernet. DIY sensors, such as those collecting moisture and temperature data help monitor the environment within the dome and will eventually be used to automate conditions. The goal is to grow whatever you want, whenever you want, wherever you are. Horto domi is Latin for ‘Garden at home.’ It’s a statement to healthful food independence, a “neo-renaissance” tip of the hat to Arduino, and it sounds like horticultural dome. Particular consideration was taken in this prototype’s design to maximize the mineral and nutrient value of the beyond-organic produce and minimize environmental contamination risks. Sam and Will are looking for Kickstarter funding that will satisfy all the elements necessary for an open hardware publication per the definition provided by FreedomDefined.org/OSHW. However, with additional funding they will be able to pursue further open source innovation, development and publication. They hope our community will support their idea for using contemporary open technology to achieve relative food independence so that we may all better address the goal of individual and community self sufficiency. Episode-893- Why Being a Lone Wolf Won’t Work for 99% or More of Disasters | Even Wolves Survive in Packs Many preppers seem to think telling anyone, anything about your views on preparedness is a huge mistake. They point out it might make you a target of everyone who isn’t prepared when doomsday comes. Others seem to embody the very reasons others are so tight lipped about their preps. These are the self absorbed jackasses that state nonsense like, “My AR15 and 2,000 round are all the survival kit I will ever need”. Such people live in a world of Hollywood B movies and fan fiction novels. In the real world such tactics are seldom effective for a variety of reasons. This is why I have always taught that while there is a place for basic and common sense opsec it is still highly important to build community for both day to day living and for the eventual reality of a possible or even probable disaster. Recently I got an email that caused me to do this show, it read as follows… “Jack I grew way too many potatoes this year and have over 100 pounds more than I can use. I thought about selling them at the farmer’s market but that might make me a magnet when TSHTF, I thought about the neighbors but that may even be worse in attracting people if there is a disaster and I thought about donating them to a church but again that might make me a magnet if the SHTF, what should I do with all these extra potatoes. Here is what my wife did when I read this to her Rolled her eyes Sighed and laughed Asked “is he serious?” Stated, “well if he is that paranoid just donate them anonymously” Asked, “has he been listening to you at all?” While her response was great there were two bigger points here, Unencumbered by paranoia she found a solution in about 30 seconds, donate anomalously She saw at once the folly in the paranoia I get a lot of emails that tell me many of the people in the audience are not yet sold on the true community aspects of prepping, so today I present to you 10 reasons why the lone wolf approach will not work in 99% or more disasters. Join Me Today As I Discuss… What are humans at their core Why is communication considered critical by even the lone wolf 10 reasons you can’t go it alone or in a “tactical squad” successfully 1. Most disasters will not result in total break down 2. Most people can’t afford the resources for long term self reliance 3. You can only prey on others while they have something to take 4. Episode-892- Richard Morgan from GreatNorthernPrepper.com | Check Out GreatNorthernPrepper.com Richard Morgan grew up in the arctic and later joined the Marine Corps completing two tours in Iraq. After leaving the Marines he contracted with a well known defense contracting agency for about three years in Afghanistan and Iraq. During this time he became interested in the Prepping lifestyle after reading James Rawles’ books and spending time on a friend’s “remote military outpost” in northern New Mexico. After that experience Richard decided to approach prepping in same fashion until later when he stumbled upon a more even minded approach. He soon discovered sensible prepping was about setting realistic goals, building on them with more knowledge, increasing self reliance supplies and above all teaching others so they could be be more prepared in a time of crisis. Episode-884- Brandon Shelton of Bella Medical Ministries | BELLA Ministries on Relief Work in Haiti Brandon Shelton founded BELLA Medical Ministries after his first medical relief trip to Haiti immediately following the earthquake in Jan. 2010 that killed over 250,000+ men, women and children as well as left over 1 million homeless. BELLA’s core team is made up experienced Paramedics and Critical Care Paramedics who have either a prior military or LEO background. These prior life experiences enable them to adapt to the austere living/working conditions and unstable security situations that make up the disaster zones and areas of extreme poverty to which they deploy. The BELLA teams (both in disaster deployments and larger follow up support missions) arrive in the operational area with the ability to be 100% self-sufficient (for 2 weeks) in the areas of food, water purification equipment, shelter, security & a large inventory of medicines/supplies. They do this so as not to be a burden on the already overwhelmed support systems and/or to their hosts. This self-sufficient model dovetails into the preparedness lifestyle very well. BELLA’s founding members are all preppers and each deployment or follow up mission trip they do gives them the opportunity to test gear and skills that we have in their personal preparedness plans. Following an initial disaster deployment they return home with detailed reports that they deliver to local churches and other groups so that they can become involved in ongoing relief efforts by either sending supplies/funds that are needed or by having BELLA lead a team of their members back to the effected region. Episode-883- Victor Alfieri on the Urban Homesteading Movement | Vic Alfieri with His 3 Hens Victor Alfieri lives just 17 miles from New York City on a 1/4 acre lot but he hasn’t let that stop him from being a modern homesteader. For Victor It all started after hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast when he started to see things a little differently. While he wasn’t directly effected by the hurricane it got him thinking about being more prepared. He began researching the aftermath and to him there was one thing that stood out. No one was prepared not the general public, not the local government and certainly not the federal government. Then a year or so later, he and his wife who both had financial business backgrounds began observing signs of bad times ahead. This put them on a course for research which began with the internet and frequent trips to the library. Victor found an old book about the depression in 1930′s and started to remember the stories my grandmother would tell me about how they survived the depression. Eventually he discovered square foot gardening and small livestock, specifically keeping laying hens. His hens eventually put him on a course of conflict with his local government where he continues to fight for the right of people to simply provide themselves with top quality home grown food. Episode-877- CB Radio as a Practical Prep with Clay Vitis | The Galaxy 979 is my Personal Choice for an Upper End SSB CB Radio Clay Vitis is a long haul truck driver who uses CB both in his daily work and as a fellow prepper. Clay is also a licensed HAM however he spends most of his time on the CB bands. He joins us today to discuss the ins and outs of CB radio communications for every day prepping. Note to all HAMs, today’s show is NOT why CB is better than HAM or vice verse, it is about CB as a technology for preppers. We have a HAM radio episode planned with Expert Council Member Tim Glance scheduled in the future. It is my belief that HAM and CB both have their places and HAM is far more specialized, making it practical for the specialist and not quite so practical for the guy that doesn’t turn a radio very often other than for specific events or while traveling. Join Clay and I Today as we Discuss… Cheap CB Options How much do you need to spend on the equipment What brands or models offer a good value Base station, mobile or handheld The capabilities of lower end equipment Upper end cb options What constitutes a “good” cb Where are the best places to find upper end equipment Why upper end cb’s perhaps are not always the best “value” Upper and lower sideband and their practicality Antennas for CB Radios Antenna options for mobile and base station use The idea of “homebrewing” an antenna Creating stealth antennas Optional equipment Tuning meters Amplifiers (including legal/ethical issues ) Fun with CB’s A cool game you can play with fellow breakers Learning the technology, community and geography at the same time Realize there is more to CB that the “one nine” Practicality of CB from a survival/prepper standpoint Ready to run “out of the box” Inexpensive Reliable Can be taken to specialized levels but not specialized Lots of users (especially during a disaster) Plug and play installation with portability Great for general travel info Resources for Today’s Show Members Support Brigade TSP Gear Shop Join Our Forum Sawtooth Tactical – (sponsor of the day) Knife Kits – (sponsor of the day) The World of CB Radio – Book I mentioned on air Confessions of a Real CB Nut – The kindle edition is only a dollar and I found it a fascinating read about CB and its evolution along side armature radio. It explains a lot about the current issues with over amping and some other things. It is also a great look back at American before the internet, the 60s, 70s and 80s in particular. Life for a traveling working man in rural America, entrepreneurship, etc. Lastly, the kindle edition deffinitely has some real issues that must have happened during conversion of the old book. For instance it says “don’t” in every instance that should say “doesn’t”, but it doesn’t take away from the book if you just over look it, can’t speak for the text version. Episode-875- Rick Worden of Rise and Shine Rabbitry | The Satin is a Great Dual Purpose Rabbit Rick Worden has promoting rabbits for homestead use and personally raising rabbits for 30 + years and feels every homestead should be raising rabbits due to their tremendous impact toward greater self sufficiency. Rick’s company is Rise and Shine Rabbitry a small rabbitry in Mechanic Falls, Maine. Their rabbits get premium care since they only raise a small number. All rabbits are kept in individual raised cages inside a hoop-house, in the barn and some hutches outside. Rabbits are shaded through the summer heat with shade cloth and kept warm and dry all winter while enjoying the company of a flock of silkies for bug control. Twice a day the rabbits have pasture plants and grasses and other homegrown produce scythed for them and served up fresh (in season), so even though the rabbits are not “pastured” they are still reaping the benefits of a nutritious and natural diet. Through the winter months the rabbits are fed hay and their diet is also supplemented year-round with a pelleted feed and root crops also an herbal hay mix the Wordens dry that and store for the winter rabbit “blahs”. Rick is also growing sprouts and experimenting with other homegrown foods to grow in their short season.
