Riding high on the techno scene’s recent climate change with grooves that twist and turn each bar yet never loose the consistent grasping control over your body’s lower torso; Livio and Roby have been producing percussive prompted beats with a natural European zest long before the majority of today’s techno dj’s ripped back the parched electronic layer to reveal a more organic house sound. Displaying exceptional production skills, early releases and remixes appeared on Lawler's Global Underground "Lights out 3" and "Viva" compilations. On top of clearly knowing their way around a pair of turntables, 2007 followed with releases thick and fast; the classic simplicity of their gritty underground sound, assembled into increasingly energetic tracks made Livio and Roby one of the most visible names of the deep house resurgence. 2008 saw the pair share the turntables alongside Loco Dice in Romania resulting in the ultimate testament to their musical talent. Dice welcomed Livio and Roby into his community of creativeness, promptly inviting then to join both his booking agency Artist Alife and much applauded label Desolat where they went on to release “Mistique” in collaboration with their pal George G. From their early appearance in the booth with Loco Dice and Martin Buttich at Cocoons Ibiza residency to recent singles on Nick Curly’s Cecille imprint, the two Romania producers have built quite a reputation for themselves that really justifies the heavy hype that's been surrounding them of late. Labels including Viva Music, Cecille and Loco Dice’s eminent Desolat have welcomed the deep duo to explore a now signature sound, that's awash in the beats that made many of us fall for house in the first place. The Terrace :: Ricardo Villalobos :: 2702 | The Terrace Podcast Episode 194 presents an outstanding DJ set by one of the greatest Techno Icons; Ricardo Villalobos Ricardo Villalobos is a Chilean electronic music producer and DJ. He is well-known for his work in the minimal techno and microhouse genres. Villalobos was born in the capital of Chile, Santiago, in the year 1970. However, at the age of three he moved to Germany with his family after General Augusto Pinochet overthrew the socialist government of Salvador Allende in 1973. When Ricardo was around 10 or 11 he started to play conga and bongos. Though he loved music, he could never see himself as a musician. In the late eighties he began to make electronic music. From a very young age he has been a a big fan of Depeche Mode, even following their tours around Europe to listen to them. Villalobos takes much of his inspiration from Depeche Mode, as well as other artists such as Daniel Miller, Thomas Melchior, Baby Ford, Daniel Bell and Andrew Weatherall. He has also taken inspiration from rhythmic South American music. Villalobos began to play his music at parties while he was studying at university, but this was only for his own enjoyment. He started a label, Placid Flavour, in 1993 but this was unsuccessful. His first record was released on the German Playhouse label in 1994 and he began DJing as a professional in 1998, and is in present times regarded as one of the most important minimal DJs in Europe, alongside other talented chilean djs and producers such as Luciano Nicolet (an occasional collaborator) and Dandy Jack. Continually evolving and refusing to stick to genre expectations and regulations, you can never predict where he’s going to crop up next - or indeed how he’s going to sound. Recent times have seen him focus once again on the house and techno formats, but creating something fresh therein on each occasion. The Terrace :: Gaiser :: Guest Mix | The Terrace Podcast presents a very Minimalistic Episode by the one and only Gaiser! on Gaiser is a Detroit native whose sound was shaped by the Plus8 events of the nineties. He has been releasing minimal techno on Minus and Resopal Red since late 2005.With an instinctive feel for the intricate mechanics of minimalist sound sculpture, his music contains the perfect balance between rhythmical energy and sonic finesse. Growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Gaiser spent most of his teenage weekends succumbing to the gravitational pull of Detroit, hanging out with friends and going to gigs. At that point he was into punk and playing drums in a few different bands but everything changed around the age of 14 when he experienced his first Techno party. Richie Hawtin was at the controls and Jon was completely blown away by the pure energy of the music and the originality of the sounds. From a musical perspective, everything was so new and fresh that he immediately set about figuring out how it was created. He quit the bands and began collecting drum machines, synths and fx units, before finally moving to Detroit after graduating from high school. For the next few years, if he wasn’t at home patiently programming his machines and perfecting his studio skills, he could be found digging through crates of vinyl at Record Time in Detroit. Plus 8 had an office in the back of the building, so it wasn’t long before he got acquainted with Tim Price, Clark Warner and the rest of the crew and from this chance meeting he has developed into an integral part of the Minus family. It’s not hard to see why. His natural energy and rhythm are clearly responsible for the irresistible drum patterns that drive his productions forward but it’s also the subtleties - the delicate melodies and dramatic changes in atmosphere that give his sound such a distinctive edge. Music has always been in his blood, his early punk rock exploits counter-balanced by the more considered approach needed to learn piano and symphonic percussion and by drawing on these earlier experiences, he has avoided the genre’s more self-referential clichés. Now living in Berlin, Gaiser made a trip in 2009 back where it all began for him all those years ago, mixing and matching his sounds with the rest of the Minus crew on the first leg of the Contakt global tour in Detroit. With his latest releasek 'Static Level / Zebra Talk' he will continue his constant touring across Europe, the US and Japan showcasing his ability to make an immediate connection with the audience, and to soak up the vibe, playing according to their reactions. He’s a musician who lives off his instincts, channeling his moods and emotions directly into his computer, translating new experiences and sensations into sound. 186. The Terrace :: John Lagora :: Guest Mix | John Lagora alias "Tim Wucherpfennig" was born in 1981 in Oberhausen (Ruhr-Area). Thanks to his older brother ,he got infected by electronic music in the age of 11. Listening to old BFBs-based mix tapes of "Steve Mason" was getting his favourite activity. The fast discovery of the darker 8 harder side of electronic music resulted in starting loving hardcore and rave tunes. With the longlasting consumption of the electronic drug,the beats became slower,softer and more experimental for him. In 1995 he got in possesion of the music software "magix musicmaker 1.0",which animates him to do early attempts at walking in the world of music. But very quick he was bored by premade sample collections and looked for new ways,his solution was like that: "I need synthies!" So he went for it and the program "Fruity Loops" (today known as "FL Studio") put things right for John. After a few years dealing with the new software,he started to do his first own stuff. These early steps resulted in his first releases on respected and well-known netlabels,like alquimia,rumpfunk records and zimmer in the year 2006. John received his first positive resonances on these releases from all over the world. Releasing on Netlabels persisted for 1 year,he wanted to go that way and got encouraged by criticisms. In the time of new media-technology,digital platforms like "Beatport 8 Juno" gave him the chance to release music on a way more seriously and professionally. First releases appeared,caught on and gave him that kind of feedback,he needed to go on with what he..s in love: making music! In 2008 John could realise the ne plus ultra of every electronic music producer: releasing on the black beauty,the vinyl record!!! His primary dream of doing music was overtaken and he had the ability to play his own records on gigs. Reboot, aka Frank Heinrich, the 30-year-old Frankfurt musician, started releasing tracks for Combi.int and i220 with his former partner Delle in the duo Delle-Heinrich. Launched only a year ago, Frank's Reboot project is so far responsible for the well-received "Charlotte" for Frankfurt's Below label as well as recent remixes for Greek duo Lemos 8 Kreon, on Be-Chosen and Below. His productions are dedicated to grooves both darkly emphatic and dazzlingly polyrhythmic. Where "Charlotte" was suffused with sweetness and light and tentative time-keeping, Reboot's debut EP for Cadenza Records was released in January 2008 and is considerably darker. A Remix work for Wareika on Connaisseur Recordings followed in February. Up next will be Remixes for Matthias Tanzmann , Guy Gerber and many others. The next Reboot EP is to be expected in summer 2008. Besides that, he started two new Projects. “Sweet Spot” is a project with Vera, the well known Frankfurt Djane. “Lakeof” is a project with DJ Meat, the owner of the Freebase Recordshop. First EP`s and remix works will be released in summer on labels like Cadenza Records or Klang Recordings. Frank's most convincing arguments are his stunning live performances and his DJ-sets. His live sets can be described as sexy and pumping. His DJ sets incorporate the whole spectrum from deep minimal sounds to driving electronic-tech vibes and oldshool House. For the last years Frank has been a regular feature on the electronic dance music scene in Europe playing at clubs such as Cocoon Club, Panoramabar, Club 11, Sueno, Spartacus and many more. The Terrace :: Yaya :: Guest Mix | The Terrace Podcast Presents a Special Guest from The Desolat Family : Episode 175: Yaya In the era of digital revolution, the geography of individual stories draws the lines which blend cultures, lifestyles and different rhythms. Yaya’s geography unravels on three essential cardinal points: Benin, where the roots of his African blood come from, Torino and Ibiza, places of training and achievements. Within Yaya’s electronic work, the echoes of his aphrodisiac background, of a clearly tribal African nature, mix with the sunny Balearic rhythms of new house, deepened through several summers in Ibiza. Yaya grew up in Torino, in the resonant Babylon which was his home, where the rhythms of his father’s drums, singer and leading voice of the renowned group M’bamina, ensemble lining up Italian musicians coming from Zaire, Cameroon and Benin, prophesied a multi-ethnic Italy. With rhythm in his blood, Yaya approaches the sound turmoil which is setting the kinetic nights of Torino’s underground on fire and falls in love with electronic music. Like a child lost in the minimal wave overcoming the techno house scores, Yaya spent his summers in the mid 2000s within Ibiza’s electronic ferment. On the white Island his vivacity lead him to play at several afterhours and his musical assertiveness, reflecting his heterogeneous origins, allowed him to be noticed by the enterpreneurs of the white island’s big electronic circus. An electronic mix combining a full commitment towards all techno house dialogue’s horizons seasoned with tribal influences soaked with an intrusive sound of Italian demand: this is the identikit of the afro-sabaudian lion’s sound. Yaya became part of the Zoo Project in the summer of 2009; the following winter, on Friday nights next to the river Po, Yaya’s roar sets the nights on fire during his slot at Savana Potente. In the afternoons, Yaya spends hours mixing synths of his hybrid sound, storing up a vast library of tracks. The arias of Yaya’s scores reach the ears of Loco Dice, who falls in love with the Afro Latin rumba of Fresca de l’Agua and decides to record the Vecute ep. Yaya thus becomes part of the Desolat family. In December 2009 Do you know Telespalla? is his track in the Desolat X Sampler, double vinyl signed by all the artists of the German academy: Loco Dice, Martin Buttrich, tINI, Guti, Livio 8 Roby. In 2010, thanks to Desolat and Zoo project, Yaya lands in the big meccas of European electronic music: Miami Music Conference, Sonar Barcelona, Fabric London, the Iarmaroc Fest in Romania, the Bermuda festival in Berlin, Goa in Barcelona , Sankeys in Manchester, Mint in Leeds, Silo in Liverpool, Mad in Lousanne, Cocoricò, Magazzini Generali in Italy... In the 2010 summer season in Ibiza, Yaya plays weekly with his residency at the Zoo Project, at the We Love Savana Potente at Space on August 15, and at Ushuaia at the tINI 8 the gang during Desolat’s Wednesday. During Autumn 2010 Yaya spends his weekends alternating between the Independent Republic of Savana Potente, his gigs around Europe and playing often with Loco Dice around Italy. Tell, please,if it is not a secret what programs and the additional equipment are u using? I mainly use Ableton Live for all my productions. This incredible DAW software, let's you edit, manipulate, create, mix and alter audio completely. This is a big part of my productions as i love to experiment with different sounds in order to create a new one. I don't limit myself to this software alone. I use Logic Pro to extend my production, get ideas, and experiment with its synths and sounds. I also use Pro tools, an amazing DAW, strategically for automation, editing and mixing. Each has their advantage over the other, so I alter between them to get more ideas while producing. 2. Tell about some ridiculous situation during your performance or tours? A ridiculous situation presented during my performance was a blackout during the middle of my set. All the power shutdown and it was pitch black for a couple of minutes, which completely killed the vibe and ruined my set, but troubleshooting and dealing with these kinds of situations are part of the gig and I was able to quickly and successfully, recover from it and keep the party going. 3. Do you prefer vinyl or CD? I perform with CDs, but i prefer vinyl. Vinyl emits a brighter, fuller, and a less compressed sound. i love the raspy, crackle, classic noise, that vinyl produces. I use and experiment with this sound in many of my productions. 4. What is your top5(chart) for today? 169. The Terrace :: Sasha :: Guest Mix | The best DJs know that Djing is first about being able to read people and then about being able to tap into that human experience and take it on a journey. Sasha has always been noted for being a master at this, and although his style is described as "Progressive Trance" with a good presence of House and break beat elements; his music has always reached beyond those record store titles, thus separating him from his contemporaries. Sasha creates and plays music that gives emotion a chance to speak. It is this universal appeal that he has tapped into that has established his strong fanbase around the globe. This ability to capture sounds on a universal level was most recently called upon when he was asked to write all the music for Sony Playstation¹s biggest game release of 1999, "Wipeout 3". Sasha wrote 5 original tracks to soundscape the game. "Wipeout 3" won not only the best racing game award, but best game of the whole show. His special touch has also recently been called upon by The Chemical Brothers, who singled him out as the only artist asked to remix a track ("Out Of Control") from their new album. "I just dubbed it out to a style like I would play, the elements and sounds that the Chems used were so good that I didn't want to change them at all", Sasha reports on making the mix. Sasha's resume of chart topping remixes also earned him a request from Madonna in 1998 when he was asked to remix "Ray Of Light" and "Substitute For Love/ Drowned World". Do not be mistaken, this kind of recognition does not happen overnight. Born and raised in a small town in Wales, Sasha was exposed to Motown records when he was just a baby and it was in the home that his talent for playing the piano was developed. His first exposure to house music was at Manchester's Hacienda; just as dance music exploded into the summer of love. This impact encouraged his move from Wales to Manchester. His first exploration into Djing was when a DJ in a local pub announced he was looking for people to play club dates. Sasha volunteered and now says that he "had about 30 records and basically just blagged it". After honing his deck technique, Sasha's first big break came when he was offered a residency at Stokes legendary club Shelly¹s. When all the other DJ's were playing US House, Sasha's style was much more uplifting, and he encapsulated clubbers with his mixture of piano led Italian House whilst playing acapella tracks over the top. This combination alongside a wide variety of anthems kept dancefloors full and elevated Sasha to hero status. Shelly¹s was the launch pad for the residency at Renaissance, where Sasha created his niche and helped forge a new style in UK house music. At Renaissance two major things happened; Sasha mixed the first ever UK DJ mix album and he met John Digweed which cemented the partnership known as "Northern Exposure". Over the past couple of years, Sasha and John have played together on five continents, have mixed 3 "Northern Exposure" albums which have sold to over 1 million people worldwide. This special brother like relationship that Sasha and Digweed have on the decks, is what landed them the monthly residency at New York¹s "Twilo", following in the footsteps of Vasquez and Tenaglia. This residency reached cult status in New York, until the closing of Twilo in 2001. Although Sasha has clearly reached a celebrity status, it¹s his generous personality, his love for his peers and of course his completely candid humour that has enabled him to maintain such a likeable high profile in the often-fickle world of club culture. Shirazinia and Tayebi established Deep Dish Records, and they went on to win a Grammy in 2002 for their remix of Dido's "Thank You." Following their successes as Deep Dish, both Shirazinia and Tayebi began to produce and DJ individually. Shirazinia used his long-time stage name "Dubfire" for his solo productions. Shirazinia's solo sound differs noticeably from that of Deep Dish, consisting of minimal, techno, and house instead of the predominantly progressive house sound of Deep Dish. Born in Naples on February 7, 1975, Marco Carola has emerged in the last four years as one of the city’s most influential exponents of Techno and electronic music. Growing up in the Neapolitan sunshine, by the age of 13 he got behind the skins of his first drum kit which he played for several years before ultimately being addicted to buying and playing records. In 1990, when the Italian House scene was enjoying its golden age alongside the madness of Acid House, Carola`s drum kit was rapidly replaced by a two record player set and a mixer whereupon he practised the art of mixing and learned how to dj to House music’s new dancefloor rhythm. Together with like-minded friends, such as Gaetano Parisio, Davide Squillace, Random Noize, and other Neapolitan clubbers and DJs who were eagerly looking for something new in club music, the transition towards Techno for Carola began in 1993. With the golden age of the Italo-House movement coming to an end Techno offered a complete new vision of possibilities. Creating and experimenting with new and exciting sounds. Around this time Marco Carola also started to think about building a studio in order to express his personal vision of Techno music. His ability to mix music and his emerging studio talent encouraged many artists to record at his studio. Between his many more House oriented releases at this time he even managed to produce a 12" for the highly respected MAW (Masters at Work) imprint. Carola soon found the creative limitations of recording for other people`s labels too restrictive for his own creative output and in 1996 he set about producing material for a new, dynamic sound destined to be released on his very own label. Design Music became the first Italian label focusing purely on Techno music, bursting out of Naples with his own Man Train 12" as the inaugural release. Quickly garnering support from Techno DJs worldwide, Carola`s sound seemed to immediately slot somewhere between Surgeon`s dynamic syncopation, Lost`s cavernous walls of sound, and Blueprint`s hi-fidelity. The label now acts as one of the main lifelines for fresh Techno music from Italy and most notably Naples with new up and coming artists like Gaetek and Random Noize releasing under the Design banner. After Design, Carola founded his 1000 imprint in 1998 in order to produce ultra-fresh DJ music which he could test on his ever expanding international gigging schedule. By 1998, his first Australian tour was under way, swiftly followed by tours of North America where his unique 3 deck, mixing style made him one of the most requested Techno DJs at the time. In January 1998 Marco Carola teamed up with Gadgets mastermind and i220 founder Corrado Izzo and established two new labels in the shape of Zenit and Question as part of the ELP (Electronic Label Pool) umbrella for artists and labels. 3 years of development and networking followed. Since early 2001 Marco Carola lives in London (UK) after a two years break in Frankfurt. 111. The Terrace :: George Morel :: Guest Mix | George Morel has earned worldwide recognition spreading his unique blend of House music in legendary nightclubs to dance audiences around the world. During the summer 2003 and 2004, Morel was invited to have a headline residency in Ibiza at Privilege becoming an overnight success and the third best night for the club following the infamous Manumission and the very local Balearic People. Coming back to Ibiza in 2005 at a brand new club called Penelope in honor to Morel and his record label Groove On. Morel has also appear in Ibiza as a guest DJ at Pacha, Amnesia, El Divino and Space for Manumission’s Carry On.Morel had his first experience with turntables at the age of thirteen playing at neighborhood parties in his native New York. Later on, he became a regular at some of New York’s most notorious nightspots such as Red Zone, Palladium, Traxs and Save The Robots. These experiences led to his first production in 1989, with the late David Cole of C+C Music Factory, " Our Love Is Over" (featuring Dee Halloway) soon after in 1990, he produced and wrote ’Wiggle It" by 2 In A Room, which became an overnight global success, leading him to his first gold record. That same year, Morel began full-time collaboration with C+C Music Factory working on arrangements and edits for Mariah Carey, C+C Music Factory and Lisa Lisa. These partnerships led to four gold records, 3M tape award and one platinum record within two years.In 1992, Morel became the Vice President of A8R at Strictly Rhythm Records. At which time, he also took on the position of âIn-Houseâ Producer and Write for the label. During his seven years at Strictly Rhythm , he worked with producers and artist such as Mood 2 Swing, Felix Da House Cat, Erick Morrillo, Sandy Rivera (K.O.T.) , DJ Pierre, Roy Davis Jr., Barbara Tucker, CeCe Rogers, Roland Clark and Ultra Nate, as well as many other producers, recording artist to name and of-course his infamous releases Morelâs Groove Volumes creating his own style and sound ahead of time Morelâs hard work and dedication was celebrated with some additional several Billboard Music Awards, another gold record and the worldwide recognition success of the dance label Strictly Rhythm Records.Later in 1998, Morel took a step further by combining his musical experience and savvy business knowledge to form his company Groove On Productions and label Groove On Records. In addition to his productions Morel is also one of the voters for the Grammy remixed category. Morel also participated in several DJ tours and Parades worldwide including Carmel Air Rave which featured a chartered plane from Germany To Greece, making Morel the only DJ that has ever played on a plane; Reebok DJ Tour, Puskin Vodka DJ Tour, Ministry of Sound in Germany Tour, MTV DJ Tour, Coca Cola DJ-Culture Tour, Ritmo De Bacardi, eight consecutive years at the infamous Love Parade in Berlin, Rock In Rio (Brazil), Street Parade (Switzerland) and City Parade (Belgium). In addition, Morel continues to produce his highly successful CD mix compilations such as Casa Grande 2004 Mix CD, WMC 2004 8 2005, Groove, On’s Mix CD, George Morel in the Mix volume 1 thru 4 for More Music Germany, The Mix Le Queen In Paris for Polydor Records, Mega Mix for Strictly Rhythm, Zenith Ibiza for EMI and George Morel The Miami House Mix for UCMG Germany.Morelâs consistent strive and deep passion for music continues to be demonstrated through his work on productions, deejaying and his company Groove On Productions | 8/8/10 | Free | View In iTunes |
