ExplicitThe VCinema Show Episode 42: Goodbye, Dragon Inn | Remember back in 2011, during episodes 26 and 30, when we promised to round off our three-part Taiwanese New Wave Cinema series with a Tsai Ming-Liang episode? Well, only a year after those two episodes were released and we finally remembered too! In this episode, guest host Marc Saint-Cyr rejoins us as we look at Tsai's 2003 love letter to cinema, Goodbye Dragon Inn. CleanBonus Episode 10 - The Week Hong Sangsoo Arrives: The Third Day He Arrives | It's kind of odd that I'm guest blogging on my own blog, but here goes. For the third day of Adam Hartzell's one week series on Hong Sangsoo's The Day He Arrives here on VCinema (check out vcinemashow.com for more entries in this series), I dragged myself outside of my cave to an unusually sunny San Francisco to check out the film with Adam. We tried to enhance the experience with Korean food and beer on the lower Fillmore, but found out that doing so only leads to stunts like impromptu podcasting sessions. That's right, instead of text musings on the film, we bring to you listeners a bonus episode of spontaneous conversation about The Day He Arrives including first time impressions, pointed (not pointy) observations, all to the accompaniment of San Francisco's finest avant-garde kazoo players. ExplicitThe VCinema Show Episode 41: Project A | Yo ho, yo ho! A pirate's life for me! The VCinema is back from sailing the seven seas of Asian film to bring you a tale of a wee man from the Fragrant Harbor who kicked, punched, and threw himself off clock towers from precarious heights into the hearts of the world. That's right, this episode we talk about Jackie Chan and the film that essentially put him on the map, 1983's Project A. And we couldn't have a better person to captain our cinematic ship than special guest Ric Meyers! Ric is an author, actor, commentator, former columnist at Inside Kung Fu and Asian Cult Cinema magazines and was one of the first proponents of martial arts cinema in the West. Ric stopped by to talk about his latest projects, Films of Fury: The Kung Fu Movie Book and Films of Fury: The Kung Fu Movie Movie as well as For One Week Only: The World of Exploitation Films. Ric also regales our Project A review with plenty of interesting stories, tidbits, and reminisces. ExplicitBonus Episode 7: Interview with Johnny Nguyen and Veronica Ngo of Clash | Oh, woe is me that I missed almost the entire San Francisco International Asian-American Film Festival that happened from March 10th to the 20th, but friend of VCinema, Michael Guillen, was kind enough to donate an interview that he conducted with festival guests Johnny Nguyen and Veronica Ngo, stars of the 2009 Vietnamese action film Bay Rong, also known in the West as Clash. Johnny and Veronica were also in the wildly popular 2007 film The Rebel, directed by Johnny's brother Charlie Nguyen. ExplicitEpisode 26: Yi Yi | As we mentioned during our one year anniversary episodes, one of the goals of the VCinema podcast is to explore the cinema of Asia in regions that don't get as much exposure as they deserve. So, in this episode, we set sail away from the safe cinematic lands of Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong and into strange new territories and corny film exploration cliches. For our first stop, we touch down on the fertile land of Formosa a.k.a. Taiwan for our first of three forays into Taiwanese new cinema and discuss the film that is quite possibly the pinnacle of that movement, Edward Yang's Yi Yi (2000). Our Ponce de Leon for this episode is old VCinema friend Marc Saint-Cyr whose original wish to be "The Skipper" was turned down because, for sure. the Minnow would be lost. The Minnow would be lost. Also in this episode, we talk about the Borat of North Korea, Crayon Shin-Chan's contribution to cultural globalism, why we should (or shouldn't) be guilty for liking Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991), and a whole bunch of other movie stuff, ye scalywags. Customer Reviews
A well lthought out podcast
Coffin Jon and Josh put out a great show. What they lack in quantity and frequency of episodes they make up for in quality. The reviews are insightful and there is a lot of information given about the history of certain types of films or film makers. the interviews are great and help spread more light on to the subject matter of the film. Coffin Jon and Josh have a good chemistry and the show doesn't make one feel like they are just listening in on someones conversation, the show makes you feel like you are in the conversation.
Super stuff for cult film fans
Great cult and Asian film discussion from two movie guys that know their stuff. Jon & Josh are both witty hosts and intelligent film geeks that can wax on about everything from the significance of obscure cinema in terms of culture to silly yakuza inspired goofiness. Lots of interaction on Twitter, forums, voicemail, etc, plus well-done interviews with random figures from the industry. Good stuff that keeps getting better.
Informative and fun
This podcast is a must download if you are at all into Japanese (or any) cult film. Or any film for that matter. They do interviews that inform, reviews that interest and have great interaction with the audience via twitter and their blog. Seriously glad I found this 'cast out. I downloaded the episode on Public Enemy (mostly because I love Korean film) and then promptly downloaded the rest. Sure they might come every couple of weeks but the wait is worth it and if you are dying to get in on some Coffin Jon and Josh action just hop on twitter or check the blog out.
I subscribed. So should you.
