Podcast Description
This Week in Mormons is a lively, weekly podcast about Mormon news, culture, and doctrine. A great listen for Mormons and non-Mormons alike, we look at being Mormon from a humorous, sometimes irreverent (gasp!) perspective. *disclaimer* We are in no way an official production of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We are just some happy Mormon kids who enjoy talking about being Mormon.

Yep, Prop 8 got overturned on appeal. It’ll likely remain overturned on the next appeal. And then, depending on who is still alive on the Supreme Court by the time the case is heard, it will still likely remain overturned on that appeal. Yep, welcome to the new world order, friends. But how does this pertain to other hot button issues, like polygamy? What’s to stop polygamists from marrying if gays are given the same right? We discuss, and also wonder how on earth polygamist “marriages” are cracked down on by the law, when the state doesn’t recognize them in the first place (i.e. – Isn’t it really just one dude who has a harem?). Playa! We get into this discussion because TLC (not those of CrazySexyCool fame) now has a new reality show following a real polygamist family. AWESOME. Smooth! Listen for details on how to help. The Church has a new ad campaign that seeks to show viewers how Mormons are just like everybody else. We expand on this and debate whether a “big tent” theory (all-inclusive; we’re just like you) or a more contrasting (we’re different, and that’s ok. There’s a reason why we’re special) approach is better when it comes to Church PR and missionary work. Both have their merits, but what will help best close the gap when it comes to the public’s perception of the LDS Church? Also, keeping that in mind – Mormons and politics. What’s the right balance between being a proud member of the Church and trying to not freak one’s would-be constituents out with too much Mormonness? We’re tired of people using mobile phones during church meetings. Seriously, unless you are actually somehow doing positive work for the Church (as Geoff illustrates), put the thing away and remember the reason you allegedly came to church – to learn and feel the spirit. Retention is an issue that has faced and always will face the Church. What’s the best way to retain members? It doesn’t appear that getting people to commit to baptism is the problem; it’s a ward’s inability to properly look after those who have genuine testimonies. A blogger offers up some worthy suggestions and areas for improvement, and while the blog surely doesn’t cover all the bases, it’s definitely a start, and that’s needed nowadays. We can’t be complacent with our converts. Have you ever wanted to pay your tithing online? Now you can. Stay tuned. Stetson Geo Hallam: You are a fool, but we really do love to make fun of you. Creepy as sin! Tasing your home teachee and then handcuffing her, all in the name of April Fools Day? We’ve gone over this before, but ol’ Stetson has no pleaded guilty to his foibles. Pointless? Undoubtedly. But Mormons have some pretty amazing urban legends, so it’s always worth a discussion. SB1070 goes into effect in Arizona, and the Church has been under pressure from both sides to take a firmer, more explicit stance on immigration. As one might expect, the statement released by the Church doesn’t tow any particular line, but it does call for civil discourse and pragmatism. We hash it out! This weekend also marks the anniversary of Missouri officially apologizing for the extermination order put out against the Saints in the 1800s. What ostensibly started as smug satire actually turned out to be one of the most interesting and humbling experiences in recent memory. The new mormon.org is an impressive effort by the Church to change the site from a controlled information source into a more open, user content-driven sort of LDS community. There are potential drawbacks to this, of course, but the new site is promising. Also, coupled with the launch of the new mormon.org is a story about online missionary efforts and how much the Church has invested in cyber proselytizing in recent years. BYU’s Honor Code is called into question because of its dealing with homosexual students at the university. How is it that an administrative body at BYU somehow trumps an LDS bishop in terms of judging one’s worthiness to attend BYU? In keeping with this week’s gay-fest, we look at the Church’s involvement (or lack thereof) regarding pending legislation to legalize gay marriage in Argentina. Why does the Church jump into the fray head first in California, but does little more than having “reminder” letters from the First Presidency read over the pulpit in other areas or countries? Is the sanctity of marriage more or less important in different places? We discuss. Also, the weird Mormon pageant season is upon us! Love it!
Finally a casual Mormon podcast! Love the show! Keep it up!
Hilarity
Geoff is an old friend of mine, but that's only why I started listening, not why I continue to do so. Not only is this informative but it's hilarious & incredibly entertaining. Cheers G & Al!
Insightful anf Funny, Yet Real
There aren't many humor-based Mormon podcasts out there. This Week in Mormons deftly balances sincere insight and discussion with absurdist humor. You can tell the two hosts are good friends who never run out of things to talk about with each other. Don't listen to this if you are easily offended or don't see the humor involved in being a part of the Mormon community.
This is a great show. I highly recommend it. It makes me proud to be Mormon to listen to two active, well-meaning members of the Church have a laugh about that which merits laughter, but have no problem being real when needs be.
Besides, the Zarahemla Times bits are hilarious!
