Southland: Ben McKenzie Audio Interview about the TNT Series and The OC’s Last Episode | Actor Ben McKenzie became known to most TV viewers via FOX's The OC. That series ran for four seasons and was cancelled a couple years ago. Currently, he's playing one of the main characters on the Southland TV show which is about a group of cops working on the tough streets of Los Angeles. Southland ran on NBC last season for seven episodes to mixed ratings. The peacock network renewed the show but, having decided to run The Jay Leno Show five nights a week at 10pm, NBC execs subsequently felt that they didn't have an appropriate place for it on the schedule and cancelled Southland before its second season began airing. Production of season two was shut down after six episodes. Fortunately, TNT picked up the show and made a deal to run last years episodes as well as the six second season installments. The new episodes debut on March 2nd on TNT. The cable channel is open to going back into production on the series but hasn't made a decision yet because they want to see how the new episodes perform. In the interview, McKenzie talks about what attracted him to the Southland series, the cancellation, if the final episode could serve as a series finale. He also shares his thoughts on the end of The OC. Note: Ben's audio is a little low in the early part of the discussion so you might want to turn up your volume a bit. Soap: Audio Interview with Ventriloquist Jay Johnson (Chuck & Bob), Part One | Jay Johnson has been a ventriloquist for most of his life and even had a local television show while he was still in high school. He's appeared on dozens of TV shows including CSI, Empty Nest, That '70s Show, and The Facts of Life. In 2007, he won a Tony Award for his one man (and many characters) show, The Two and Only, following a successful run on Broadway. Still, Johnson will likely always be best known for his role on the landmark 1977 sitcom, Soap. Soap follows the lives and families of two sisters, Jessica Tate (Katherine Helmond) and Mary Campbell (Cathryn Damon). Jessica and Mary are quite close while their families can't stand each other -- the Tates are wealthy while the Campbells are not. One of the most unique characters on the series is ventriloquist Chuck Campbell (Johnson), the biological son of Burt Campbell (Richard Mulligan), Mary's husband. Chuck's a nice quiet guy but he believes that Bob, his rude wooden puppet, is real and the two insist that he be treated that way. Though they all know better, just about every member of the family gets sucked into the fantasy at one time or another. Chuck and Bob have some of the funniest moments in the series and are two of the show's most popular characters. This is the first part of an interview with the talented Johnson. We discuss his early career, how he landed the role on Soap, the controversy surrounding the show, and a lot of great anecdotes about working with the rest of the extraordinary cast. To listen, click the player icon or right click here to download the audio file to your computer. (If you're new to the world of podcasts, you can click here for more information about how to subscribe -- it's under "RSS Feeds.") [display_podcast] Part two of the Jay Johnson interview is available here. To learn more about Johnson and to see videos of his one man/many character show, visit his website. If you haven't seen Soap (rent or buy it now!) or would just like to refresh your memory, here are a couple of fun videos. The introduction of Chuck and Bob (Jay Johnson). TV Series Finale News: Interview with The War at Home’s Bill Kunstler | This edition of the podcast is part of the Adopt a Writer project in which various TV websites have the opportunity to interview members of the Writers Guild and get their perspective on their work and the current writers strike. Bill Kunstler has written for many television series over the past 13 years. After working on The Jeff Foxworthy Show, he spent a season on Murphy Brown, the hugely popular TV newsroom sitcom of the 1990s that stars Candice Bergen. From there, he went on to numerous short-lived shows like Inside Schwartz, DAG, Quintuplets, Oh Baby -- working with talented performers like David Allen Grier, Andy Richtor, Delta Burke, Charlie Finn, and Christopher Rich. Bill recently spent over a year on the FOX sitcom The War at Home which stars Michael Rapaport as an outspoken and prejudiced husband and father of three teens. On first glance, the series might appear to be just a crass FOX sitcom but, the series actually tackled some tough issues in a wonderfully astute and sensitive way. Despite a loyal core audience, the show was cancelled in 2007. The series finale ends with eldest child Hillary having finally graduated high school. Her parents, Dave and Vicky are celebrating until they realize Vicky's pregnant with another child. In this interview, Bill talks about working on Murphy Brown, the challenges of working with cancellation-crazy networks, the "lost" episode of The War at Home, the episode in which Larry's best friend Kenny (Rami Malek) comes out of the closet, the end of the sitcom, and what the third season might have held for the characters. We also discuss the current writers strike -- how it's affected him personally, why it's so important, and what he's doing to help his fellow writers in his work with United Artists (headed by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner). Tune in! To listen, click the icon below or click here to download the audio file to your computer. TV Series Finale News: Suzanne Pleshette Receives Hollywood Walk of Fame Star | On May 21, 1990, a popular CBS sitcom, Newhart, ended its eight season run and made television series history. Overnight, the episode became legendary and the most popular series finale of all time (at least at the time). As Bob Newhart awoke next to his former TV wife Suzanne Pleshette, we learned that the eight seasons had just been a bad dream of his character from The Bob Newhart Show. For this reason, we're devoting this episode of the podcast to Suzanne Pleshette. The beautiful and outspoken actress passed away on January 19, 2008 after a long battle with lung cancer. She was scheduled to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today, on what would have been her 71st birthday. Her friends and family were hoping that she would be able to hold on and be able to attend the ceremony but it wasn't to be. In her honor, the unveiling went on as scheduled. Many stars of classic TV were in attendance and several of her close friends spoke; Marcia Wallace, Arte Johnson (Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In), Bob Newhart, and Tina Sinatra. If you look closely at the picture, you can see a tiny red garter that was placed on the star by Sinatra, in honor of her bawdy friend and the star's location in front of Frederick's of Hollywood. We're pleased to bring the audio of this event to you. To listen, click the audio player icon below, use the player in the sidebar at left, or click here to download the audio file to your computer. To listen, click on the sound button below or click here to download the MP3 audio file to your computer. Be sure to stay tuned for future episodes! If you're new to the world of podcasts, there's a great explanation from Wikipedia. If you want to receive future episodes automatically, you'll need a podcast client or podcatcher. Use this address for others http://tvseriesfinale.com/podcasts/rss/. You will then be subscribed to these podcasts and will receive them as they become available, FREE! You can learn more by clicking the link in the left column of this page. Here's some Interesting Charmed trivia for fans of the Halliwell sisters. Several of the actors on Charmed are veterans of other Aaron Spelling shows. Dorian Gregory (Officer Darryl Morris) appeared on Beverly Hills, 90210 which starred Shannon Doherty for several seasons. Alyssa Milano starred on Melrose Place. In the original Charmed series pilot, Phoebe was played by actress Lori Rom who went on to recurring roles on Party of Five, Providence and Jack & Jill). Lori was replaced by Alyssa Milano and the Phoebe scenes were re-shot to include Alyssa. In the first episode, there's a newspaper that says, "Police Doubt Fire Was Accidental." This paper was also used as a prop in the movie Mrs. Doubtfire. That movie starred Robin Williams and also took place in San Francisco. In the movie, Robin Williams' character used the second and third word of the headline to invent the title character's name. Each of the Halliwell sisters died several times during the series. Prue died three times, Piper died nine times, Phoebe died seven times and Paige died six times. All returned to life with the exception of Prue when Shannon Doherty left the show. Holly Marie Combs & Alyssa Milano are the only actors to appear in every episode of the series. If you count the unaired pilot, Holly Marie Combs alone holds that distinction. Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, Brian Krause (Leo) and Jennifer Rhodes (Grams) are the only actors to appear in every season of the series. As predicted in the season three episode entitled "All Halliwell's Eve," the first name of Phoebe's true love begins with a "C" -- Coop (or was it truly Cole?). The scene at the end of the next-to-last episode when the Manor is blown up was actually the last scene of the series ever shot. The final shot of the series of the Manor doors closing is the same shot used in the season 4 episode "Witch Way Now?". The reduced season eight budget prevented new scenes from being shot on location for the final season. | 8/3/06 | Free | View In iTunes |
