2012-05-13: Our struggle is not against flesh and blood | Our struggle is not against flesh and blood: Finally the first group of exiles head back to the promised land, but they encounter rough opposition. Daniel is once again on his knees in prayer when another angelic messenger comes to him. The curtain is lifted, so to speak, and a brief glimpse of the heavenly/spiritual conflict is revealed. God is fighting for His people. The revelation is essential for the coming vision which details massive conflict on the earth: we must know that the battles on the earth are a shadow in comparison to what takes place in the heavens. What part in the heavenly conflict did Daniel play? Prayer. We too are divinely equipped and called to take part in the war. by Jeff Wagner Text: Daniel Ch10 Scripture Reading: Ephesians Ch6:10-20 | 5/13/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-05-06: The Coming Messiah | The Coming Messiah: This prophecy is given in response to Daniel’s prayer: “O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and take action! For Thine own sake, O God, do not delay, because Thy city and Thy people are called by Thy name.” Daniel is looking for a return to the land of promise and has been confessing his sin and the sin of Israel; and the prophecy looks forward to the coming of Jesus as the Messiah and the finishing of transgression, and end to sin, atonement for iniquity, the bringing in of everlasting righteousness, a sealing up of vision and prophecy, and the anointing of the most holy place. It tells of the restoration of Jerusalem and a rebuilding of the city. And then the Messiah is cut off and there is war and desolation. God takes action and his answer is the Messiah! by Jeff Wagner Text: Daniel Ch9:20-27 Scripture Reading: Jeremiah 31:27-40 (backup recorder, lower quality audio) | 5/6/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-04-15: Daniel Ch8 | Daniel Ch8: Prophecy is God revealing himself to mankind: God making Himself, His ways, known to His creation. When God makes known to us the future, what is He revealing about Himself? That He alone is God; that He alone defines truth; and that He alone has the power to bring His will to fruition. This truth is bedrock for our knowing God and walking in relationship with Him. This prophecy from Daniel 8 reads like a story for us because it is history, even while at the time Daniel wrote it is was yet to happen, and even while a great body of God’s people who would read it would also live through parts of it. There is no one like God! by Jeff Wagner Text: Daniel Ch8 Scripture Reading: Psalm 19 (backup recorder, lower quality audio) | 4/15/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-04-08: Easter – No Fear | Easter – No Fear: Fear comes in all different sizes, causes us to think and act in ways that do not honor God and hurt other people, and is debilitating to our Christian life and joy. According to Mark’s account, the only mention of the eleven disciples after Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane was Peter, and he denied knowing Jesus. The only ones willing to go to the tomb were the two Mary’s and even they fled the scene unwilling to tell anyone what they had seen. All their hope had been destroyed. The resurrection buries fear. Because Christ was raised our faith is not useless and we are not dead in our sins. With this as the foundation our hope springs out and we are able to love others without fear, able to honor God by spreading the gospel (which has the resurrection of Christ at its center), and enter into the joy that is the new life in Christ. by Jeff Wagner Text: Mark 16 Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 15:1-28/50-58 | 4/8/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-04-01: Palm Sunday – Hosanna! Lord Save Us | Palm Sunday - Hosanna! Lord Save Us: What is the crowd singing as they make their way up to Jerusalem, following along with Jesus? What is Jesus doing as He makes His way to Jerusalem riding on a donkey? What is really happening and what does it all mean: Lord save us, Lord send prosperity. by Jeff Wagner Text: Mark 11:1-10 Scripture Reading: Psalm 118 | 4/1/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-03-25: The Saints of the Highest One | The Saints of the Highest One: The eleventh horn becomes the focus of Daniel’s vision and all attention is drawn down to it and it seems so very powerful. That is when we read with a great sigh of relief, “Until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was passed in favor of the saints of the Highest One…” The saints enter the picture and the struggle between the saints and the horn becomes the focus, but in the end the saints overcome according to the judgment of the Ancient of Days. The separation between the beastly kingdom and the saints is clear both in the persecution and the final outcome. Jesus spoke of tribulation and persecution for those who follow Him and he also gave us a firm foundation for our hope amidst the struggle. by Jeff Wagner Text: Daniel 7 Scripture Reading: Hebrews 12 Encounter: Amy Helmericks / Nate Vonnahme song. | 3/25/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-03-18: The Son of Man vs. the Beasts | The Son of Man vs. the Beasts: The contrast between the four beastly kingdoms of men and the kingdom of the Most High is the centerpiece of Daniel’s vision. Each beast is not a true animal but has animal parts and each beast also has some human characteristic blended in. It makes for a monster that stands against the created order. Yet the Ancient of Days is recognizable to us and the Son of Man, by his very title, shines out as all that man should be according to the divine order. The contest between the two (the beastly kingdoms and the everlasting kingdom) is fixed and based on the judgment of the Most High. The kingdom of the Most High goes on into eternity and the beastly kingdoms are annihilated and destroyed. by Jeff Wagner Text: Daniel 7 Scripture Reading: Daniel 7 / Psalm 34:1-3 | 3/18/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-03-11: The Living God Delivers | The Living God Delivers: “Has your God whom you constantly serve been able to deliver you?” This is the great question of the story and, being familiar with the story, we know the answer: completely. There are two parts to the deliverance: from the lions in the pit and from the enemies who sought his life. Does Daniel deserve to be delivered? The story has a complimentary theme running through it: Divine Justice. Daniel is a great servant of the empire and yet his service is to be rewarded by death? The king’s law steps outside its authority, yet God gives His judgment and it stands; He closes the mouths of the lions. Do we deserve to be delivered? Not on our own merit, but because we are in Christ, washed in his blood, God has handed down his judgment: we are righteous. He will save us just as surely as he saved Daniel. by Jeff Wagner Text: Daniel Ch6 Scripture Reading: Colossians 1:9-23 | 3/11/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-03-04: A Witness that Counts | A Witness that Counts: Living the life of an exile is a strong theme that runs through the entire first half of the book. Persecution for what one believes is an element in each of the stories, although it is blatant in the second and last. Daniel is persecuted for what he was doing, not for what he was refraining from doing. The other officials were jealous of his success but could find no chink in his sterling character. But Daniel’s sterling character was not godly character all by itself and doing a top notch job is not godly character by itself either. The only place the officials could attack him was in his relationship to God; his prayer life. As foreigners in this world and children of the Living God, would there be enough “dirt” on us to get us thrown into the Lion’s Den? by Jeff Wagner Text: Daniel 6 Scripture Reading: John 15:1-17 | 3/4/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-02-26: The Wisdom of God | The Wisdom of God: When men ignore the wisdom of God calamity follows. The items of worship from the temple of the Most High God play an important role in the story; they provide continuity from the very beginning of God working with Babylon all the way through the end. They are brought to Babylon to prove the superiority of Babylon over God and appear to fall into obscurity, yet at the end of Babylonian sovereignty they are brought out again to make the same boast, and yet they prove the opposite; they remain and Babylon vanishes in a night. The handwriting on the wall is a reminder of the absolute nature of God’s wisdom and truth and is itself the very wisdom of God penned in His own hand. Daniel has ever been the wisdom of God spoken to the Babylonians throughout the generations. But it is all ignored even as the feast is an attempt to ignore the fact that the city is under siege. Babylon falls and Daniel survives. Jesus Christ is the wisdom of God and every nation, every people, every language, every individual who ignores Him will be weighed by God and found wanting. by Jeff Wagner Text: Daniel 5 Scripture Reading: Isaiah 46 | 2/26/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-02-19: Raise Your Eyes to Heaven 2 | Raise Your Eyes to Heaven 2: What happened to Nebuchadnezzar? He goes from a self absorbed man to a beast of the field and back to a man, but he is not longer the same man. A radical transformation has taken place. The dream was from God, the interpretation of the dream was from God, the “curse” was from God, and his restoration was from God. Before it all began he knew a great deal about God, but he had not come to know God. He had been humbled and had learned that God rules, not just as a piece of knowledge, but as a condition of his heart. We too must be humbled by the hand of God in order to accept the truth of the cross of Christ, not as a piece of knowledge, but as a condition of the heart. “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, that no one should boast.” by Jeff Wagner Text: Daniel Ch4 Scripture Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:18-31 | 2/19/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-01-22: The Great Image does not compare to the Greater Mountain | The Great Image does not compare to the Greater Mountain: The dream is given to Nebuchadnezzar by God and its interpretation is given to Nebuchadnezzar by God. What was he, the greatest of kings, to learn? That no matter how great his kingdom now appeared, it would be destroyed by the stone not cut by human hands. There is no question from the interpretation that Nebuchadnezzar was the head of gold; there is great question and speculation about the other three kingdoms; there is no question that the stone not cut by human hands that becomes a mountain is greater than the total of the image (all the other kingdoms); so much greater as the God made mountain is to the human made statue. There is no question that this mountain is the kingdom of God and no question that the king of this kingdom is Jesus. Then what are we to learn? Cooperation without compromise: purpose in our hearts to serve the King. by Jeff Wagner Text: Daniel 2:27-49 Scripture Reading: Psalm 97 Encounter: Jim Harris – Update on Bible verses and praying for the nation | 1/22/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-01-15: God Exalts the Humble | God Exalts the Humble: The king’s dream renders the king helpless and the wise men speechless. There is a contrast between Daniel’s response to the crisis and the king and his wise men’s response. When Daniel hears of his coming death he too is helpless but knows the One to whom he can turn. The four young men pray to the God of heaven, the God of compassion, who alone can reveal the king’s dream and its interpretation. Many view prayer as an act of desperation; prayer is an act of faith. And in this act of the story the humility of Daniel is remarkable: it is present in his approach to God, present in his praise to God, and present when he speaks God’s word to the king. by Jeff Wagner Text: Daniel 2:17-30, 46-49 Scripture Reading: Job 40:6-24 & 42:1-6 | 1/15/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-1-8: God Rules Kings | God Rules Kings: The king has a dream and it threatens to destabilize his whole world and, subsequently, the entire kingdom. He is supposed to be the greatest of kings, with immense power and authority over everyone and everything in his kingdom (and indeed he is), yet a simple dream controls him. All the wise men of his kingdom, which amounts to the wisest men of the known world, are unable to provide answers and are under condemnation for their lack. There is not power on the earth able to overcome the dream. If kings with all their wealth and power and resources galore can not even control their own dreams, are made little and common by them, what does that tell us about our desperate need of the almighty God? by Jeff Wagner Text: Daniel 2:1-49 (focus 1-16) Scripture Reading: Psalm 2 | 1/8/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

2012-1-1: Cooperation Without Compromise | Cooperation Without Compromise: The sovereignty of God rings out loud and clear in the opening of Daniel: verse 2 reads “And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his [Nebuchadnezzar]”; verse 9 reads “Now God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officials”; verse 17 reads “and as for these four youths, God gave them intelligence …” We get a picture of the faith of these four young men as they determine to live in and under the circumstances that God has placed them. The refuse to compromise God’s commandments—faith in action—and God works out the details according to His purposes. by Jeff Wagner Text: Daniel Ch1:1-21 Scripture Reading: Psalm 19 Encounter: Jim Harris encouraging Bible reading and picking a verse to meditate on for the year. | 1/1/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
