URB Presents: Jon Convex | Today's entry in our podcast series comes from one of the most lauded producers at the moment, Jon Convex. URB Presents: Lazer Sword | Things have come a long way for the duo of Lando Kal and Low Limit, known collectively as Lazer Sword. Since initially making their stamp on the electronic music world with tracks like "Gucci Sweatshirt" and "Batman", the duo shifted from their focus on abstract beats as the years went on. It wasn't until the duo worked together on their EP for Glaswegian imprint Numbers when they caught a foothold in Europe. Already armed with a killer live show, the duo was in a good place. Things changed, as Lando Kal moved to Berlin and took his own productions to a more techno and rave-oriented directions, and Low Limit continued to hone his craft back in California. The goal of a group effort never strayed far, as they were signed to Modeselektor's Monkeytown label and within the past few weeks, have garned some fantastic praise for their album, Memory. Truly an auditory spectrum of what they love and labor for, Memory is certaintly a fantastic piece of inventive and igniting electronic glory. With their forthcoming U.S. tour upon us, Lazer Sword have kindly given URB a mix of their current favorites at the moment. With James Pants, Shed and Model 500 on the tracklist, it seems like being all over the place is the only place to be. Check out the tracklist and mix after the jump. URB Presents: Barker | Today's podcast comes from Leisure System resident and busy-as-hell badman Barker. Making tracks since he was 13, Barker has been around electronics for years and truly adheres to the methods and madness of a wide spectrum of frequencies. Whether that be playing for the massive event institution/burgeoning label Leisure System, or putting out tracks on Ostgut Ton with fellow producer nd_baumecker (under their Barker & Baumecker moniker), his mind and vibes are in the right place. With his debut solo release on Leisure System released earlier this week, we invited Barker to contribute his tastes and sonic sensibilities to URB's podcast series; and he didn't disappoint. URB Presents: Octo Octa | This week's entry in our podcast comes from the now-New York-based producer Octo Octa. After a string of releases that were self-released or on his current home 100% Silk, the often-vibey and quiet dance maven came out to a wave of positive vibes with his full-length Rough, Rugged, And Raw. Full of odes to old-school, cut-up, diva house, he implemented a level of brevity in the dancefloor community that was open to all strands of listeners, including vogue queens, punks and the academic crowd. Seeing Octo Octa live is another deal entirely; as his performances are usually full of vigor and insatiable energy from start to finish. Already making noise with upcoming releases in 2012 (on 100% Silk), he contributes a wonderously awesome mix for our podcast series. URB Presents: Traxman (Mix + Interview) | Today's podcast comes from the man who's made Planet Mu's best album centralizing in "footwork". Corky Strong, better known as Traxman, is a Chicago dance veteran that has seen the shift in musical culture go from 125BPM house music to 135BPM ghetto house to 160BPM juke and footwork. His LP, entitlred Da Mind Of Traxman, is a visceral journey between bustling and emotive samples, indelible rhythms and pounding bass. Surely, it's the cementing piece in Planet Mu's fascination with the sound, and we're lucky to have the man contribute a quick mix to URB's podcast series. That, and a bit of an interview to accompany. Check the mix and interview after the jump. URB: Tell us about your origins in Chicago electronic music. TRAXMAN: I have to give props to my uncle and my mom, played me stuff like The O’Jays, The Tempations and my Pops played Led Zeppelin, Bob Marley, Miles Davis and Tito Puente. But electronic stuff I was really into, like Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode. Then there’s stuff like Sun-Ra too. I don’t like saying I do stuff in footwork, because footwork is a generalisation, it’s been around forever! URB: It seems like because of your extensive time in the scene, your sound is more well-rounded. What’s your opinion on the evolution of the Chicago sound? T: It’s kind of a gift and a curse here. I’ve had the blessing of not being stuck in the times because while Chicago is a beautiful city of artists, producers, DJs and people. But there’s politics in music and that doesn’t work, of course our heroes from the ‘80s-’90s, WBMX was like school to DJing, we were glued because there was a radio station that would play classics from people like Farley, Jesse Laurence, and such. When it shut down, there was the beginning of techno here for us in ‘90/’91. There was another station also called WB96 that we tuned into as well. Cajmere and Steve Pointdexter changed the game. Back in the day, there was a club called The Factory, where I met Jammin’ Gerald, I’ll call him the architect of ghetto house. I try and teach the younger generation; I always talk about the music, we have to give it up to the previous generation. Some guys want to be hard-headed and some really want to learn. Ghetto house saved house music in Chicago, it saved the house sound because the overall genre got over-polished, oversaturated and it wasn’t fun. When all the ghetto hits came out to the ‘hood, it got attention and got edgier. I was making tracks at the time and started meeting all these people. Somehow, I ended up in Paul Johnson’s kitchen, and he’s such a diehard. I was rubbing elbows with the owner of Dancemania, and with that I met Deeon, Slugo, Milton and so many artists that recorded on that label. People would come to me to vouch for tracks people weren’t sure about it. URB: What do you think is your role in the world of Chicago producers right now and how has it affected your musical style? T: We all created something and contributing something to the culture. DJ Rashad and myself are heading this thing, with Earl, Manny, Clent, RP Boo and some more. Rashad attacks tracks, Spinn smoothes ‘em up and I try and do that all and more in my own music. My love for subtle sounds help out as well. You gotta listen to things from front to back, that’s why the album is made the way that it is. People don’t understand that I’ve been making this music from one to five years back. “Footworking On Air” is a track I had in my head for three years, because I knew how I wanted to do it. I could listen to a record a thousand times and I know how to work it, that’s why I chop up samples the way I do. I look for lost sounds or forgotten samples, look for something that you can hear out of the box. URB: Is there a track on the album that you hope that people can immediately grasp the history, the sound and the wealth of musical standards that you’ve attained? T: “Footworking On Air”, it’s somethi | 4/17/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

URB Presents: Jimmy Edgar [Interview + Mix] | There's certain artists that capture an essence that's wholly stimulating to a dancefloor; Jimmy Edgar is one of those artists that provides a combination of intellectual and auditory stimulation. Since the days of his releases on WARP and Merck, the now-Berlin-based producer has been pounding out his own brand of interstital and sensual grooves, attracting crowds that are hungry for next-level jaunts about the unknown realms of their strangest desires. Edgar is a master at accessing a dancefloor's core values and cascading his sound with a confidence that's truly his own. Currently, his single on Hotflush, "This One's For The Children" is an retro-futuristic take on 80s electro, draped in velvet and spacesuits. Yeah, it's that good. It's only a teaser for his forthcoming LP on the label, entitled Majenta (out in early May). Jimmy took the time to speak to URB about how his creative process has thrived due to his move to Berlin, as well as providing us with a mix that's a throwback response to his good buddy Machinedrum's URB podcast. Check out the interview and mix after the jump. URB: How has Jimmy Edgar changed sonically since Color Strip and when did you see the evolution take the next step towards your forthcoming Hotflush LP? JIMMY EDGAR: It;s become a lot more of a raw and smooth interaction, the relationship between me and my music. I’m digging deeper and exposing something personal. URB: Has your current climate changed you sonically? JE: Definitely more dance-influenced, more "Berlin". The term “minimal “changed for me a lot, and it has nothing to do with minimal techno. I believe the people who live in Berlin would probably understand what I mean. The chaotic environment inspired me to take meditation more seriously a few years ago. URB: Majenta certainly captures the essence of funk, electro and house in a near-euphoric sensibility from start to finish. Was your intention to create an experience that enriching from the start? JE: No , it just happened naturally; but I suppose I'm always striving for some continuity. My focus was cosmic and more spiritual physics ideas. A lot was on my mind, not just a change in myself, but big changes of the world and its even inspired me a lot more after the album has finished. URB: Three words to describe the album to someone who's never heard your music. JE: Ultra Color Spectrum URB: What's your preference: Live or DJ sets? Why? JE: I like both equally to be honest. The new Majenta lvieshow is really an exploration of me into LED synchronization technology which is constantly improving..but DJ sets are fun for me to hold a dancefloor and improvise a set of my favorite music. URB: Finally, this mix is a throwback, a response mix for a Machinedrum podcast that we've kept hidden for the right time, figured it was high time to bring it out. Tell us about this mix. JE: Oh! *laughs* That one! That’s exactly what its for. I made the mix months ago so whatever, enjoy it all with love. | 4/4/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

URB Presents: CHLLNGR | The darkness of dub and melancholy aversions of RnB meet in the sounds of CHLLNGR. Steven Jess Borth II has been crafting his eerie and exhaustive sound for quite some time now, with his LP Haven coming out last year to critical acclaim from fans inside and outside the worlds of electronic music. He's not always alone with his sounds however as he's ammassed remixes for M.I.A., The xx and has worked with acts like Cubic Zirconia, Spoek Mathombo and Teachers. Throughout it all, CHLLNGR has "challenged" (pun intended) the status quo with his attention to atmosphere, struggling to place us in a zone of comfort and relishing our every moment of saddened shuddering. With that said, we thought he would bring a new light to our URB podcast series, which he agreed to and gave us the mix you're about to listen to down below. Check out the mix and tracklist after the jump; and be sure to check out his new release Datter, available now. URB Presents: Ital (Mix + Interview) | What a year it's been for Daniel Martin-McCormick, better know as the mind-warping producer, Ital. His sounds, informed by the sensibilites of disco, gospel and house, are not necessarily tied to one sort of "genre". In fact, Ital's audible identity is one that covers a world of dance music that might not even be occupied wholly by electronic music fans entirely. His releases on 100% Silk and Planet Mu expand from twisted dance epics to genre-defying amalgams, crossing borders without any regard to who's listening. What's most important with Ital's music is the vibe; it's reliant on mood, melody and energy, something that no matter what kind of music fan you are, you can appreciate in its entirety. To commemorate the release of Hive Mind of Planet Mu, Ital has graced URB with an exclusive mix of tunes he's bought on-tour. In addition to that, he's given us a lengthy interview to accompany it. Check out the mix, tracklist and chat after the jump. URB: How did the music thing come about? ITAL: I grew up with my parents listening to music, but around ninth grade I was researching rock music for this school project. I found out about punk and pretty quickly, I found out about early hardcore thanks to Henry Rollins book “Get In The Van”, I’d leave school and go read it everyday. It made me want to play music immediately. After getting into punk and learning some guitar, I wanted to start a band. All-ages show were kind of a must in D.C., and when I went out I immediately met the people I’d be jamming with in the near-future. I started playing in a few bands and around 2001, myself and a few others started this group Black Eyes, it was the first time anything was gonna be perceived as serious and goal-oriented; not just dicking around, we would write stuff we’d actually want to hear. We had two drummers, two bassists, extra percussion, pushing stuff way outside of punk in the end. At the end of that group, I wanted to learn how to actually play music, like learn properly about scales, chords and melodies. I started learning classical guitar and coincidentally started listening to dance music at the time. Like proper dance music; some great disco, house and techno. In 2006, I started making tracks, met Damon from Mi Ami and figured to become a live sort of project. So we started a rock band, but still focused around dance music. But around 2010, I figured I should make dance tracks on my own and work from there. URB: So when did you make the transition from Mi Ami to Ital and why? ITAL: When Mi Ami started in 2006, I had Ital-esque tracks to work on but they didn’t work with us in a live sort-of manner. So I shelved them, and around 2010, I began figuring to start making dance music again. With the experience of the band stuff, I just kept making it in a cut-and-paste style. We were touring and I was making tracks on the side. This past year, I moved to NYC and Mi Ami was split up, and I just needed something to do. It naturally became a focus because I was sitting at home and not wanting to be bored. I started playing live shows and it just continued on and on. URB: When ITAL finally began taking steam, what brought you to a label like 100% Silk? ITAL: I brought them to 100% Silk first, before I really brought stuff up to the forefront. Amanda asked me about finding people for the label after she was doing Not Not Fun, I had tracks and I just sent them to her. I didn’t expect the label or myself to get that much attention, but it caused a stir with what people were happy and not happy about. It seems like the label’s strength is also their weakness; the people who make these tracks are not really your typical DJ-types, so the results come from this sort of fresh perspective that can be new or left-field, which can lead people to perceive it as naive. It’s really interesting when I meet people who are into the Silk vibe, I have to ask if they’re into other, UK or European new stuff. As much as I | 3/6/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

URB Presents: Sinjin Hawke | Today's contribution to URB's podcast series comes from MTL/BCN producer Sinjin Hawke, who you may know from his R&B/hip-hop bootleg specialities (available from TRUANTS for free). Considering his penchant for big-room bass drops and euphoric sensibilities, he's been buzzed about for good reason. Citing influences from obvious hip-hop/R&B and bass producers, (DJ Khaled, HudMo, Rustie, etc.), his Pelican Fly release (The Lights) was met with huge praise for his signature productions, oozing with vigorous swag. Already on a roll in 2012, his year's surely going to get more busy, with releases coming in the near future. Perhaps there's some previews of upcoming stuff in this mix he's done so graciously for URB. Check out the mix and tracklist after the jump; and most importantly, enjoy. URB Presents: Tin Man "Winter Classic" | Johannes Auvinen is a man of impeccable intrigue; under the guise of Tin Man, he has explored the intrinsic world of acid house, turning it on its head with a multitude of releases dedicated to the sub-genre. Whilst Auvinen presented his own singular take on the world of dancefloor otherworldliness, he had another part of him calling. Enter his latest full-length endeavor, Vienna Blue, a romantic homage to Vienna trickled with warmth, ambience and sonicly intimate appreciation. While bending the lines between ambient, classical and dance music, Tin Man is constantly at work, with a new album in May focusing on his love of acid, once again. Along with that, he is releasing another house-oriented 12" on Shaddock, entitled "S_MPL_HOUSE". In the meantime, Auvinen took the time to craft an endearing mix for URB's podcast series, as well as took the time to answer some questions. Check out the interview after the jump. URB: ACID. Previously, that was your realm of mastery; why was the journey through that specific sound so important to you? TIN MAN: Love. Acid, first of all, was an obsession for me. I was captivated by the hypnotic groove. So, I collected many records and eventually decided I wanted to try to make some myself. Ten years later, I realized I could make a unique contribution to the greater field of acid with my style of long twisting melodic tripping Acid. I still really just love it. URB: Moving forward, classical and ambient influences seem to hover over your sounds; what brings you to explore the expansiveness of these sounds rather than something somewhat dance-oriented? TM: External influences always play a role in the formation of ideas for records. On my first record, Places, watching Tarkovsky films and reading Jorge Borges suggested I imagine an ambient landscape to make a connection between those muses and my reality or to transpose those muses onto my reality. The main circumstance directing Vienna Blue is having moved here to Vienna five years ago, and trying to tell a story of this place and moment in a romantic light. In terms of instrumentation, I was influenced by working with a trio playing music at the Austrian Pavillion at Expo in Shanghai for three months. In terms of writing, Gonzales' Solo Piano work was influential in that it reminded me of a certain romantic era and also worked for me as a "winter" record. I terms of sounds, the work of Christian Fennesz and his use of physical modeling synthesis and more brittle sounds was an influence. If I had to choose a book and movie, I would say Fitzgerald's "Tender is The Night" and Visconti's "Death in Venice". I took off my dance cap for this record. URB: There are some vocal bits on this album, which are touching on your love for Vienna. What made Vienna so important to the creation of this album? TM: Vienna Blue is a fantasy record. It’s me as a visitor conjuring fantastical, romantic, and even touristic ideas of a moody city. Cities everywhere have become, or are becoming, all the same. I would have difficulty in telling a story of the anonymous suburbs where I grew up. It is difficult to have an overview of the bigger story of your city. What's more, I doubt any Viennese local shares the romantic notions that tourists have of the city. So, I found myself in this singular position as an outsider with preconceptions, where I can make up my own version of this place. As all fantasy contains some aspect of the truth, the listener can decide what they want to believe or dismiss. And, if you believe in it or not you, can still share your existential crisis with me in a Vienna cafe. URB: It's safe to say you are one of the most exploratory electronic composers out there; touching on a variety of genres and finding a niche wherever you go...how do you continue to evolve as a musician and composer with every musical direction you take? TM: I do feel the last years have been exploratory. There are a few reasons f | 2/21/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

URB Presents: Octave One LIVE | The Burden brothers have been doing things their own way for 20 years, putting out seminal records on Transmat, Underground Resistance and their own legendary imprint, 430 West. It's been Detroit love the entire way, naturally, even though the home base of Octave One has now switched over to another rich cultural center, Atlanta. The premise still hasn't changed; the Burdens are still putting out inspiring, indelible techno music that cannot be duplicated in the slightest. To celebrate the legacy of their long-standing career, Octave One released Revisited (Here, There, and Beyond), a remix retrospective of their classic tracks, carefully reimagined and revamped by artists from techno's glory days (Luke Slater, Aril Brikha), to current representations of the genre (Sandwell District). Along with the remix album, the duo have put out a mobile app for smartphones (which you can get at their website, 430west.com) with access to tour dates, exclusive news and media. To commemorate their remix retrospective, as well as show off their technological prowess, the duo offered us a live recording of their set in Bari, Italy, where they dazzled the crowd with a hardware-only live set that is truly stand-alone. Along with that, the group took the time to answer some questions about their move to Atlanta, their take on the current state of techno, and their journey to where they are now. Check it all out of after the jump. URB: Twenty years is an amazing chunk of time to be dedicated to a project like OCTAVE ONE, how have you persevered through the ever-changing waters of the electronic music scene? OCTAVE ONE: Twenty years is an amazing chunk of time for sure to be dedicated to a project, but for us Octave One is more than just a mere project. It's more an extension of who we are as beings, so it's quite effortless for the group to get our dedication for so long. And our perseverance through these ever changing waters is due to the fact that we always approach it as if it was our first, whilst we try to keep a steady course as to what we like no matter which way the current flows at the moment. So you won't become trendy to whatever, but consistent to what you believe. URB: You've got an indelible crew of amazing producers reworking your classic tunes, how did you come about finding the right people to work with the tunes that you've made? OO: We had set down and set our sights on artist to remix our songs that we either followed ourselves over the years and or we were recently introduced to there sound and feel in love with what they were doing and how they approach music. When we started of course we had a huge list of artist that we wanted to approach for the task at hand, but we had to slowly narrow the field to who we thought would give us the most interesting project as a collective. This had to be one of the most hardest decisions that we had to make since we've been in the business so long, you get the rest of your friends wondering and asking why we didn't ask them to remix a track, but we were looking at the project as a whole and we're pleased with the outcome. URB: Is there any particular remix that's special to you or impresses you more so than the others? OO: Actually, we love them all! The reason they're all special and impress us is because we know the songs as we produced them, we know the emotions, influences and moods that our track conveys. But we are totally astonished by what those some thoughts and ideas have inspired other artist to create as their remix works, it has totally blown our minds! We sat down initially and plotted out certain artist and we thought; “this guy is going to bring this kind of remix to the table according to their particular style.” So, when we decided to open up the freedom to our remixers to choose any song from our catalog to remix, we thought once again that we were somewhat familiar as to what type a track a particular artist would choose to remix. URB Presents: Hazylujah | Who is Hazylujah? It's not just some techno producer with a fantastic name. In fact, Massimiliano Vianello is a near-mad scientist that divulges influences between acid techno, dub and darkroom dance dimensions. With his first releasing coming out on the reliable imprint of Delsin Records, Massimilliano's sounds will be surrounded by a constantly-growing catalogue of amazing techno. With that being said, Hazylujah's journey into the electronic music world is only beginning, and we at URB are honoured to give him the platform with this exclusive mix of Hazylujah tracks, forthcoming on his Delsin EP, as well as some exclusive dubs. URB Presents: Ital Tek | Alan Myson's a producer that resembles a chameleon at times; under the guise of Ital Tek, he is constantly shifting his sound to keep the same atmospherics as his previous tunes, with his previous landmark releases "Blood Line", "Deep Pools" and 2009 LP Midnight Colour all maintaining his love for the spacey and mysterious. With his latest EP, Gonga, on Planet Mu, Myson explores the worlds of faster tempos, immersing himself in his own style of 160-BPM related calamity. Footwork is an obvious influence but his drum sounds, his structures are all a reversion to the singular sounds of past Ital Tek releases. Maybe that's why everything he makes is still damn good. Ital Tek is always looking into the future, as evident in our small interview down below, but as of right now, he delivers URB an excellent and crafty mix in tempos that makes us want to get in that circle and see what we're made of. Check out the interview, tracklist and mix after the jump. URB: It seems like Planet Mu has become home to you as your sound has grown, what's changed in your perspective that has influenced your changing direction in the tunes you've been making recently? ITAL TEK: Yeah I 've been releasing with Planet Mu for the past 5 years or so and enjoy being part of a label that I'm also a big fan of. The label pushing footwork recently has had a big impact on me, it's definitely the most exciting music I've heard in a long time and that has rubbed off on me with regards to my perspective on production. It's hard to say how my perspective has changed specifically as it is always a fluid thing, I try to bring together many different influences of mine and create a sound that is honest to my own musical vision. It's also been good to work on some tracks that are more or less all percussion based as so much of what I do is based around melody and texture. URB: It seems like your more drawn to faster tempos, footwork and juke and such, has your production style changed at all because of the change in style/tempo? IT: I'm always trying to push myself to try new things musically, and if I feel I'm staying in my comfort zone for too long I get restless. Over the last couple of years listening to so much footwork and juke has made me want to encapsulate that energy into my productions and it's been refreshing for me to make tracks that are faster and rougher than what I have been doing on my last few records. Working within a different framework and still trying to bring my own sound into the equation is something I always try to do as I hate treading water or going over the same ground time and again. Aside from an improvement in my technical knowledge and ability over the years I wouldn't say that my production style has changed all that much even if the styles of music that I write have. I want someone to be able to listen to all the kinds of tracks I make and be able to hear my sound in there, and that's something that's very important to me. URB: What's the future got in store for Ital Tek in 2012? The main project for 2012 is my third album which I'm really excited to get out there for people to hear. It's the hardest I've ever worked on a record and it's done my head in quite a bit to be honest as at times it's been a difficult process but I'm really happy now with what I've achieved. It's nearly finished, just polishing up bits and trying to find a sequence that works. Also I have recently completed a pretty extensive sample pack which will be released in february by www.loopmasters.com There will be more from my label Atom River this year aswell, and some production work I've been doing for other artists. Aside from that I'm going to be touring as usual, hopefully I'll get to go to some corners of the world I've not yet played. URB: Tell us a little bit about this mix you've done for URB. This mix is pretty much all around 160 BPM featuring tracks from my recent Gonga EP with unreleased and newish stuff from produce | 1/19/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

URB Presents: Dro Carey | The increasingly-inventive and intensive sounds of Sydney's Dro Carey are highlighting URB's first podcast of 2012. He is a mysterious figure, putting as much allusion in his musical work as his visual work, relaying a style that bends a prototypical genre and in some ways, just bastardizes it (in the most amazing way possible). Dro's sounds at time can be strange and head-scratching, propogating conflicting rhythms and challenging sequences, but that's really the ultimate charm of the DroC. Whether its his own tunes or the mix he's done for URB, the man just knows how to push the right buttons in terms of not just making one really listen to what's going on, but to analyze and accept it simultaneously. With releases currently out on Hum + Buzz, Trilogy Tapes and RAMP Recordings, the journery has only just begun for the young mysterioso. Check out the mix and tracklist after the jump. URB Presents: Matador | It's always exciting to discover new talent in the techno community, and few are more talented than Irish DJ/engineer/producer Gavin Lynch, aka Matador. Discovering techno during it's late '90s heyday by consumed by mix CDs such as Richie Hawtin's Decks, EFX & 909, Lynch spent the past deacde mastering the studio while becoming a favorite on Dublin dance floors and releasing tunes on his own Accitone imprint. The rest of the European techno community was soon paying attention, with original tunes and remixes for London's Perc Tracks, Frankfurt's Cocoon and Harthouse, and most recently, Berlin's Plus 8 and Minus, all being charted by jocks worldwide. Matador's exclusive mix for URB comes chocked-full of his own productions, including several off his brand new Kingswing EP for Minus as well as his remix of Bryan Zentz's classic '90s tune, "D-Clash." Dig the pure techno that doesn't sound purist. And read a quick interview with Matador after the tracklist. Sasha Carassi_Lateral Pressure_Dj Tool Matthew Dear_Free To Ask_SIS Edit Matador_Handbagass_David Mayer Remix Seq_Metropolis_Soukie_Windish Remix Shdwplay_Drama Queen Mark Dennis_Bombler Matador_Savvy Louie Cut_Bounce Matador_Hitbox Sam Ball_Creeps & Beasts Matador_Nomans Land Lars Wickinger_Sez & Sushi Slam_Stepback_Mark Henning Remix Matador_Kenekt Matador_Dikspring Matador_Kingswing Bryan Zentz_D-Clash_Matador Remix URB: Dublin is not the first place you think of when you think "techno." How would you best describe the community there? Matador: It's certainly not the first city in Europe you would associate with techno, however, there is quite a refined techno scene in Dublin if you look in the right places. I've played some of my wildest parties here, the old Acii Disco and Mixed Salad events at McGruders were some high times! At the moment its very much a case of right place, right time. How does the city compare to other places you have visited/played? The clubs have a different sense of energy about them here in Dublin compared to other European clubs, and thats due to the very conservative closing time of 2:30AM!!!??!! A night builds up pace quite quickly, and it's over before you know it. Whereas in most other European cities, some clubs run right through to the next day, giving a whole different flow and energy to the night, which i quite like. Your first release with one of Richie Hawtin's labels was a remix of an old Bryan Zentz track, "D-Clash." What inspired that? I was in the studio one night, listening to some records, one of them being "D-Clash." I took a small video clip of the record and posted it. The next day, my good friend Ali Wells (Perc) messaged me suggesting I should do a remix because it would suit my style. It came together over a few days. Delighted it got released, and better again, on Plus 8! Your sound has a different energy than the traditional Minus sound in some ways. Did you approach making the new EP differently with the Minus style in mind? No, not really. I spoke with Rich about doing a release and then spent a few months in the studio. I wrote a bunch of tracks and some were more suited to the label than others. Like a lot of techno producers, I've always been a big fan of the label and its sound, so I'm sure that has affected how I produce in some way or another. You played the Minus Bermuda after party in Berlin, which was a high-profile gig for you. Were you happy with it? Yes, it was a very memorable gig. An amazing experience and a pretty wild party by the end of it! There were a few moments that my brain took"snapshot images." I mages that I'll never forget! Good times, and a great crew to be a part of!! | 12/14/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

URB Presents: BNJMN | URB loves all the mysterious producer vibes that are strewn upon the UK. You can talk to us about anyone being weird, mysterious, evasive and just downright dark and we will totally eat it up; which is why it shouldn't be any surprise as to why the shadowy UK producer BNJMN is delivering this week's contribution to URB's podcast series. Currently with only a handful of releases out on Svetlana Industries and Rush Hour (including his newest LP, Black Square), BNJMN is still fairly fresh in his output but already cementing a reputation for his atmospherics and illusionary production style. Bordering between abstract and ambiguous, the mix he has provided for URB represents the world around his sonics perfectly. We chatted with the producer briefly about his origins, the differences between his first Rush Hour release and his current LP, as well as what's in line for the future. Check out the interview and tracklist after the jump. URB Presents: BNJMN Q/A URB: What are the origins of BNJMN? BNJMN: I started the BNJMN project around 2008, at the same time I was getting bored with the more down-tempo hiphop stuff I was making at the time (under the name Jackhigh), and felt like I needed something new to broaden my horizons. I started getting really into a lot of the more experimental Techno stuff, like Theo Parrish, Efdemin, etc. It all stemmed from there. URB: Your sound is impressively individualistic, not pigeon-holed in any sort of genre or sub-genre? What are the main influences of your constantly evolving sound? B: I'm influenced by everything really. The music I make is very personal to me; I feel like it reflects whatever I'm going through in my life. Musically, I'm influenced by all sorts, at the moment I'm listening to a Karen Dalton live album which is amazing, proper stripped-down folk music. I'll switch between stuff like that; electronic stuff, soundtrack music, etc. URB: What's your studio set-up like? B: Very simple; It's literally just a laptop, a pair of speakers, and a MIDI keyboard. URB: This is your second extended release on Rush Hour. What brings you back to the label and has do you feel your sound has changed since Plastic World? B: I feel like my sound has changed a lot. Plastic World was made in 2008, at the time when I'd just started to create 4/4 house/techno-based music. It was very naive, but at the same time so is my new LP. I try and stay as open as possible when I'm creating music and really don't think in terms of genres, It’s a very natural process; I feel like the new record is a lot better produced but I would say that! *laughs* Plastic World is quite raw, it wasn't even properly mastered because I'd compressed it so much. I feel like this new one is much warmer. URB: What does the future for hold for BNJMN? Any live/DJ gigs upcoming? B: I have a few gigs coming up, I'm playing in London next week at a Svetlana Industries night, and then I'm playing at Panorama Bar in December which is really exciting yet daunting. For now, I'm just playing my music live but I'm also planning to do some DJ gigs, if you like what you hear in this mix then get in touch with my booking agent (david@airlondonmusic.com) TRACKLIST 01. URB Presents Modeselektor | This week's podcast comes from Berlin's biggest electronic crossoever act, Modeslektor. The duo spent much of the summer touring America as part of the inagural Identity Festival, which brought all stripes of electronic music to the nation's secondary markets. And how did this pair—who met in the heady '90s heyday of Berlin's techno renaissance—relate to the candy-colored kids of middle America? Quite well, as their mix of techno, breaks, hip-hop, crunk and indietronic (thanks to guest vocals by folks like Thom Yorke) won over the dancing trancing masses. Modeselektor have new album out, Monkeytown, which features the afforementioned Radiohead singer, plus underground hip-hoppers Antipop Consortium and Busdriver, as well as frequent collaborator Apparat. This podcast mix previews a little bit of that material, but covers a lot more ground in the duo's career. Check it out. 01. HEADHUNTER - PROTOTYPE (MODESELEKTOR RMX) 02. URB Presents Eliot Lipp | Throughout his decade-long career, Eliot Lipp has explored various ends of the beat spectrum for labels such as Eastern Developments, Hefty, Metatronix, and Mush. From his earliest instrumental hip-hop recordings, produced on a collection of mostly-broken gear in Chicago, to his years in New York spent facinated with the more obtruse side of techno and constant touring that has found him playing for seasoned beatheads and college-aged dance fans alike, Lipp always surprises folks with the catchiness of his clever recordings. Lipp's most recent efforts, a collaboration with childhood friend Jasia 10, find him going back to his crate-digging roots. The pair are getting ready to release an album, How We Do : Moves Made, on Lipp's own Old Tacoma Records, named after the hometown where the pair first bonded. This week's URB podcast offers a special mix of tunes that inspired the album, along with two unreleased tracks from Lipp himself. URB Presents: Cyrus | When it comes to experiencing proper bass response at 140BPM, look (and hear) no further than the dubstep-don Cyrus. A living legend amongst dubstep aficionados, his tunes have been spread across some of the most influential electronic labels in recent history (Planet Mu, Tectonic, Deep Medi), he's been a staple in the rooted sounds of proper dubstep. Keeping him stablized through the rise and fall of the genre, he's still pushing what's important of the genre; the ultimate vibe. We speak with the man about his take on what's going on with dubstep, along with his involvement with Mala's Deep Medi imprint, and of course, highlight his exclusive mix for URB. URB:You're a stalwart in the purist dubstep community. What's your take on dubstep's mainstream acceptance and/or its production decline? CYRUS: I can’t help but look on the negative side to this as I’ve seen what happened to jungle/DnB and UKG. It just squeezes the life out of what made something popular in the first place. It loses its originality and becomes watered down; I suppose being part of its foundations you become protective of it. URB: You're a veteran of this sound, to put it simply. Do you feel like the same foundations of dubstep are still found in certain pockets of electronic music today? Or does it feel disassembled at this point? C: Once a song becomes popular people seem to latch on to that specific sound. It becomes a safe bet, a formula and I think when ‘dubstep’ came along it gave producers from other genres a push to try something new. URB: You've obviously still been making tons of music since 2004. You haven't stopped and you've stuck to your signature sounds. What's different of the Cyrus sound nowadays as opposed to two or four years ago? C: Not too much really. I mean my overall sound has Improved as I’ve progressed and gained more knowledge about production and engineering But for me, dubstep was and always will be about originality, the low end and that’s what I continue to push. It’s not the most ‘fashionable’ style of ‘dubstep’ at the moment but I won’t compromise on something I believe in just to be popular. URB: Deep Medi is a home to genuine 140BPM music to many; what was your reason to put out this record on the label? C: Mala signed me to the label last year with my first release being “Manhattan Blues” (released earlier this year). We spoke about me maybe doing an album so I sent a bunch of new tunes over to be considered. After listening to them we both decided to do a string of 12” singles with “The Calling” and “Visions” being one of them. Deep Medi is one of the biggest and most respected labels in the scene so to be part of it is an honour. URB: Finally, what can we expect of Cyrus in the not-too-distant future? C: Now that winter is on its way, I plan to lock myself in the studio and get next years releases written. Summer time and the studio don’t go well together, as I like to be outdoors so I’ve been a little slack the last few months. I have a little something special planned for next year but I don’t want to say too much until it’s set in stone. I also work alongside Darkside and his brother Ashley co-running the biggest source for all things dubstep ‘Getdarker.com’. As well as our best selling ’This is dubstep’ compilations we’re currently doing a Get Darker tour around the UK & Europe with talks about making it a world tour. | 9/20/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

URB Presents: TEETH | Finland calling once again; while we had Clouds break in our coverage of producers repping the Finnish flag, no one has made a splash as fast and as stylishly as the one called Teeth. Dropping with a retroactively sensual "help-line" video for his 502 Recorings debut "Shawty", he's only built up his stunning reputation by delivering a stellar live set worldwide via the cross-cultural platform that is The Boiler Room and dropping another stellar 12" on the Noppa label, featuring tracks "Cnt" and Lowcut Champagne". While that's great in and of itself, what's to come is even more exciting; an EP on the immersive RAMP label entitled Swarm/Shift/Sequence/Spawn, and a live set at one of URB's favorite festivals, Unsound. To celebrate all these glorious things, Teeth gave us a mix that will make you sweat whilst listening; grab a towel, a drink and a cigarette. I mean, if the mix caption is "Get Down To Let Down To Get Up", you know it's going to be something...sweat-inducing. URB Presents: TEETH 01. Zebra Katz - SEX SELLZ (CDR) 02. URB Presents: Funkineven | At times on the dance, it's all about the boogie. That familiar bassline, that aura of nostalgia and the ever-present vibe that is funk. This is what FunkinEven excels at greatly; creating something familiar and fresh simultanesouly. A staple on the always-present Eglo Records (which features fellow producers Floating Points and ARP 101), he has solidified a sound that borders the genres of acid, funk, boogie and early Chicago house. It's surely his own brand of music, which is dancefloor-worthy at any given time. With tracks like "Heart Pound" and "Rolands Jam" explicity laying out the foundation of his production palette, he is one of the most intriguing and anticipated artists we could've picked out for an URB mix. We actually had this mix ages ago, but it got lost in the shuffle, almost forever (on a barely-living external hard drive); however with some proper digging (and a craving for analogue love), we brought it to this moment. The premiere of something special. Get your best dancing shoes on. Time to boogie. URB Presents: The Black Dog - Dark Wave Vol. 2 | What's needed to be said about this week's podcast? It's only from one of the more iconic groups in electronic music history. The Black Dog have taken many forms in the way of lineup changes, but the musical approach has always been ahead of its time, from their iconic releases on Warp Records (Bytes, Spanners) to their latest, more techno-rooted vibes on the fantastic Soma and Dust Science labels (Further Vexations, Ov Mind Ov Magick); they've avoided pigeon-holing themselves time and time again by remaining true to what lies within their deep, dark minds. Apparently in this mix, it involves a lot of brooding techno and an onslaught of tunes from one of the most impressive young producers to date, Blawan. That's not a bad thing at all. This mix is surely something that needs to be experienced prior to highlighting a dark night of bass. With that said, get the headphones on full-blast and the body ready to move at will, enjoy this amazing mix from the legends themselves. Tracklist after the jump. URB Presents: Clouds | Finland's got something to be giddy about musically nowadays; the producers native to the region have been making rounds from past to present, ranging from the near-legendary Tes La Rok, the always-intriguing Desto and the newest star on the block, TEETH. Then there's Clouds, the duo of Tommi Liikka and Samuli Tanner, who have truly paved their own way in the current climate of producers not just in Finland, but internationally. Having released tunes on labels like 2nd Drop, RAMP Recordings and Deep Medi, their sound is never stuck in one place and always finsd something sonicallty fresh to explore. With their latest Deep Medi release, Lot Of Calls From No One PT2, put out last week, as well as a forthcoming full-length in the pipeline, URB chatted with the duo about their origins, the Finnish music scene and their upcoming future. Along with that, they provided an intricately deep mix of tunes carefully crafted for our podcast series. Tracklist and interview after the jump. URB: How did the two of you meet and become the duo that is now CLOUDS? SAMULI: We've known each other for a long time; probably since ‘99 or something. We occasionally did some things related to music together, played at the same events and at some point we were in a folk band together with some friends. Then in 2006 there was a room for rent in the house Tommi was living in, and I moved in. Tommi was already organizing dubstep/grime parties, when one day we did this mash-up of Benga's "World War 7" and Baby Cham's "Ghetto Story" to be played as a one-time special in a party. It was so much fun working together that we decided to start producing our own music as Clouds. URB: Some people still don't know that you're a Finnish duo. How's the music scene in Finland? Is there support for your sound as well as other Finnish artists? TOMMI: There’s lots of quality electronic music coming from Finland that many people here don't even know about. The biggest problem here is the lack of good venues. We live in such a small country that there is a limited amount of gigs you can play a year, but there still is an active bunch of people who come to see shows, always. URB; How did you get in touch with Deep Medi? T: We started sending music to Mala before there was such a label. Mala is one of the few we've sent almost all the tracks we have made. In the spring of 2008, we sent a bunch of new tunes for him, and we were playing a gig in Shanghai when we got a message that he wanted to put out "Protecting Hands" on Deep Medi. URB: Besides Deep Medi, you've managed to release a bunch of tunes on different labels -- RAMP, 2nd Drop, etc -- how do you maintain the expansiveness of your sounds when you've had releases different labels? S: I can't concentrate on one thing; it's probably a good and a bad thing. Our sound keeps changing and taking different forms every time we go to the studio; but sometimes its difficult to fit tracks together. I’m not sure if we will ever be at a point where there will be just one sound that we will be doing. Maybe that is our sound; just to be looking for the next one. URB: Tell us a little bit about this mix you've made for URB. T: It's a mixture of new stuff we've been listening to lately and some old favorites from both of us. Actually, we had to cut the amount of tunes to half to keep the mix within the 60-minute timeframe. There are a few of our own productions that will probably end up on our future album. Also, there's a song from a project Samuli has been working with his little sister Tiiu. I started reading URB in the late 90's, it was one of the only magazines that I could find stuff about L.A. underground hip-hop (Goodlife/Project Blowed), so I feel honored that you guys asked us to do this mix. | 7/19/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

URB Presents: Nightwave | It's been an interesting ride for the gal they call Maya, now known as Nightwave (previously known as The 8Bitch). Hailing originally from the nation of Slovenia, her journey included a stop to Glasgow and settling in London, where of course there's no shortage of amazing producers (please Google search because if you don't know by now, you haven't paid enough attention). Between the influences of her earlier love for electronic music, the emerging London bass scene and the Glaswegian aura that is fueled by Detroit techno sensibility, Maya has embodied all those sounds and more in her latest release for Svetlana Industries, entitled The Feel EP. Exploring a platitude of genres and tempos, the EP emulates something soulfully evokative yet carefree on the dancefloor. With upcoming releases on Ghettophiles and Unknown To The Unkown, Nightwave certainly has a lot on her plate; so when she made this mix for us at URB, we knew it was something from the heart and for the floor. We thank her for that. We owe her a drink...alright, perhaps ten drinks. Get down to the mix and check out the tracklist after the jump. URB Presents: Nightwave Tracklist 01. URB Presents: In Flagranti | The duo of Sassha Crnobrnja and Alex Gloor are giving URB the business this week; you may know them as In Flagranti, the duo behind the Codek Records imprint and behind the sounds that twist the worlds of funk, Italo disco and New York-branded disco into something hip-shakingly good. Their last single release, "EX EX EX" was rinsed by disco and house impresarios worldwide as well as remixed by the likes of craftsmen like Bottin and Andy Butler from URB favorite Hercules & Love Affair. Their newest album, Worse For Wear, is also getting praise from international tastemakers such as Erol Alkan and the brotherly duo of Stephen and David Dewaele, better known as 2ManyDJs. In this exclusive pseudo-throwback mix, we get In Flagranti's cosmic perspective of if the space-time continuum crashed between our current time and the peak of the late-night disco era back in the '70s. URB Presents: Midland | It's not too often that shooting stars come across the radar of URB; luckily we get to hear one this time around. Harry Aegius, also known as Midland, is a producer that blends together all things house and techno and let's the music decide its own identity. Being played by techno, house, funky and dubstep DJs, the sounds of Midland are deep, dystopic and demonstrative of all things dance. In this exclusive interview, Midland spoke about his origins, his opinion on the current DJ climate he's thrusted in and his upcoming future. He also gave us one of the best mixes we have featured on this website. Top-notch from start to finish...check it out after the jump. URB x Midland Interview URB: What are the origins of Midland? MIDLAND: I grew up in a music-loving family and went to university being a bedroom DJ; I collected and play a lot DnB for a few years and towards the end of university to I started to produce, but not seriously. Then, not too long ago I wrote a tune with my housemate, (Pearson Sound/Ramadanman) called “Your Words Matter”. I don’t think I knew what I was going do when I left school but it’s all happened quite organically and accidentally. URB: How does your creative process work? Has it evolved throughout the years and releases? M: It’s a very odd creative process, I fire up the sequencer and just fiddle around, it could be slow house or future garage, it’s all a vibe sort of thing. You never know what you can create. I’m trying to combine musicality with a sense of vague songwriting. My latest single was a bit torturous, trying to keep it interesting every 16 bars but keep it similar but show development. I can’t stand the idea of writing a song where everything leads to monotony. URB: What was your “eureka” moment? M: I did a long walk across Spain, Camino de Santiago, an old-school pilgrimage route, when I came back I hadn’t listen to music for a month. One of the albums I first heard when I had come back was the Moderat album, which was amazing. It was so coherent and varied reminiscent of Aphex Twin, Air, Massive Attack all those sorts of people. It made me feel something more. URB: What are you current influences? M: The records I buy always really vary; I love tracky/functional house people like Levon Vincent, STL, Anton Zap tunes w raw and good grooves. I play some of that in my sets, but I love luscious stuff from Tin Man. I’m really lucky to be releasing and producing, because you can play everything and I like to adapt my sets to the night I’m playing to, I think every tune has a place. The thought of just buying stuff to play out seems illogical to me. I suppose that’s how music-making has been influenced. URB: Any upcoming releases in the next few months? M: Sometime later in the year, I’ll be having a track released on Ben Westbeech’s album, forthcoming on Strictly Rhythm. URB: Is it ever conflicting or confusing, playing on lineups with dubstep/funky/techno DJs with the sound that you’re pushing? M: To be honest, I’m benefiting from it, the promoters are responsible to keep things musically open for their nights; I think it’s a chance to play all sorts of stuff. I played FWD in London with Artwork and Omar-S the next night at a completely different place with a completely opposite vibe. People are always OK with it as long as you bring it. URB: Is there something, musically or production-wise you want to be unearthed out of yourself? M: I’ve been working on something more acoustic, but I’d love to produce for bands and soundtracks; there’s so much to explore. I don’t think it’ll always stick with the 4/4 kick drum, who knows? There are so many interesting avenues, and as a producer, you should always be challenging yourself. | 6/1/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

URB Presents: Steve Bug | There's a lot of things one could call Steve Bug; label owner, DJ, producer, music-lover and so on and so forth. The guy has so many hats to try on at times it's unbelievable how he juggles one occupation from the next. Whilst running one of the most broad-minded electronic labels at the moment (Poker Flat), he's maintained his stance on past, present and future audio concoctions from himself and others. With a busy schedule and a limited amount of time, Steve spoke URB about his label operations, upcoming releases and how he handles everything at once. Oh, and he gave us this fantastic mix. No tracklist. Open mind and open ears are necessary over here. Check out the interview after the jump. URB: The new compilation ‘Forward To The Past’ is out shortly. The title seems to be a statement of intent. Is that the case? Is this a mission statement for your label Poker Flat in general, or something specific to this release? STEVE BUG: Yes, the title is a statement, and it is very specific for this release. For this project we asked people specifically that we thought might also have a strong connection with the tracks of the early days like Kink + Neville Watson, Sasse, Deetron, Redshape and others. We wanted them to produce those paricular kind of tracks that sound really like tunes from that early era of Chicago House, Acid House, Detroit Techno and New York House and I am very happy with the results...but even in the "normal" Poker Flat releases you may hear a fondness for some of those sounds from the beginning of house and techno, but in general in the tracks we put out there is always something new to it. It's more trying to keep the original vibe but creating something new. That’s what is usually important for the label stuff. URB: You obviously operate several labels. Pokerflat. Dessous. Audiomatique. Each is known for its distinct sound. But I wonder is there an ethos that underlies all three. What is the common thread that ties the labels together, other than you being in charge? SB: Well it's my love for music that underlines all three and sometimes we really have a problem to instantly figure out on which of the labels we want to release a new demo, but then we always find a reason why it is more this than that label... URB: I’m sure today the labels are nowhere near as lucrative use of your time compared to DJing. What drives you to maintain one, let alone three? SB: Don't really know, it would be simply hard to put all those various styles of music on one imprint and as long as we get music that we want to release for any of the labels we will probably continue running those three labels. I can't help it, good music needs to be released even though it might not do as good as it used to years ago. URB: Poker Flat is obviously one of the top world labels in dance music. When it started it was very much underground. How do you cope with that growth? It is something you aspire to? SB: You just can't really keep things underground if you're not running away from people liking what you do. And what is underground anyways these days? For me it was always more about releasing music that I like and was worth releasing and when it was successful I was even happier. I mean, I would never ever release or produce anything just because I think it would sell well. Suiting my taste is always the first step and then we'll see what happens afterwards. But I was never being offended by more than a handful of fans buying our music; it feels great that so many people appreciate our work, that for us is still the same. URB: You played in L.A. with the Culprit crew. It is a pretty small party, compared to the normal Avalon or warehouse shows you play in LA. It is also a sunny daytime party, which I think isn’t an environment many Americans would associate with your sound. Is that a fair comment? What drew you to play that party? SB: The LA party was awesome it was the last party of | 5/25/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

URB presents: MANDY | This week's mix exits the studio and enters the club with a live mix from Get Physical co-owners Patrick Bodmer & Philipp Jung (aka MANDY), recorded live at Berlin's legendary club Watergate at the end of last year. It's all a warm up for the duo's newest mix CD, Body Language Vol. 2. We spoke to Patrick and Phillipp about the new CD. This is the tenth installment of the Body Language series. It started with yourselves and DJ T, and has since featured Dixon, Jesse Rose, DJ Hell, Modeselektor and others. What’s the common thread that binds the mixes together? What do you look for when choosing a DJ to head the mix? We mainly look for people that we personally like. People who fit with the label and who we like to work with. We try and work closely with the djs/producers on this series so you need to like and respect each other. Of course we also choose people whose music we appreciate and have been into for a long time. We have also tried to vary the series quite a bit too to provide an overall almost encyclopedic view on dancemusic. It’s been eight years or so since MANDY was last in charge of a Body Language CD, what did you guys do differently this time around for your mix? It has been six and a half, I think. For us the main difference was that our previous edition was our first one and of course you have a complete unspoiled and almost naive approach when you do something for the first time. We were listening to it the other day and believe it or not, we still really like it, which made us very happy. We always tried to find a way to make these compilations so they stand the test of time and that they are not something only for that particular moment. We always take about 4 months for a CD. It takes us so long to find the right tracks as we want to combine pretty much all the styles that we play as DJs, which makes it very difficult. In eight years of Get Physical you guys have gone from being a relatively small outfit, to becoming one of the most dominant and influential electronic labels around. Was there a plan for this growth when you started the label or did it surprise you? How does a response like that, and the accompanying expansion, affect an independent label, in terms of its musical ethos, and on a practical level? Booka Shade, T and ourselves started the label for the simple reason that nobody wanted to put our own music at the time. With the first records we pressed ourselves we went then to every distribution outlet in Germany and everybody rejected us except Intergroove. So with such a humble start, we can tell you there was no bigger picture for sure. Luckily for us people responded and things grew very fast, we always had very solid English support from people like Pete Tong which helped enormously. Like a lot of other labels we made the mistake of growing bigger and bigger, employing more and more people (we were 14 at some point). But we are a pure underground label and suffered of course big time from the downfall of physical sales. It took us while to adjust to the situation, but i think we have everything in place right now back here in Berlin. A nice little team (still 6 people) and we are happy to carry on as long as possible. There have been many Berlin sounds, over the years. I think Get Physical comprises a crucial part of that mix. I remember when Booka Shade were first starting to get noticed, people were saying that this was the sound of Berlin. Where do you think Get Physical fits in the sound of Berlin? As a resident of the city, do you feel there is a fixed Berlin sound or is it more temporal? You are right, it was considered as one big aspect of the Berlin sound and it probably was. The sound was pretty new at the time and influenced quite a few other labels. For me the berlin sound was always a bit darker and more minimal, but this was never working for us. We like the other side of the spectrum. But Berlin leaves so much space for everybody which is obviously | 4/19/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

URB Presents: Spatial | In New York City next week Unsound Festival will officialyl fall upon us, which means we can deliver this exclusive mix from one of the artists playing their unbelievable Bass Mutations lineup. Spatial steps up here, providing a lengthy and luminous mix of his own productions as well as exclusive cuts from URB favorites Joy O, xxxy and fellow Bass Mutations artists Appleblim and Dorian Concept. Along with a hefty mix of tunes that stretch the stream of consciousness from dark techno drums to Chicago house bounce, Spatial provided an interview that highlights the mix, his upcoming projects and an explanation as to how his signature sounds came into fruition. Check it all out after the jump. URB: What are the origins of Spatial? SPATIAL: It was a project I started in the mid ‘90s to investigate a certain lineage of sound system culture that represented andintersection between a very UK focused rave sound and “purer” sounding strains of dance like US and European techno. It was very driven by the whole UK sound happening at that time. I’d been producing on and off for a while before but without such a definite contextual focus. How dancey some of the material is arguable but it was always targeted at the sound systems. URB: What and/or who are you main influences, past and present? S: Tough question as there’s lots across so many styles! To give this context, I guess the mix is pretty representative of some more current inspirations. I¹m loving the overtly retro house / techno influences on Maurice & Joy O tracks - hence the Robert Armani sample overlaid on “Wade In” - the beat on that track is exactly that Chicago sound; so effective though. I love the fact those guys are making this material and what people like the Hessle Audio crew are doing. Kode9 and Hyperdub have been a big influence, maybe more in a contextual way. Appleblim helped lead the way crossing a lot of European sounds into UK bass - watch out for those tracks and material from myself and S-Max on a new label called Schmorgasboard. The guys from the wider Infrasonics universe; xxxy & Unknown to the Unknown (aka Hot City) are both on fire. Interestingly, with a heavy electro influenced sound. If we’re going way back then the 1st & 2nd wave Detroit guys – especially Carl Craig and the UK scene that spawned. Kirk Degiorgio, The Black Dog etc. I’m always a little torn as I have the most respect for people that think a bit outside the box but that doesn¹t always matter so much in a DJ context. Actress springs to mind on that note. Totally unrelated to dance, I experienced one of the best performances I’ve seen in a long while the other day by a guy called Ghédalia Tazartès. URB: Your sound has certainly evolved with every release you've put out on Infrasonics, what's upcoming with your sound and the label? S: I’ve got a CD compilation of my first four Infrasonics 10”s plus the extra digital material that accompanied each vinyl coming at the end of April. We’re also about to get another split 12” into the system. I¹ve got a variety of things circling - the aforementioned Smorgasbord release which includes a very straight techno track on one end and a more leftfield piece coming on a label called Broken20. URB: What's the main difference between LIVE/DJ for a Spatial set? S: I don¹t really play live and I’m not particularly interested in doing so for predefined music. Assuming you’re referring to the Unsound listing it’s really just referencing my digital setup which allows me to do a lot of tricks like beat juggling, sampling & looping etc on the fly. It’s a very flexible system and allows me to be pretty creative but still based around the metaphor of DJing i.e. it’s a DJ controller I use. You can hear all of this stuff in the mix if you listen carefully. I try not to overdo it though. URB: What are you looking forward to you with your upcoming appearance at Unsound NY? URB Presents: Kavsrave | The podcast dynamic changes once again this week with a [personally] long-awaited mix from prolific UK producer Kavsrave. Considering the reaction to his first release, Quotes EP (on Glaswegian imprint NUMBERS), he garnered support from everyone under the sun, proclaiming his tracks should be chart-toppers in an ideal, bass-craving world. That alone wasn't enough, as he contributed to one of 2010's best films (Black Swan), with another signature track "Illicit Dreaming" used in the film's club scene. He also isn't just sticking to just producing and DJing, as he also shares the workload at his label, Tighten Up Records, where he's just released The Break Up, an excellent and emotive bass burner. Along with giving URB an excellent mix full of surprises from UK and U.S. artists alike, Kavsrave has a chat with us to chat about the future of his label, himself and much more. Tracklist and interview down below... URB x Kavsrave Interview URB: What are the origins of KAVSRAVE? KAVSRAVE: I come from a town called Oxted, which is a stones throw from a place I’m sure most of your readers will of heard of by now, Croydon. URB: Your sound is very crisp and collecting influences from hip-hop, RnB and so much more. What or who are your main influences, sound-wise? K: I would say my main influences are mainly American producers like Tricky Stewart, Los Da Mystro, Polow Da Don and UK producers like Terror Danjah, Guido & Joker etc URB: What's going on with your label, Tighten Up Records? What's the future holding for it? K: Yeah I’m really excited about what's in store for the label. We've had really good feedback on what we've done so far, and we've got some excellent releases lined up. Next up will be "Shock Headed" by A1 Bassline released on march 14th, then there's the return of garage legend Dem2, with his new single "Holding", after that we've got a couple of amazing debut releases from new signings FOLD and A.L.F.I.E, we're hoping to be putting out an average of two releases per month. URB: What does Kavsrave have in store for the rest of 2011? K: We've just finished making and distributed a video for The Break Up, made by a company we use called Artwar, I can't wait for people to see it, they've made a superb job of it. Otherwise, I'll be concentrating on getting a steady flow of releases out there, Djing, as well as building the names of Kavsrave and Tighten Up Records. URB: Tell us a little bit about this mix that you put together... K: I wanted this to be a representation of what people can expect when they come to see me play, and what I’m all about. URB Presents: DJ Vadim | This week's podcast is provided by one of the true autuers of the music world: DJ Vadim. Throughout a career of insurmountable releases, shows, projects and aliases, Vadim has found ways to infuse quite possible all the world's sounds into his mixes and tracks seamlessly and intricately. A veteran presence in the DJ community as well as one of the foremost producers in too many communities to count, Vadim is never running out of ideas. With his new venture, a group effort known as The Electric (featuring UK vocalist Sabira Jade and MC Pugs Atomz) the approach is different from his previous projects, as he's said "the songs are filled with more triumph, more sadness, more faith in the supernatural, much deeper feelings." We're totally into it and looking forward to their upcoming release, and in accordance with that, Vadim has given a non-tracklisted mix of truly rooted hip-hop cuts in his signature fashion. Breath it all in. | 3/3/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

URB Presents: dBridge | This week's podcast is surely something special considering it's coming from Darren White, also known as the master of the Autonomic sound, dBridge. While putting out releases on labels like Fat City, Nonplus, as well as his own Exit Records imprint, dBridge has been shifting the subconsciousness of the drum 'n bass sound into something emotive, atmospherically-driven and determined to make people do what they are supposed to do with their ears: listen closely. Coming off releasing one of the best compilations of 2011, (Exit Records: Mosaic Volume 1 which includes tracks from Scuba, Distance, ASC and many more) dBridge shows us not only his omnipresent focus on his informative brand of DnB but also explores the worlds of hip-hop and just straight tuff beats. Dubbed originally the "Mosaic Mix Part 1" (which you will hear frequently said in this mix), this creates a path between the mind's interpretation of hip-hop and DnB and creates a universal loophole where they can co-exist fruitfully. In conclusion, it's amazing. Best part? No tracklist. Just enjoy it for what it is; a journey. | 2/22/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

URB Presents: Star Eyes | There's few DJs out there that are as evocative of their musical dedication as Star Eyes is; growing up in the golden age of early '90s rave she found her way to explore the genres, the culture and everything else associated with it. After moving to New York City some years back, she became a member of the now-worldwide-known Trouble & Bass crew. It made sense, after all the crew was all about bringing back the glory days of rave in current times. However, nowadays it is singulary Star Eyes that will occasionally drop a classic XL-based rave tune in a set that will make people feel some stunning nostalagia, or even open the door to that piano-rave world. Always exploring new sounds while remaining true to her roots, Star Eyes is not only one of T&B's best DJs but certaintly one of the best in the States. If anyone doubts as to why that is, then they should listen to her mix she gave to URB, which is something behold (and go apeshit to). Also, she gave us a little info regarding her roots, her plans for 2011 and her favorite obscure records. Peep the interview and tracklist down below. URB: What are the origins of Star Eyes? STAR EYES: Star Eyes originated in Los Angeles as a 15-year-old die-hard raver in love with jungle music and dark warehouse parties. The name comes from a 12" called "Star Eyes (Remix)" by Cosmo & Dibs (Moving Shadow, 1993), a frantic piece of breakbeat hardcore with a vocal of a girl singing "I control the party"! URB: You've been DJing for a long time, what was your most challenging moment throughout the years? SE: The most challenging moments are always the times when there isn't any new music you are excited about. It's like being an addict with no drugs. There have been various times where I felt things were getting stagnant and got frustrated, but I've learned to keep doing stuff and keep moving (sometimes physically, like when I left SF for NYC), and things have a way of working themselves out. URB: You've been making tunes in the past two years, what gear/software do you use? SE: Pretty basic and bare bones. I use Logic 8 with a MIDI controller and various software synths.. My favorite at the moment is Rob Papen's SubBoomBass. Occasionally I use Ableton. Currently extracting some midnight synth sounds from a Nord Lead keyboard that's been on loan to me from Mad Marietta. URB: What's next for Star Eyes in 2011? SE: Star Eyes x Dust La Rock x Mishka mixtape of all Psychic TV stuff out in March, also a tour of Poland tour and the WMC Trouble & Bass party. My White Gloves EP out in May on Trouble & Bass, a bunch of remixes (Riviera, Lil Tal, Creep), and maybe even some songs I've written. Other than that, playing a lot of parties, making a lot of noise, and spending as much time by the ocean as possible. URB: Three most necessary rave records in your opinion. SE:It's impossible to name the three most necessary! Just depends what mood you're in. Here are three that aren't the most obscure titles, but nonetheless had a huge effect on me. Hyper-On Experience "Lord of the Null Lines" (Moving Shadow) I aspire to one day make tunes as interesting and cinematic as Hyper-On Experience did. Their tracks are these epic journeys that you can play from start to finish—nothing obvious or repetitive here. This is their best-known track, a dark trip down the rabbit hole with ultra-loopy bass and a mind-bending array of samples, including the legendary "There's a void where there should be Ecstasy" sample. I think it's fair to say I have every inch of this song memorized. Urban Shakedown "Some Justice 95" (Urban Shakedown) More popularly known as "Arsonist," Aphrodite and Mickey Finn remixed their 1992 rave classic "Some Justice" into another classic for the ragga-jungle heads. Rapid-fire vocals and jungle breaks for the serious soldiers, with the most unforgettable bass and subs. A guaranteed rewind until forever. URB Presents: Aardvarck | This week we delve into one of the more individualistic mixes we've had come across the site. The Amsterdam-based label/record store Rush Hour (an URB favorite) have been putting out amazing releases that stretch out from pure house gems provided by producers such as Tom Trago, to releases that push the envelope of rhythmic madness from Cosmin TRG and FaltyDL; the label has succeeded in cultivating a catalogue of profound productions in the past, present and future. While there are more Rush Hour artists on the way to give URB some more sonic goodness, our first foray into the label's engaging roster of artists comes from one of the most mysterious ones of the lot: Aardvarck. Not much is known about him expect for the fact that the shirt he's wearing in the image provided is totally epic and that his releases go between the realms of hip-hop, off-kilter 2-step and his own personal version of house music. The mix he provided for URB not only shows his sense of taste but also his involvement into crafting a personalized vision of the music he plays out. With tracks that range from bare beats to future masterpieces, this is surely one of the more adventurous and eclectic mixes URB has ever been handed. There are edits about on this mix (with too many to count) all provided by Aardvarck, and while some tracks may sound different, it's all for good reason. URB Presents: Mele | This week's mix is an absolute bevy of floor-smashing material courtesy of the young and prolific producer extraordinaire, Melé. While's he's only been around and about for about year or so, he has already achieved so much in a short time. Garnering attention from BBC Radio 1, the jack-of-all-musical-trades Sinden as well as URB favorite Ikonika, Melé's tunes find a way to build up, break down and throw down something exciting and evocative on a dancefloor. Along with an incredibly stellar mix he did for URB, Melé took the time to answer some questions about his origins and his upcoming releases in the coming year. Tracklist and interview after the jump. URB x Melé Interview URB: Who is Melé and what are his origins? MELE: Until I was about 11, I had no interest in music at all, my dad used to always have Ibiza CD's lying about & I remember telling him I'd never be into any of that! When I was 12 I got into hip-hop; I used to take my Mum to Virgin Megastore in Liverpool and she would buy me hip-hop vinyl every month or so, I've still got a few of them now! URB: When and how did you start DJing/making tunes? M: My uncle was a producer so I got into it because it looked fun. I had turntables when I was 13/14 but I started learning to DJ when I was about 16. URB: You've sort of blown up really quickly in the last year or so, what do you think attributed to that? M: I suppose its down to the DJ's and people that have been supporting my music. It's been cool to have support from the people I've been listening to for years. URB: You've got a bunch of releases coming out on different labels, what's coming up and for whom, exactly? M: First up is my EP on Sinden's label, Grizzly. Three tracks that are essentially house tunes as well as two great remixes from Mensah & Sinden. I'm also doing a 12" for Ikonika and Optimum’s label Hum and Buzz, which is going to be a bit different to what I've done before (160 BPM stuff). I'm also working on another EP for Mixpak! URB: Biggest 2011 goal for Melé: M: To make as much music as possible & to do more traveling all over the globe. URB Presents: Melé Tracklist 01. Melé - Mugged (Sinden Remix) (Grizzly) 02. URB Presents: Lukid | This week's exclusive mix in our carefully curated podcast series comes from one Luke Blair, better know by the moniker of Lukid. Known previously for his abstract and ambivalent beat-heavy productions, Lukid's latest record, Chord, distinguishes itself from his previous releases by embracing the experimental field of the 140BPM tempo, along with impressionable beats and melodies wrapped in an album that's worth checking out no matter what one listens to. While Lukid came upon the surface by putting his stamp on an abstract world of hip-hop and downtempo rhythms, his mix for URB stretches the imagination; blending hip-hop, techno and emblematic electronic madness all in a mix that embodies a rave in one's mind. URB Presents: Morgan Zarate | This week's podcast is a special one courtesy of the incredibly dynamic producer, Morgan Zarate. If you haven't heard of him yet, you probably will sooner or later, thanks to his upcoming Hookid EP coming out this month on Hyperdub. Morgan's previous musical experience includes producing some amazing records with the likes of Amp Fiddler, Musiq Soulchild, Rafael Saddiq, Frank 'n Dank and his own influential group, Spacek. Never one to cease to find the connections between all facets of sound, Morgan's upcoming Hyperdub release reflects echoes and mutations of grime, hip-hop and RnB tinged with a signature sound that's ever-present in anything you'll likely hear from him. Demonstrative in his URB mix, he's not one to stick to one genre or sound in any instance. Along with this fantastic mix, Morgan took some time to chat with us about his journey to joining the Hyperdub label, his upcoming album and future plans. Check out the interview and tracklist after the jump. URB Presents: Morgan Zarate INTERVIEW URB: How did end up on Hyperdub? MORGAN ZARATE: @font-face { font-family: "Cambria"; }p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 10pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; }I had met Kode9 a few times through friends and he'd always mention he was into my music. After hearing him on Benji B's show and the way he talked about the music he was making, his approach to the label, it basically made me want to go and play him the music I'd been making. URB: It's quite interesting to see you now embracing these sounds compared to your older productions with Spacek, where and how did this sound come about? MZ: Spacek was a while ago so I think it'd be odd if I sounded the same today. To me it's not so different, just another side. URB: This release is certainly oriented with current bass culture in the UK, but also staying true to your previous productions with Spacek in a way. How do you maintain staying fresh with the current music climate along with remaining in an individualistic stance? MZ: I'm just staying fresh to myself. If it sounds fresh to other people that's even better. URB: This isn't the only sort of sound you're working on, am I correct in saying this is only one piece of the sounds you're working on? Are there any different sorts of projects (sound-wise) that aren't focused on "bass", per se? MZ:I make mostly electronic-based music, even if it sounds live, but not all of it would fit the "bass" tag. I can't make music with walls; whatever comes out is what it is. I know everything will have a genre tag but I look at it like it's all the same. That's how hip-hop is...you get a rapper on a Turkish funk loop and on the same record spitting over 808's and a saw. It's open! URB: Do you pay any attention to the other tunes and producers around you or stay focused on what you solely do with your tunes? Are there any artists you're currently enjoying (if so, why?) MZ: Don't really keep up on that, but I'm listening to loads of good stuff, music I want to hear when I go out like Terror Danjah, Newhams, the LuckyMe crew, Night Slugs lot, Butterz lot, Tricky Stewart, Ty$...there's loads. Anyone that's making inventive rhythm-based music with soul really, that's what I'm playing; also I'm always listening to crazy records for samples. URB: Surely this isn't the end of your solo productions, what's in the future, sound and release-wise for Morgan Zarate? MZ: There’s an allbum this year with Hyperdub as well as a band project that sounds live but it's not. URB: After Spacek you produced quite a few tracks for hip-hop and soul acts, could you tell us about these and how this work has impacted the music you're working on for your upcoming album MZ: I've worked with some greats in the last few years, Eska, Raphael Saadiq, Frank N Dank. URB Presents: xxxy | To start the year off right, URB has brandished a new look on every podcast, with invigorating and simplistic values that represent what we have in terms of our mixes. To start with that message, we begin with a mix from Rupert Taylor a.k.a. the elusively brilliant xxxy. Peeking his way into the hearts of many with his tunes released on labels such as Fabric, Infrasonics and Mindset, he's become a sought-after DJ to pair up with his fantastic tracks. What's intriguing about his mix for URB is that one would never expect someone previously rooted in 140BPM beats (now sitting around 130BPM) to put out a mix as diverse and as immersive as this one. Supra1 & The Phantom | This week's URB podcast comes from two special acts from the country of Poland. Both well-buzzed and well-versed in their respectful sounds. the duo of Supra1 and the man known as The Phantom are making quite a stir not just in Poland but worldwide as well. With Supra1 putting together solid releases for Brooklyn's revered Trouble & Bass label as well as an upcoming project with fellow Polish producers Catz N' Dogz, the duo is primed to keep progressing into something bigger and better as time goes on. The Phantom is a completely different story; as his newest self-titled EP is currently out on Senseless Records (along with a visually scintillating video for his tune "Connect The Dots"), he's only begun to scratch the surface. With both acts providing fantastic sets at Unsound Festival 2010 in Krakow, they collaborated on this mix, 50/50 style to show their similar yet different tastes in all things bass. If you want to know what Poland sounds like from the underground, this is your best chance to hear it. TRACKLIST: Supra1// 1.Pinch - Croydon House 2.Cosmin TRG - Beton Brut 3.Martyn feat. Machinedrum 'Footwerk Classixxx Da Revenge Mix | Travis Stewart is a man of many faces, but if you have your ear to the ground and love to wig out to anything juke-related, you’d have to hit up his most well-known alias of Machinedrum. Recently he’s been throwing down live sets of juke and footwork (an offset of juke, more half-step based and heavy on soulful/silly sampling) and is continuing to blossom with his latest output via LuckyMe, The Many Faces of Machinedrum. Going between house, hip-hop and of course juke, the LP is definitive of how vast the world of Machinedrum’s music can go. In this exclusive mix, Travis lets out his wild side, a “classic” mix that’s a sequel to a previous mix he did for LuckyMe about a year ago, where he highlights upcoming Planet Mu Chicago signings (DJ Elmoe, DJ Nate, DJ Roc, DJ Rashad) as well as highlights some unsung tunes that really should be in everyone’s interest to listen. This is THE DEFINITIVE JUKE AND FOOTWORK MIX. Cop it immediately. | 8/18/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

DJ Shiftee Electro Boat House | Sam Zornow was just an ordinary mathematics wizard until his Bar Mitzvah money was put to good use and got himself his first set of turntables. Flash forward to 2010, and the 23 year-old is a two time DMC World Champion and a Harvard graduate. With a strong focus on scratching and blending indie and hip-hop into his electronic sets, DJ Shiftee is more than a blogosphere obsession. Few young DJs attain a top ranking, and the DMC honors place Shiftee in the same league as A-Trak and Craze, both of whom he considers amongst his influences. URB Presents: Blue Daisy Seen Through A Blue-Tinged Spectrum | With bass culture splintering all over the world, producers have been looking for ways to channel their sound in ways that were once unimaginable to listeners. Some producers went towards percussion, some with specific synthesized sounds, and others relied on atmosphere to distinguish themselves from the rest of the pack. In some unusual-but-wholly-sensible way, Blue Daisy fits that trifecta of sounds, going between rhythms, vibes, and beats with an ever-expanding soundscape that continues to grow with each release. With only two releases, he's been championed by DJs and producers all around, setting himself up for a massive year ahead. Lying between the borders of hip-hop, dub, and tech, Blue Daisy delivers a mix that is a mystery to all listeners, as a tracklist was "unavailable." It makes for an audible ride through the mind of a producer who is already one step ahead of most. Blue Daisy also had a bit of time to give us some info on his origins, his focus on spaced-out atmosphere and his future. | 2/2/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

The beginning of this year I completely changed my studio set-up, which allowed me to experiment more with my sound and just go crazy with it. I just want to take risks all the time, do something new with every beat I make. You’ve got an album coming out in the not-too distant future…any details on it; sound, flow and the label you’re releasing it on? It will be coming out on Hyperdub early next year. It’s just pure Ikonika. It really represents where my head is at the moment. I think it’s emotional and violent as well as colourful and approachable. What tracks have you been dropping lately that are staples in your set? I’ve been playing a lot of funky/house kinda of stuff from guys like Bok Bok, Kingdom, TRG, Deadboy and Joy Orbison as well as more dubstep orientated 140BPM stuff from Guido, Joker and Gravious. I¹m also dropping a lot of Juke. Favorite pre/post-gig activies? Drinking. Tell us about this mix you put together. It’s basically a load of tunes that have influenced me to make music. It has everything from Dilla beats to Dillinger Escape Plan to Madonna. To get to know more about Ikonika, check out my interview with her from a while back. Her newest release “Sahara Michael/Fish” is out now on Hyperdub. | 11/30/09 | Free | View In iTunes |
