The 8.8 magnitude earthquake was the most devastating Chile had ever experienced in the past 50 years. However, whenever and wherever disaster hits, there are Tzu Chi volunteers. One month after the quake, over 70 Tzu Chi volunteers from Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina, United States and Taiwan arrived in Chile. They reached out their helping hands to survivors along with local volunteers. As a result, low income population from San Jose are ending up on the streets. More than 7,000 homeless people live on the streets in this area, but only 1,000 local shelter beds are available on any given cold night. For the past 12 years, Northern California volunteers have been giving food to homeless people on the street. Since 2001, Tzu Chi volunteers started a homeless breakfast program every Sunday in downtown San Jose. For the hungry, everyday is a struggle to survive, a race to find adequate food. On February 8th, Tzu Chi volunteers launched the Work-For-Food program for residents of Port-Au-Prince by providing food in exchange for cleaning their devastating community. Also while in Haiti, Tzu Chi recruited local residents to join in global efforts. In their nation capital, life is gradually improving. An honest days work benefits a lot more than one person with a single shovel. In what lasted just 35 seconds, an estimated three million people were affected, one million are homeless, and sadly, over 200,000 are dead. Eight days after this devastation, TzuChi volunteers arrived in Port-Au-Prince. After the deadly earthquake in Haiti, Chia Ying immediately signed up for the Tzu Chi relief team and decided to go back to help the Haitians. Moreover our volunteers from Northern California have been working hard on fundraising for Haiti. In addition to fundraising, they have also partnered with a local television station to produce their own public service announcement, urging for donations. Also most of you may not be aware of Tzu Chi USA's online donation system, which was launched from Northern California after the Si Chuan earthquake in 2008. On November 21, 2008, Lisa walked out of the Sylmar Assistance Center with a cash card and one bamboo coin bank; on the very next day she brought the bamboo coin bank back to the center loaded with pennies. In five days, Lisa and Maile returned with 10 more loaded bamboo coin banks. We have recently constructed a new campus in San Jose. While part of the building is still under renovation, volunteers set up a temporary Assembly Hall with a temporary stage. On today's US TzuChi 360, we bring you to Northern California to see how these volunteers have designed the stage out of recycled lumber and other materials salvaged from recent renovations. All the planks and beams were cleaned and de-nailed in preparation for this future use. Going green can be found everywhere these days, including our stage. | 19 | VideoUSTC360_No06_iGemInBostonH264 | Greetings from US Tzu Chi 360, I'm Johnny Chang. iGem, which is the abbreviated name of International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition, has been a MIT-based event since the summer of 2005. This year, it's the first time that TzuChi University has sent a team to take part in the event, competing with over 110 top-notch universities from around the world. Their project, named the Midnight Apollo, has received wide recognition and a bronze medal. In addition, the students' stay in Boston has gained big support from local TzuChi volunteers. Instead of feeling alienated in a strange country, these students received a great deal of help and love from the members of Tzuchi, as a big family. After careful preparation, the big moment has finally come. Despite the fatigue caused by jet leg, the students have experienced a busy and exciting day. They are the first Tzu Chi volunteers in Atlantic City. Other than Las Vegas, Atlantic City is the second largest Casino in the U.S. Approximately 85% of the residents are employed within the casino industry. Woo HsiohYi and his wife Lin Ching Rong are, like many, also employed within the casino. To maintain their livelihood, Woo HsiohYi has been working as a chef in the casino for 12 years, and Lin Ching Rong has been a table dealer. In order to avoid the addictive gambling environment and limiting their contact with the lifestyle, this particular couple does not stay at the casino after work. In 2003, they were introduced to Tzu Chi by DaAi TV, and since then, their lives have changed dramatically. They became Tzu Chi volunteers and introduced Tzu Chis missions to the Atlantic City community. In California, 16 percent of disposed waste consists of food. This represents almost 5.6 million tons per year. Approximately 10 million tons of food is discarded annually in the United States. The US Department of Agriculture estimate that one-quarter of all food produced in the United States is wasted. In response to these alarming trends, Northern California Tzu Chi volunteers started a weekly bread rescue program in 2005. The volunteers bring fresh unsold bakery products to the needy and homeless in the San Francisco Bay Area. Utilizing a unique pickup and distribution network in various cities in the region, the bread program became a complete success. | 24 | VideoUSTC360_No03_Peng'sStory | On today's TzuChi 360, we will take you to New York to meet Tzu Chi volunteer Wang Pinghua and share with you her warming story involving Ah Peng, a prisoner serving a life sentence. 12 years ago, while Wang Pinghua was at Tzu Chi New York branch, she received a phone call from a prison asking for a volunteer to visit a prisoner named Ah Peng, who had been sentenced to a lifetime in prison. Unable to accept the sentence, Ah Peng had attempted suicide and a psychologist from the prison requested that someone fluent in Mandarin be allowed to visit Ah Peng, and to accompany him during his darkest hour.
