CleanLand of the Free, Home of the Brave | On this Memorial Day weekend, we remember all those who have given their lives in service to their country. In his sermon, Rev. Peter reflects on the internal struggle many of us carry trying to simultaneously support our troops and work toward the causes of peace. Reading Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae is popularly believed to have written it on 3 May 1915 (see 1915 in poetry), after he witnessed the death of his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, 22 years old, the day before. In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. CleanChance Encounters - Deliberate Choices: Interfaith Dialog as Spiritual Challenge and Hope for the Future | Rev. Ellis says: "The death of Osama Bin Laden, the turmoil in the middle east, and a recent event in which two American Muslim imams were removed from an U.S. airplane on their way to a conference on Islamaphobia, bring into sharp focus the critically important role of interfaith dialogue and understanding if peace is ever to be established in our world. Chance encounters sometimes provide learning, but how can we proactively advance understanding." This sermon is only available in audio format at this time. Rev. CleanWhat Doesn't Kill You... | The saying goes, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." During the month of May, when our spiritual theme is "Suffering and Endurance," Rev. Peter examines both the truths and the myths around this statement, and considers the role that a strong spiritual life plays in helping us weather the rough seas and seasons of our lives. Reading Sharing the Darkness by Sheila Cassidy (from Spiritual Literacy, p. 355) Rev. Peter Friedrichs Audio File: what_doesnt_kill_you_20110501.mp3 read more | 5/1/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanWho Are You? | The death and resurrection of Jesus is celebrated throughout Christendom today. In Unitarian Universalist churches, many struggle to find meaning in the Easter story. This Easter, Rev. Peter explores how we might find ourselves in this story, and what it might mean for how we live our lives today. Reading ~John 20:1-18 The Resurrection of Jesus Rev. CleanThe Hero's Journey | At this time of year we find the convergence of two important holidays in the Christian and Jewish calendars: Easter and Passover. This Sunday, on the date that Christians celebrate "Palm Sunday" and on the day before the Jewish festival of Passover, Rev. Peter reflects on the influence that Moses and Jesus had on their respective followers, and what it takes to be a hero for one's faith. Readings: The Book of Exodus, Chapter 12:1-14 Rev. CleanReclaiming Paradise | In keeping with this month's spiritual theme of "Environmental Stewardship," Rev. Peter considers the notion of "paradise." Throughout recorded history, humankind has dreamed of a place of beauty, peace and perfection. What's your vision of paradise? Where might your paradise be? How can we claim or reclaim that vision and how might it serve us in our lives? Reading In their book A House for Hope: The Promise of Progressive Religion for the 21st Century, Rev. John Buehrens and Rev. Dr. Rebecca Parker reflect on the question of ultimate meaning. Here is part of what they say. Rev. CleanThe Blink of an Eye | Rev. Peter reflects upon our relationship with our Mother Earth and what it means to be stewards of the Earth. What does it mean to "affirm and promote the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part?" Is environmental stewardship about living with less, or can it be a spiritual practice that enriches and deepens our lives? Reading This I Believe By Jennifer Oglesbee I am the girl who does not kill bugs. The girl who gets annoyed with her husband when he squishes a fruit fly. The girl who makes a secret pact with the spider in the corner that if he promises not to crawl on me during the night, I will pretend I never saw him. Rev. CleanWhat Did Malcolm X Believe? | Says Heather: "Malcolm X is one of those historical figures that we hear about during February as we celebrate African-American History Month. In Harlem, Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. intersects with Malcolm X Blvd. Over the years, he has been reduced to the man who said, 'By any means necessary.' Those are his words, but the media ran a successful smear campaign and took those words out of context. What did Malcolm X really believe and why do we need to remember him all year long?" Heather earned a Master's of Divinity from the Lancaster (PA) Theological Seminary in 2007 and is on a journey leading to ordination with the Unitarian Universalist Association. She was the keynote speaker for the YWCA of Lancaster Annual Woman2Woman Celebration in 2010. This sermon is only available in audio at the present time. CleanChutzpah and Hubris | As a faith that welcomes a diversity of people holding a variety of beliefs, Unitarian Universalism places a high value on being a place where almost anyone can find a home. How well do we live out this principle of hospitality? How open are we to differing points of view, and what challenges do we face in practicing what we preach? Rev. Peter offers his thoughts on the topic. Reading From Paul Rasor, Faith Without Certainty (introduction) Rev. CleanListening to Our Hearts | This Sunday, Rev. Peter is assisted in the worship service by the members of the Pastoral Care Team. As ministers focused on the emotional and spiritual well-being of our members, the Pastoral Care Team exemplifies our third Ends Statement, which says that "we joyfully answer the call to minister to one another." So what, exactly, is pastoral care? What do these folks do, and when might you avail yourself of their services? Rev. Peter will offer his reflections on "Listening to Our Hearts." Sermon Rev. CleanBy Putting It Into Words, I Make It Whole | The title comes from a line written by the British novelist Virginia Woolf in her autobiographical work, "A Sketch of the Past." In discussing her writing process, Woolf describes how we all are part of the work of art that is the whole world. Lenzi's sermon explores the ways in which storytelling can be a healing activity, connecting us to one another through time and space. CleanWorth Dying For | Unitarian Universalist minister Rev. Forrest Church once said that "religion is our human response to life, knowing that we will die." During this dark time of year, when much of the world lies dormant, seemingly dead, Rev. Peter takes a closer look at how we live, knowing that we will die. Is it possible, in the words of Tim McGraw's hit song, to "live like you are dying?" What would that look like for each of us? How might we "live a life that is worth dying for" (another favorite phrase of Forrest Church)? Reading Sigmund Freud "On Transience" from "The Grim Reader," pp 10-11 Rev.
