Unlimited Ammo 30: The current state of the Vita, Kickstarter and ‘Elder Scrolls: Online’ | This week, Scott, Max, Brian and Jen weigh in on the current state of the PS Vita, the Kickstarter bubble and TES Online. Max manages to make it an entire episode with out discussing Phantom Menace and the group manages to stick to the script. Yeah, we’re shocked too. PSA: This was recorded before Republique met its awesome goal and Silent Hill: Book of Memories was delayed. Again. Everything from Final Fantasy X to RAGE, they discuss the cliff hangers, the confusing and the outright missing endings. Also Star Wars. And some fighting game. Vita Voices: Piracy ignited the Memory Card pricing | Ewan is back after the adventures at South by Southwest, and it’s given him a chance to step back and look at everyone’s coverage of the PS Vita. Not just the main gaming sites, but the forums, message boards, comments, tweets, and Facebook updates. And something rather worrying has popped up. While everyone is complaining about the price of the memory cards, has anyone stopped to think about why they are priced that high? It’s not just a case of Sony trying to make money, but to protect the investment everyone is making in the Vita. Unlimited Ammo #28: Kicking @*$ and chewing bubble gum with Jon St. John | You’ve repeated his lines to friends, loved ones, and now former employers, but now it’s time to take a peek at the man behind Duke Nukem. That’s right, folks! Jon St. John joins us for the latest episode of Unlimited Ammo. You probably know him best as the voice of Duke Nukem, but what did he do before that? How did he land the role of a lifetime that is Duke Nukem? What was his most miserable experience in voice acting? What two groups does he refuse to do voice work for? All of these answers, as well as several lines delivered in Duke Nukem’s voice can be found in this episode. If that sounds a bit regimented for your tastes, don’t worry, the same unfocused atmosphere that’s present when associate editor Brian Shea hosts is very prevalent in this episode. Add Jon St. John and managing editor Jen Bosier to the mix, and you end up with Brian constantly forgetting to differentiate the voice actor from the character, Duke Nukem introducing Rick Santorum, and Big the Cat from Sonic Adventure delivering lines from Duke Nukem 3D. Please note: The language in this podcast is slightly more explicit than in previous episodes. DOWNLOAD | SUBSCRIBE (RSS) SPECIAL THANKS to Jon St. John for joining us for this episode! Unlimited Ammo #27: ‘Mass Effect 3′ Edition | At long last, Mass Effect 3 is here. Fans of the series have had March 6th, 2012 circled on their calendars for nearly a year now, and, as you’ve probably already heard, it was more than worth the wait. Due to the exclusive nature of being able to play Mass Effect 3 prior to launch, this episode sees Brian as the lone VGW staff member, as he discusses his experience with the title. He is joined by special guest, Max Parker of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, who has also reviewed the title. In this episode, Brian and Max talk Mass Effect 3 and debate how to go about reviewing games like it. Brian goes on a rant about Final Fantasy XIII-2, Max defends Star Wars: Episode I, and the podcast gets derailed more times than we can count. As an added bonus, hear Brian proudly proclaim that he won’t be giving Mass Effect 3 a perfect score, then proceed to slowly back down from that statement. Fear not, however, because it all leads back to Brian again mentioning his disdain for Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Please note: As you’ll hear, we were very careful about what we said and didn’t say during this episode. With that in mind, this podcast contains minor spoilers to the plot of Mass Effect 3. Unlimited Ammo #25: The Vita Episode (Part 1) | This episode of VGW’s Unlimited Ammo podcast is razor-focused: All Vita, no filler. The staff members responsible for covering the Vita launch assemble to discuss a wide range of topics. What is our most anticipated game? What about the make or break game for US? Is there enough buzz around the Vita this close to the launch? What marketing hurdles does Sony face in the US? Will consumers accept the Vita at its launch price point? What incentives does the public need to embrace Sony’s promise cross-platform gaming? The idea behind this episode is that after the Vita releases and we’ve had a few days to get our hands dirty with the hardware and launch games, we’ll re-assemble and re-evaluate our opinions, so stay tuned! Unlimited Ammo #18: Inside Video Game PR with Alan Danzis | Without PR professionals like Alan Danzis of Ketchum, a lot less Playstation titles would be in the hands of reviewers like us. But video game PR is much more than handling review requests and writing press releases. In this special episode of Unlimited Ammo, the VGW crew talks with Alan – who handles several Playstation titles including Uncharted 3 — at length about the ins and outs of game PR. Do gaming sites get blacklisted? How many copies of high-profile games get shipped out? Is there ever a slow period or “typical” day? What criteria is used to determine which outlets get review copies? What creative strategies are in place to promote games outside of the core gaming press? How important has Twitter become to the industry? This, and tons more discussion awaits in this double-length episode, including some of the games we’ve all been playing. If you’re thinking about starting your own game site, need advice on reaching out to PR, or just have curiosities, consider this a must-hear conversation. Prattle #7: Gathering the Magic | Tap this! What do you get when two relatively-inexperienced Magic: The Gathering players talk about the game? If one of those prattlers is game design professor Jeff Howard, you’re in for a deep discussion of magic and combat systems, symbolic correspondences, occultist grimoires, and our deepest-held assumptions about the nature of the universe. SPECIAL THANKS to Built By Snow (listen | buy) for the use of their song “Science of Love” for our official Prattle theme song. Fanboy Free!
VGW lives up to its tagline-- offering nuanced and diverse perspectives on gaming.
Well reasoned discourse...
Good format, good discussion, good length. Like a fine 40 ounce of Old English, it'll only get better with age.
True Gamers
Not a marketing filled pitch, this brings real opinions and is enjoyable to the ears. Rock \M/
