The intent was to put together a talk show built specifically around local news and event listings in an effort to show our stations ongoing support to our community, but also as a resource for us to explore a side of radio production that we had not personally explored before. Here we are two years later and we continue to learn more about this city. I am happy to officially call it home and act as a strong advocate for Winnipeg. Our ongoing goal for each episode of Wake Up Winnipeg is to seek out new opportunities, adventures and stories and continue to share to those our friends within the perimeter and those families and fans throughout the world. Before we got to the good stuff, we woke our listeners up to recent news and event happenings occurring within the perimeter, and beyond. Leading headlines this week, The Winnipeg police department has acknowledged that a gang conflict is taking place on our cities streets with 13 events occurring between June 14th through July 13th. To date, the Winnipeg Police Service acknowledges that over thirteen incidents have occurred as a result of the ongoing conflict, including the most recent attack at a tattoo parlor in the 100 block of Osbourne street. Ongoing investigations are continuing and have already lead to the arrests of a 23 year old male, and a 33 year old male in connection with the tattoo parlor attack that occurred on Tuesday. Both face numerous charges. The Police Service is committed to dealing with this conflict and in their efforts have already made approximately fifteen arrests so far for a variety of breaches, drug possession and outstanding warrants. The Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind members of the public that these series of events involve individuals associated to outlaw motorcycle gangs. The resolution of these incidents continues to be of the highest priority. Winnipeg Transit Director Dave Wardrop announced earlier this week that the Winnipeg Transit Busse's will be re-fitted with electronic fare readers to ensure that riders are paying the correct amount of fare. The move is part of a five year transit plan that was introduced by city council five years ago. Currently, the bus fare system relies on a paper-based system. The new machines are expected to be available by pre-paid smart cards which will be loadable by internet purchase or through a kiosk system which is expected to be released. The project will cost a total amount of 17 million dollars. Finally, ending off this week's headlines, Drivers in Los Angeles California are preparing today for what is being called "Carmageddon". A 10 mile stretch of interstate 405, will be shutting down for 53 hours starting at 7:00 PM This evening while crews begin a painstaking demolition project to expand and repair the iconic three-span box girder bridge. The Mulholland Bridge is an artery that links communities north and south of the Santa Monica Mountains. This will be the first time in fifty years that the section of I-405 will be virtually silent. The current bridge is 72 feet wide, 579 feet long and 80 feet high from the ground. The new bridge will be widened by 82 feet wide, and 608 feet long. 4,000 tons of concert are expected to be removed from the southern half of the bridge, leaving the northern half of the bridge remaining open for emergency access traffic. The exercise will continue next year with the northern side of the bridge. Resident Angeleno's are already being asked to avoid the section of the highway, with some calling it Carmeggedon. On a typical weekend in July, about a half a million vehicles use the section of the freeway to get to major locations such as LAX International airport, popular beaches, and major interchanges that connect with other sections of the interstate system. Michael Miles, a California Department of Transportation official stated the best thing Angelenos can do is stay home if you can, and not to drive if you have to" noting to be prepared, and to treat the closure as a disaster. Our guest was Mr. Tom Green, a Canadian comedian who has been active in the industry for over 25 years. Tom will be performing at Rumors Comedy Club in Winnipeg on May 26, 27th and 28th 2001. Tom started with stand up comedy in 1986 with a stand up routine, performing at various clubs around his home town of Pembroke and Toronto Ontario, including a few shows at Canada's famous Yuk Yuk's comedy club. While attending college in Ottawa, Tom hosted a radio show on from CHUO FM 89.1 FM from the University of Ottawa entitled "The Rap Show" until he eventually met up with friend and later co-host Glen Humplik to form "The Midnight Caller Show". In the early 90's Green was part of a Canadian hip hop group called Organized Rhyme and he rapped under the alias "MC Bones". In 1992, Organized Ryme released a single entitled "Check The O.R." which was nominated for the 1993 Juno's for Best Rap Recording, and had also won the Much Vibe Best Rap Video award in 1992. He later moved on to Rogers Television 22 in Ottawa as part of a public-access tv station where he formed the now famous "Tom Green Show" from 1994-1996. In January of 1999, be was picked up by MTV bringing his low-budget Canadian series to a new audience of viewers in the United States and around the world. In 1999 Tom wrote and produced "The Lonely Swedish (Bum Bum Song)" which quickly made it to the top of MTV's "Total Request Live" (TRL), and after five days of being number 1 Tom retired the song as he felt it was unfair to 98 degrees. Tom continued on MTV networks until late 2003, during which time he produced a one hour MTV Special on his Testicular Cancer treatment. Green continued to rise to fame after the cancellation of The Tom Green Show making cameo appearances on various films like Freddy Got Fingered and Charlies Angels, and even hosted The David Letterman Show, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and appeared in several commercials for the Canadian Cable Public Affairs Channel. In 2006, Tom Green announced he would be hosting Tom Green's House Tonight, a live talk show that would broadcast from his home in Hollywood Hills. On June 15th, 2006 the show aired with a partnership with ManiaTV.com. The show continued with Maniatv until January 2008 where tom launched TomGreen.com. The show continues to this day, and is credited as "the highest rated, longest running, and only talk show on the Internet". The show still airs on occasion at TomGreen.com. In 2009 Tom started doing stand-up comedy again with several shows in Los Angeles and a secret MySpace event in New York City. On November 10, 2009 Tom announced his first ever world stand-up comedy tour which started in 2010. On this weeks episode, we talked to Tom Green in anticipation of his Winnipeg stop over at Rumors Comedy Club from May the 26th, 27th and 28th. Though there are a few tickets still available for this show, Rumors comedy club is anticipating a sell out. During our exclusive conversation, Tom elaborated on being the first member of media to report on the death of Osama bin Laden by means of Twitter. He explained that he felt the main stream media was embarrassed that they had been scooped by The Tom Green show and posed the question to our audience as to why his tweet did not receive any coverage. Tom ended the show by announcing what fans could expect at his Winnipeg stop-over and expressed his honest appreciation and excitement about visiting Winnipeg for the first time. I started off the show by expressing my personal views on the cultural impact of 4/20 which is infamously known as a date to smoke cannabis. Though I do not participate in these types of activities, or support the habit itself, I expressed that I understand how important this date is for our student population, and how I do appreciate it's place in culture, though the act remains illegal in most countries. So, in a bold move to help others enjoy their day we put together this special episode. I featured vocals and audio from the 1936 documentary "Reefer Madness", a anti drug campaign video that was made in the United States in an effort to stress the effects of smoking Marijuana. Some feel the video goes to the extremes, and over-dramatizes the effects of smoking marijuana and see it more as a "comical" documentary rather than as it was it's originally intended to be seen as a "anti-cannabis" documentary.
