Wednesday’s Haul 3/10/10– Sweet Tooth & Marvel: 1985 | As if to show how rusty I am at podcasting, I spend an entire show calling one of Jeff Lemire’s characters in Sweet Tooth by the wrong name. Whenever you hear me call a character “Sheppard,” please substitute in “Jeppard” and just ignore my own silly error. So, I’m back after almost a year with a new Wednesday’s Haul podcast, talking about Alf Pogs, Mark Millar & Tommy Lee Edward’s Marvel: 1985 and Jeff Lemire’s Sweet Tooth. Click here to download the episode. Marvel: 1985 and Sweet Tooth Volume 1 are available on Amazon.com. Gutter Shots #11– Modok’s Love Life | I know that Ty and I talked about Jeff Lemire last week but I had to start this episode with more Jeff Lemire talk, focusing on his use of color in THE NOBODY and then we talk about about his SWEET TOOTH. Focusing on 20th Century Boys, we also dip a bit into Urasawa’s other manga, particularly Monster and Pluto. Gutter Shots #5– the episode Audacity didn’t want you to hear | I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, “podcasting is hard work.” Sure the pay is great and the chicks dig it but at the end of the day, it’s just you, a microphone and a program that decides to crash at the very end, taking everything that you just recorded and dumping it into 800 temp files that are precisely 6 seconds long. Thanks to such a program (Audacity, I’m looking at you,) we’re back after an unplanned week off. On this episode of Gutter Shots, we once again talk about EASTBOUND AND DOWN and try to figure out whether Kenny Powers is a loser or someone who we can sympathize with. We also talk about Scott’s Operation: Dump DirecTV that’s currently happening, the new movie MOON and a bit about WEDNESDAY COMICS from DC. The computer gods willing, we’ll be back next week, talking about the first three volumes of Naoki Urasawa’s 20th CENTURY BOYS. Gutter Shots #4– On Target | In this episode of Gutter Shots, Ty and Scott go to the shelves and pull out two crime classics; THE HUMAN TARGET and THE HUMAN TARGET: FINAL CUT. Ten years ago, Peter Milligan and artist Edvin Buikovic took a somewhat obscure Len Wein and Carmine Infantino creation out of the DCU and created a compelling story about identity, Los Angeles and faith. The four issue Vertigo miniseries created a John Woo-type movie on paper. Three years later, Milligan returned to the character in THE HUMAN TARGET: THE FINAL CUT, an original graphic novel that picks up where the miniseries left off and create a Hollywood tale where identity and fame are only as permantent as a Variety headline. Javier Pulido’s fluid artwork and Dave Stewart’s brilliant colors create a true tinsel town where everything has a golden glow to it. Vertigo may just now be launching a crime imprint but these two stories (along with 100 BULLETS) are the solid roots of Vertigo’s crime story offerings. Gutter Shots #2: Confidentially | Scott and Ty are back with another episode. The discussion begins with 1988′s Comic Book Confidential, a documentary looking at the evolution of comics. From there, they branch off and talk about the future of comic distribution and creation, arguing how comics are and aren’t like manga. Comic Book Confidential is available on DVD from Amazon or as a digital download from iTunes. Politics in Manga– a look at EAGLE THE MAKING OF AN ASIAN AMERICAN PRESIDENT | I’m back finally with a new episode and, as part of this month’s Comics Podcast Theme of Politics in Comics, I’m talking about Kaiji Kawaguchi’s excellent manga series EAGLE: THE MAKING OF AN ASIAN-AMERICAN PRESIDENT, a fictitious account of the 2000 Presidential race. But while it’s looking at a past race, it shares much in common with next week’s Presidential elections. To listen to the episode, click here. Wednesday’s Haul 625/08– Ty Nelson, J’accuse!!! | This episode was supposed to be a continuation of Duck Month with a thorough look at Marvel’s Essential Howard The Duck but, just as I was really getting into reading it, the book dissolved in my hands. So instead, I take a side track from Duck Month (don’t worry, it’ll continue with the next show) and talk about how do books live up to hype and expectations set for new comic book readers. Plus there’s some Watchmen, Sandman and Miracleman talk that borders on obsessive. At least, I hope it only borders and doesn’t fall into the psychotic range. Customer Reviews
One of my top 5 comic related podcasts
Scott has stepped in to fill a void. Although there are over one hundred comics related podcasts out there, Wednesday's Haul is the only one that I know of that regularly takes the time to detail what's in the comic shop this week. Scott then lets us in on what he's bought, what he plans to buy, and why. Scott's taste is exemplary and his reviews are succint and thoughtful.
I LOVE THIS PODCAST!!!
If you love comics, you NEED to be listening to Wednesday's Haul. Scott is very informative and insightful; I almost feel like I know him. Good stuff!
