Fireside with the Storytellers - Jan 25,2012 | The Storytellers Ken Quiet Hawk and Deborah New Moon Rising were married in 1966 during the height of very turbulent times in our world. After Quiet Hawk returned from his tour of duty in Vietnam, they raised two children, who in turn gifted them with grandchildren and now great grandchildren. Some of which are mentioned in some of their stories. Quiet Hawk and New Moon Rising are both of Abenaki descent. Both being from the Dawn land they felt most at home in a small wooded town in New Hampshire. Living by a quiet lake, they gather wondrous insight into the stories they tell. Quiet Hawk is an accomplished flute maker and photographer, whose Native wooden flutes and stunning photographs are played and viewed by many world wide. New Moon Rising is an award-winning artist best known for her realistic wildlife paintings on wild turkey feathers. Her birch bark rattles and crafts adorn the regalia of many from coast to coast. Together with all the stories and life’s lessons they have gathered, they are very popular storytellers at Pow Wows and Native gatherings. They have performed at concerts and schools throughout New England, as well as traveling the entire East coast to share the teachings of the native peoples. 2008 was the year that The Storytellers received their first Native American Music Awards “NAMMY” for the Best Spoken Word Recordings along with a nomination for the Best Male Artist. Tommy is also a masterful teacher and facilitator who combines expert knowledge of his subject with gentle humor. He is a faculty member at The Boston School of Herbal Studies eight years running. Tommy offers a wide range of services and programs—from individual consultations, Heart Mind Integration Method and distance healing, to courses, workshops, and retreats—all with a goal of bringing health and well-being to his clients and students. Since 1984, when a Seminole from Fl. introduced Tommy to traditional Native American ways, Tommy has been privileged to learn from Abanaki, Cherokee, Ojibwa, Cree elders and Lakota Elders. His primary teachers, Albert Tait and the late Don Cardinal, are Cree elders of Manitoba, Canada. In October 2009 Tommy was initiated into the Braveheart lineage of the Lakota tradition from Pine ridge S.D. Tommy has also studied the ancient wisdom traditions as taught in core shamanism with Michael Harner, and other shamanic schools of thought with John Ford, and Dana Robins, and Tibetan shamanism with Larry Peters. In February 2010 he was initiated into Pan Gu Shen Gong as both an instructor of the basic technique and a practitioner of the Pan Gu Shen Gong healing form. Michael grew up in a multi-racial neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. In all the diversity, his large family did what they could to ensure that they didn't become an invisible Indian. His Cherokee ancestors go back to the Trail of Tears and earlier. Prior to the forced removal many Cherokees moved to S.E. Missouri and N.E. Arkansas. Mike and his sisters and brother are only the second generation not to be born in S.E. Missouri. They have been told the stories passed down from generation to generation and encouraged to stay close to their culture. He is reminded by his mother and great uncle, and by the words of his grandmother and great aunt who have walked on, not to forget the stories and struggles of his people and all Indigneous people. From these stories are the basis of his music and songs along with his own life experiences. As part of those experiences, Mike has lived in many places thru his life,but now lives in the great north woods of northwest Wisconsin. Stan Hughes aka Ha-Gue-A-Dees-Sas, (Seneca for “Man Seeking His People), is a retired public school administrator with an extensive publication background including an Editor’s Choice Award from the International Library of Poetry. He worked many years as a consultant for the Indian Education Center doing parent education workshops and lecturing from coast to coast on the topics involved with teaching Native children. While serving on the board of the Urban Indian Center in Spokane, Washington, he was active in Indian Education issues in both Washington State and Oregon. Although not enrolled in a federally recognized tribe, both of his grandmothers were of Native American descent and his deceased father considered himself an Ah-oh-ZE (half-breed) of the Blackfoot Nation of north central Montana. Hughes was born on Yakama Indian territory in Washington State and grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota, considered sacred by the Sioux Nation. He is a Vietnam Era veteran serving in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1965. Since I was a little, young girl, I have always had visions and dreams of forthcoming events. I would tell my parents what would happen and my predictions would come true. Being a believer in God and Jesus, I knew that the "GIFT" I was born with is unique and special. I also have respect for all religions and believe that everyone looks at God/Creator in different ways. I have been doing readings for over 38 years and have been heard nation-wide on radio, as well as made special guest appearances for functions. I am heard on 94.7 WCSX in Detroit and 94.9 "The Coast" in Chicago. I have also worked with the Birmingham police on a missing persons case, were I was able to give direction and the whereabouts of the missing lady. I get words, images, visions, dreams, and feelings that I pick up along with dates, names, and numbers. I have found missing objects, too.
