Raising consciousness through clothing: An interview with Eileen Fisher’s Director of Social Consciousness | (http://womenofgreen.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Amy-Hall-head-shot-6-10.jpg) Eileen Fisher's personal core values are about helping women and girls find their voice and their personal path in life so that they can achieve what they were meant to achieve. She happens to do this this through designing and manufacturing clothing for women that are meant to unfold their inner and outer beauty. To me, this is the true purpose of business -- to raise consciousness through capitalism. Imagine what the world would be if all the CEO's of Fortune 500 companies did that same? In this podcast, I interview Eileen Fisher's (http://eileenfisher.com) Director of Social Consciousness (yes, social consciousness), Amy Hall. She has worked at the company for over 17 years helping Eileen and all the staff support the company's efforts to practice business responsibly. That includes activating the leader within for women and girls. "It starts with finding your voice -- and where we are with it now is what we call activating leadership. Activating that internal voice, that internal ability that everyone has to take charge, to take control of the situation, to be a leader in her own right. It doesn't mean they have to go off and run for public office. It means leading a household, leading a community, leading a cause, leading a belief," says Amy Hall. We call that at Women Of Green "Being the Change". How are you doing that in your world? A Big Thank You... To LOHAS Forum (http://www.lohas.com/) for inviting Women Of Green to this year's conference. This interview was recorded in Boulder, CO at the forum and is third in a series of sensational women who are being the change we need in the world right now. Be the Change We have just launched a new column on called “Be the Change”. And it features you! How are you being the change we need in the world? No act is too small. No movement is too minor. Making green meaningful to women – Show 49 | (http://womenofgreen.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Margaret-McAllister_color150.jpg) OK, we know that American women buy 85% of the products on the planet, and we know we're the keepers of the home and hearth, so why in the world are we buying so many products laden with toxic chemicals? Why are we voluntarily bringing them into our homes? This is a big disconnect for me. So I asked my guest, Margaret McAllister, an advertising creative director with a specialty in marketing green to women, this question. "The most important thing we, as marketers, can do is to educate women about what they're buying, why they're buying it, and to relate those products to her specific life," she said in this podcast. "If you really want to bring the message home to women, show them something that she specifically cares about. And there's probably nothing more precious to her than her children." I would agree. This self-professed cultural anthropologist shares with me more down-to-earth insights like this in this interview. If this topic intrigues you as much as it does me, listen in and, most importantly, join in the conversation. Love to get your take on this. About my guest Margaret McAllister is an award-winning advertising creative director and writer who, with the formation of Red Kite (http://www.redkitesite.com/), has turned her talents toward helping companies with market development through innovative new research and strategies designed to inspire preferred consumer behavior and ignite growth. Over her 30-year career, she has become an expert in corporate branding as well as interactive and traditional advertising, having worked on accounts such as Hewlett Packard, American Legacy Foundation, Buena Vista Pictures/Disney, and MADD. The American Advertising Federation, American Marketing Association, Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the Public Relations Society of America, Telly Awards, and other organizations have recognized her achievements. Margaret, along with her business partner Evelyn Olson Lamden, has spoken to national and regional audiences on gender marketing and marketing green to women. She has served on the American Advertising Federation’s Council of Governors. She is also creative consultant on a documentary film called “The Heart to Lead” which explores how women can use their unique leadership qualities to shift their own thinking and that of others to imagine a better world, and then go out and create it. A Big Thank You... To LOHAS Forum (http://www.lohas.com/) for inviting Women Of Green to this year's conference. This is It!: A conversation with Jean Houston – show 48 | (http://womenofgreen.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/jeanHouston-213x300.jpg) “We have come to the stage where the real work of humanity begins,” says scholar, philosopher and visionary, Jean Houston. "We’re in the great 'either/or' of history. Either we really blow it the next 20, 30, 40 years, and stay on the same path of same ol’ same ol’, or we consciously decide to rise to the challenges, the greatest challenge in human history. Other people thought they were 'it'. They’re wrong. This is the most critical time in history." This is how my interview with Jean begins. Boy, am I in for a ride, I think to myself. "And critical to the turning are women," she punctuates. I'm speechless. There are no words to describe the power, intelligence and heart of this cultural icon. When you are in her presence, every cell in you becomes alive. It's like they begin vibrating at a different frequency. Jean seems to know what you need to know and speaks to it, without you even saying a word. So, make yourself a nice cup of tea, turn off the cell phone, and listen to the words of this wise woman giving us a glimpse of where we're headed next. About my guest: Philosopher, scholar and cultural icon, Dr. Jean Houston (http://www.jeanhouston.com/) is one of the foremost visionary thinkers and doers of our time, and one of the principal founders of the Human Potential Movement. She has worked intensively in 40 cultures and 100 countries helping to enhance and deepen their own uniqueness while they become part of the global community. A prolific writer, Dr. Jean Houston is the author of 26 books, including A Passion for the Possible, Search for the Beloved, Life Force, The Possible Human, Public like a Frog, A Mythic Life: Learning to Live Our Greater Story, and Manual for a Peacemaker. A Big Thank You to LOHAS Forum (http://www.lohas.com/) for inviting Women Of Green to this year's conference. Are you a green parent? Green Mama shows you how – show 47 | (http://womenofgreen.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/ZR-and-GM-on-beach-2-300x199.jpg) For me, hands down, the biggest “going green” motivator was having a baby. From the moment I found out that I was pregnant, I watched what I put in my mouth like a hawk. Not to say that I didn’t cheat now and then – sneaking a really greasy French fry when no one was looking, but basically I knew whatever I put in my body, I put in my baby. At that time, “going green” wasn’t the rage it is today, so I didn’t have all the resources parents have at their fingertips now. That’s good news for parents. I think the challenge today is how NOT to get overwhelmed by it all. Here to help parents with that is Manda Aufochs Gillespie otherwise known as The Green Mama. She is the creator of TheGreenMama.com in Vancouver, Canada. A resource to inspire greener living for mamas and papas. She has put together the ten most effective green parenting habits (http://womenofgreen.com/2011/07/the-green-mama%E2%80%99s-ten-effective-habits-of-parenting/) for 2011. Listen up and see where you stand. About my guest: The Green Mama (http://thegreenmama.com) was founded in 2007 by Manda Aufochs Gillespie. It brings research, planning expertise, and project management skills to the mundane aspects of raising a family, maintaining a home, or growing a small business or school. Manda has worked in the sustainability field for more than 14 years as an ecological planner, project manager, consultant, and writer. Her project expertise ranges from helping establish Chicago’s first major green daycare (with over 120 children) to serving as the green consultant on a multi-million dollar ecovillage development project. She has also worked directly with hundreds of families, bringing her passion for research and sustainability along with her sensitivity to address her clients needs. Her extensive green experience and upbeat approach has led her to be described in the media as “the green guru” and “serious, but not absolute.” Her work has most recently been showcased on the television shows Save My Planet (on ABC’s Living Well network) and The Lazy Environmentalist (on HBO). Be the Change: We have just launched a new column on called “Be the Change”. And it features you! How are you being the change we need in the world? No act is too small. No movement is too minor. Is compassion the key to a truly greener world? An intelligent conversation with Dr. Renee Lertzman – Show 46 | (http://womenofgreen.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/renee-2-300x219.jpg) We know plastic water bottles are overwhelming our landfills and severely clogging mother earth’s pores, yet we mindlessly grab a bottle when offered. We know pesticide-free apples are way better for us, but still we eat the heavily sprayed ones. Here’s the dilemma: We say want green products and healthy foods, but we don’t back up our words with actions. The very actions, Dr. Renee Lertzman says, “...we know from an ecological, economic, political and spiritual standpoint would do us all a lot of good." So what’s holding us back? Why are we talking the talk, but not walking the walk? Renee has some answers. She’s a writer, researcher and communications consultant focusing specifically on the psychological dimensions of sustainability. Her article “The Myth of Apathy” laid out some concrete truths and insights into this dilemma, so I invited her on Women Of Green to share those with me. What I uncovered is a fresh, new perspective on what it means to be green and how to engage the mainstream consumer in really caring about the environment. A very cool interview so listen in! About my guest: Dr. Renee Lertzman (http://reneelertzman.com/) provides practical and professional guidance on sustainability communications, public engagement, and outreach strategies. Through consultations, presentations, and the development of written materials and online resources, Dr. Lertzman helps companies, organizations, and individuals incorporate psychodynamic and psychosocial dimensions into the planning, design and implementation of communications initiatives. Renee Lertzman’s work supports both private and public entities seeking to better understand the dynamics of behavioral change and responsiveness to sustainable practices, and speaks directly to issues of ‘traction’ by drawing attention to emotional, psychodynamic dimensions of sustainable initiatives. Her unique approach invites us to reframe conceptions of public outreach and engagement. So how green are you, really? – show 45 | (http://womenofgreen.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Susan-9843-200x300.jpg) OK, so you recycle, and yes, you buy organic when you can. You might even own a Prius. But how do you really measure up? Now there’s a way to find out. I discovered an online service that takes you through a series of eco questions and when you’re done, you know exactly where you stand. Even better, it gives you specific ideas and concrete advise on how to get even more ecologically sound and savvy in your life. And when you do, you get rewards. The creator of this site, Susan Hunt Stevens, is the Founder and CEO of Practically Green, an online service that motivates people to make healthy green changes at home, at work and in their community. I'm "Impressively Green" which is level 8 (there are two more levels to go). What are you? About my guest: Susan Hunt Stevens is the creator of Practically Green. (http://practicallygreen.com) Previously, Stevens spent nine years at The New York Times Company, most recently as senior vice president, digital for Boston Globe Media, where she ran Boston.com, one of the largest news and information sites on the web. She has previous start-up experience as co-founder and president of Abridge, which specialized in data-mining email for patterns and trends. Stevens began her career as a management consultant. She also serves on the boards of the Center for Women & Enterprise and Xconomy.com. Ms. Stevens received her MBA from The Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, where she graduated as an Edward Tuck Scholar; she also earned a BA from Wesleyan University and a graduate certificate in sustainable design from the Boston Architectural College. From asthma to aesthetics: How Zem Joaquin created an eco fabulous life – show 44 | (http://womenofgreen.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Unknown-300x300.jpg) When Zem Joaquin's two children suffered from chronic asthma, she took it in her own hands and undertook a major renovation in her home -- and her life. "I was frustrated by the fact that both of my children were constantly being hospitalized. I was up so many nights with a nebulizer in hand with crying children," she painfully remembers. "The pediatricians just kept saying that it was part of childhood, that many children have asthma." But after they recommended putting her children on long-term steroids, she said, "Enough is enough!" Shortly after that moment of truth, Zem was cleaning her house and she couldn't breathe. "It was like this light bulb went off." From that moment on, Zem committed herself to creating a healthier life for her family, "and that extended out to everyone's family," she said during her interview with me. Today, Zem is the Founder and CEO of Ecofabulous, a publishing and content development company dedicated to sustainability and style. "You should be able to express any aesthetic with consciousness." Zem proved that first-hand. After her renovation was complete, both of her children were free from asthma AND her home was gorgeous and toxic-free. See green doesn't mean drab. That is, when Zem's at the helm. About my guest: Zem Joaquin is the Founder and Editor-in-chief of Ecofabulous.com (http://ecofabulous.com/), a top resource for eco-friendly home, fashion, beauty, and lifestyle choices. She is the former eco editor at House and Garden, Domino, and 7x7 magazines and the Eco Lifestyle Expert for eBay (http://www.ebaygreenteam.com/contributors/zem-joaquin). Zem is also the Eco-Luxury Specialist for Planet Green's Alter Eco and regularly contributes to various other media, such as The Huffington Post. Mentored by William McDonough, Zem is a certified BuildItGreen (http://www.builditgreen.org/) design and strategy consultant and Cradle-to-Cradle (http://www.mcdonough.com/cradle_to_cradle.htm) enthusiast who helps companies and individuals create beautiful, smart, sustainable spaces and practices. Much of her penchant for superior design came from her years at Splendora.com (http://www.splendora.com/) and living in Milan, Paris and London, but her love for the earth can be traced back to her early upbringing on a Palo Alto commune. As the mother of two children, Zem is committed to improving the health, education and access to well-vetted information on sustainable products for all individuals. To that end, Zem is an active board member of Global Green USA (http://globalgreen.org/), Healthy Child Healthy World (http://healthychild.org/), Teens Turning Green (http://teensturninggreen.org/), and The Cradle to Cradle Institute (http://www.c2ccertified.org/). Grow a garden on your roof – show 43 | (http://womenofgreen.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Amys-Picture-300x173.jpg) Amy Norquist is one of the queens of the green movement. She has worked over twenty years in environmental research and education for many non-profits. With all her deep green experience, one day she had a thought, “I want to install a green roof on my home." And that’s exactly what she did. Little did she know what she was getting into. That great idea turned into a "hellish experience" as she puts it. So she was determined to make sure other people do not go through what she went through. Thanks to Amy, they don’t. Her company, Greensulate, is a leading edge provider of design, engineering, installation and maintenance services in green roof systems. But what exactly a green roof anyway? Find out in this podcast with Carolyn. You may be ripping up the tar before you know it. (http://www.livefromtheroof.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/amy-on-Green-Roof.jpg) About my guest: Prior to founding Greensulate, (http://greensulate.com) Amy Norquist spent three years as Deputy Director of the multi-million dollar Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries overseeing research and development efforts on major green and sustainable building initiatives. A guest lecturer at Columbia University and New York University Sustainability Working Group and the nation’s most highly respected spokesperson for the green roof industry, Amy’s accolades include being named a “Top 5 Start-Up” at the Opportunity Green Conference as well the winner of the 2010 Excellence in Design award from The Center for Environmental Innovation in Roofing. BPA in my soup? Mmmm goodness! A conversation with MomsRising’s Joan Blades – show 42 | (http://womenofgreen.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/joanblades-hires-230x300.jpg) Joan Blades is the President and Co-founder of MomsRising.org, a five-year-old organization that champions core motherhood and family issues. A million members strong, MomsRising works to support policies that help with family economic security like health care, paid maternity, family and sick leave, fair pay, early learning, and flexible work. One of the big issues that MomsRising takes on in a big way is toxins in our homes. In my interview with her, we talk about BPA in our canned goods (and ultimately in our blood stream) and flame retardants in our furniture (another toxic fabrication). "The problem with these chemicals is we can't see them. When people get ill or have problems with obesity or A.D.D., you can't draw a direct line from here to there," says Joan. But what she and her team at MomRising do draw on in a remarkable way is the engagement of their million members. "Corporations are disturbingly powerful. That's why we need to have citizen engagement. That's our best way to push back," she says. Joan Blades knows how to do that in spades. She was the Co-founder of MoveOn.org, an online activist organization with now over 5 million members. Now that's how you turn up the volume, women! About my guest: Joan Blades is a co-founder and President of MomsRising.org, (http://momsrising.org) a grassroots online activist organization that mobilizes millions of moms, dads and others; educating people about the problems facing mothers and families; and provide avenues for common sense solutions to those problems. MomsRising.org is modeled on MoveOn.org, the enormously successful and powerful online activist organization that Blades co-founded in 1998 with her husband, Wes Boyd, and their family and friends. Now an organization of more than 5 million online activists, MoveOn brings ordinary people back into politics by building electronic advocacy groups. With MomsRising.org co-founder and Executive Director Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Blades is also the co-author of The Motherhood Manifesto. Released on Mothers Day 2006, The Motherhood Manifesto makes the case that it’s time for a broad change in America’s support for mothers and families. In both public and private sectors, radical shifts are needed to make parenting and the workplace compatible. She is also the co-author with Nanette Fondas of The Custom Fit Workplace, a practical, inspirational guide for making the workplace more nimble, trust-based, and profitable. Thoroughly grounded in research and cutting-edge designs, The Custom-Fit Workplace makes the case for today's workplace to buy-in or risk falling behind.
