Beyond the Touchline
This podcast deals with the aspects of football that lie beyond the pitch. It goes into the political, financial and sociological aspects of the beautiful game with the typical high standards of reportage of the BBC. If you're looking for what makes the game tick, this is the podcast for you.
Everything BUT the matches
Football, aka soccer, is more than just a game and more than just a business. In many countries, the game has specific political and social consequences that just aren't found in North American sports. The goal of the World Football podcast is to examine these issues and they do it incredibly well. Their reporting during the 2010 World Cup was outstanding, looking into the history of football on Robben Island (the prison where anti-apartheid activists were held) to questioning the long term affects of the World Cup on the development of football in South Africa, to going farther afield and questioning what as happened to FIFA's stated commitment to building football in Africa. The latest episode now focuses on Brazil and how preparations are going for the 2014 World Cup. An absolutely fantastic show for grasping the larger significance of football to the societies in which it is played.
