Podcast Description
Mungo and Death Nougat are music projects by a guy named Bill in Ashburn, Virginia. This podcast includes various musical sketches, experiments, amusements, annoyances and revisions of same. I do this for fun. I do this because I hear music in my head. I do this to inspire others to create music. The Death Nougat pieces are usually very short and very fast (and would probably make amusing ringtones). The Mungo pieces are usually psychedelic, ambient, drone metal and/or industrial. Since I don't have the ability to change the "artist" field for a particular episode, Death Nougat tracks are identified as such in the Description. - iCompositions Radio

Vertigone v1 | Audio to MIDI conversion-based experiment. Original audio was based on Apple acoustic guitar loops played back at 6 bpm and fed through several delays. Neither the audio file nor loops are not being played back here - it's all MIDI. SW instruments are rock drum set, acoustic piano, French horn section and crotales. Title and artwork were inspired by seeing Vertigo last night, Bill - MIDI, effects 2/29 note - expand, slowly fold in elements, building to drone, possibly reintroduce some original audio. | 2/25/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Bill - keyboard, loop manipulation, effects Apple - loops 10/27/11 note - consider a segue between the solo and slow theme - probably the train synth pattern will do. Weave (sketch) | Thought I would take a little break from work. I set up a couple delay busses, and improvised a MIDI bass line, then played some simple MIDI percussion on top. Then played a melody on top, originally choosing acoustic piano and gamelan SW instruments to play simultaneously. On a whim, after playing, I then substituted electric piano and guitar effects SW instruments in their stead. Took out some notes I didn't like, but otherwise, I haven't corrected the timing. Bill - keyboard, effects 7/28/11 note - tighten timing and extract melody and put into some standard song form. | 7/27/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

UnAuthorized | Three improvised keyboard parts (one improvised on top of the other). Unlike what I often do, I did not create a pulse track first, but did that last. Then I took pulse track and used it as the basis for the bell MIDI track. Then copied and pasted part of first improv for intro, which is played on a single synth. Bounced result to audio file, converted the audio to MIDI. Created two MIDI tracks, Steinway piano and Cimbalom. SunnDazed Memories | Until about 90 minutes ago, this was a piece for acoustic guitar and piano. But then the software amps drew me into their clutches and it changed. The acoustic guitar part became the ethereal organ, slowed the track down, deleted the piano part and replaced it with the wash of guitar. Drum loop is self-made. Bill - keyboard, loop, effects 5/29/11 note - see how it sounds with guitar attack muted, play around with drum loop. | 5/8/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Vigil v1 | Improvised the "guitar" track (on keyboard) with all the effects in place, edited it a bit to get rid of a few notes I didn't like towards the end, and then played the synth horn part on top. I then added more effects to the ending. Bill - keyboard, effects 5/28/11 note - tighten timing, add percussion, work on EQ, audio levels. | 5/7/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

The Naught Before | Experiment using the audio to MIDI Groove Template function in Logic. I played the repetitive bass line on my guitar (it's not a loop, but it may as well be). Using that as the basis of the audio track I then performed the audio to MIDI function, and then removed all the MIDI above a certain velocity, so I think most of what I was left with was Logic's attempt to catch the guitar fingering slurs and possibly some sympathetic vibrations. There are some additional guitar and keys lurking in the background. I removed most of these parts before bouncing this down to focus on the bass line and the cimbalon as the piece progresses. I like the way this turned out. I find it pleasingly hypnotic in one way, disarmingly sinister in another. Bill - guitar, keyboard, effects 2/17/11 note - If I update this, re-incorporate some of the keys that appear in the beginning later in the piece to add some color; continue to explore cimbalom with bass some more in further pieces. It's an interesting sound. 2/18/11 note - change cimbalom at end, it's obscuring change in bass line. 12/31/11 note - check audio levels | 2/16/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Grave Robbers From Outer Space (v4) | There are 7 zombies in this, each with his/her own sax. Sometimes they work together, sometimes they mimic each other after listening, sometimes they stumble blindly (and deafly). Now using software MIDI saxes from EastWest library, played from keyboard, so saxes herein are not as reliant on my manipulation of original Apple klezmer loops. Augmented Criswell voice with lessons learned from VoiceTronics Medley 2 (archived) from a couple of days ago. Criswell - voice Ed Wood, Jr. - text Bill - keyboard, home-made percussion loops, audio loop manipulation, effects Apple - klezmer audio loops 8/8/11 note - work on horn section and percussion some more and audio mix. | 2/8/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

66 |
Option L (v1) | Woodwind, piano and percussion. I started Logic in the wee hours thinking of Jimmy Page. This has little to do to do with Jimmy Page. Bill - keyboard, effects 11/22/10 note - keep distortion but lower audio level, reconsider use of piano once drone kicks in, consider using in conjunction with "Window" which uses similar timbres. 12/28/10 - edit, possibly quantize. 2/14/2011 - Bonzo? | 11/15/10 | Free | View In iTunes |
|
67 |
Depth of Character v1 | Just playing around on the keyboard, exploring drones and rhythms. When I get back to this one, I'll need to vary the velocity on the keyboard drums - I have a tendency to hit the keys too hard when "drumming" so all the beats end up the same velocity. This is a companion piece to "Altared States". Bill - keyboard, effects 10/10/10 note - bring drums forward in mix by moving everything else back and making the drums more dry. Revisit extraneous electronic cymbal hits. Put in varying velocities on drum beats, putting consistent emphasis where needed (ONE and THREE and duh-duh BEAT). | 10/9/10 | Free | View In iTunes |
|
68 |
Lobe (sketch) | This began with me wondering what it would sound like if I played the keyboard and had different delay patterns in the left and right channels. I decided to title the piece "Lobe" after the lobes of the brain. After setting up the delays, I then selected a synth and started playing. After that, I played around with panning so that the each delay moves around in the stereo field. Then I added a couple of bass notes near the end of the song via the editor so that the song pattern would be more repetitive. Song art based on public domain photo in wikimedia commons. I searched for "antenna" because of the relationship between "lobe" and "antenna" and the vaguely radio transmission-like quality of some of the keyboard parts. Bill - keyboard, additional MIDI, effects 9/17/10 note - split keyboard track into bass / non-bass parts. Do processing of these split tracks separately. Turn this keyboard improv into a tighter song structure. Make song art more abstract (consider posterize filter). 10/11/10 note - consider making this a two parter - a loose intro (like this) and a tighter version with electronic drums. | 9/16/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

ReBirth (2010) | Changed some notes, timing, effects, MIDI velocities and expression, amp settings, song art, de-looped repeated parts .... Bill - keyboard, additional MIDI, effects 9/15/10 note - consider countermelody in 2nd half. Revisit bass part. | 9/14/10 | Free | View In iTunes |
|
70 |
A Matter of Time (v2) | Took previous sketch. Slowed down from 150 bpm to 30 bpm. Added organ (my oblique Larry Young note in previous song page). Changed amplifier. Took out about half of content. De-looped bass and drum parts. Changed space ambience. Would be nice to have drone metal and noise genres. Oh well. Dedicated to Neil Young, Lou Reed, Stephen O'Malley, Masami Akita and Larry Young. I find the effect of finding shapes in distortion and feedback similar to finding shapes in clouds. Only louder. Bill - keyboard, effects 9/26/2010 note - consider adding orchestral part I started today. 1/11/2011 note - Edit down; consider transposing at least part to lower octave, revisit drum/bass parts, consider specific software instruments, especially bass and kick drum. | 9/8/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Perpetual Motion (Sketch) | Ever get an idea that you think you've heard elsewhere, but aren't sure and can't identify it? The intro/middle 8/outro part (minus the electric piano) is similar to something from some band like Blur, Suede, the Verve or Oasis ... I think .. or maybe Spriritulized. If someone can identify it, please do, because it's driving me nuts. (And if it's too close to the original part, I'll rip it out.) Hypnagogia (v2) | Vocal experiment. Differences since last version - Edited into song form ABACAADA. Split signal on main vocal on parts B, C and D so that everything above 750 Hz is being sent through a spectral gate and flanger. Sending complete signal of vocal loop through the same spectral gate/flanger. Played around with flex time here and there on the main vocal to facilitate some edits in some cases and just for the heck of it in other cases. Adjusted EQs and volumes. I'll Have a Double | The same music as in "That's Nice, Dear", using much different timbres. Art : I composited two photos I found at wikimedia - one, a night club; the other, a bald male chimp (not Charles Bronson). ElseWhere (NoWhere Edit 1) | Cut out out 60% out of NoWhere (4 minutes of which I may reuse in another piece); repeated opening section at the end. I was considering adding percussion, but as I was listening to this, I liked the lack of percussion. Bill - keyboard, home-made loops 2/28/10 note - my next version of this will have percussion and be shorter. 3/17/2010 notes - Cut in size - no more than 3 minutes, add percussion (at least snare, cymbal), replace loops with varied parts | 2/8/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

NoWhere (Sketch) | On my hard drive, I had a keyboard part doing a simple new wave/ska guitar rhythm that I created last month called "NoWhere". This evening I created organ and bass parts to go with it. The loops are laughably monotonous, but I find them catchy and, after a while, the repetition becomes hypnotic, which is an effect I like. I knew I wanted an analog synth sound to go with these. So I auditioned various Logic synths, found a suitable one and took off its tape delay effect to make it less spacey sounding. I had no melody and I sat down at the keyboard with these loops playing. I hit "record" and started playing. Think of the following meandering audio trip "Bill's journey to find a melody". I wanted to share this, because despite its length, I think that it has a naive charm that's likely to be lost once I find parts in this I want to use for a repeating melody. Bill - keyboard, homemade loops 3/17/2010 notes - Strip away most parts I used in Elsewhere, get rid of loops, edit these parts - if useable - into song form, create new harmonic environment, most likely ambient and take advantage of brass-like sound of lead. If the remnants of Nowhere minus Elsewhere are unusable, so be it - move on. | 2/7/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Knell (Sketch) | Warning - the m4a file takes a while to download to the QT player. While waiting for an email this morning, I decided to tune my guitar, select some effects, create a guitar loop, alter its timing and then play guitar on top of the loop. Post improv, I named the piece "Knell", created the artwork while listening to the first playback. deleted the last note of the improvisation, then applied some noise reduction between 2:20-3:30. And then spent a while bouncing this so that the mp3 file was small enough to upload here. Got it down to 19.1 MB. I still could not upload the 19,1 MB mp3 and 18.5 m4a, So on my fifth attempt at upload, it's just the m4a file. Am still waiting for that email. Maybe tomorrow. :) Bill - guitar loop, guitar, effects 2/28/10 note - my next version of this will be much shorter. I may split it up into different pieces. | 1/11/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Police Story - Season 1 | Death Nougat is going to use Logic for a while. Template for a series of experiments to explore Logic 9. Hard Rules: Each piece must use these loops in the same sequence. Each piece must be named after an episode of the first season of the US TV Show Police Story (1973-1979) Each piece must be 30 seconds long. The one MIDI track may have its instrument changed. Tracks may be muted. Soft Rule: The intro and outro should remain the same. I'm making this rule soft since there may be cases where the outro changes due to effects applied to some of the tracks in the middle section. | 9/21/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

The Dark Sun (Revised) | On the advice of RC Andrews, I cleaned up the the sound a bit from the previous version. I removed some reverb plug-ins and delay plug-ins in the channel strips. On a whim, I also extended one section by a bar, trimmed the ending and updated the song art. Since there is no "space rock" or "psychedelic rock" genre, I have placed this under industrial and metal. Softly (Sketch) | 1 of ? I thought I'd edit some recent improvisations before going on vacation. When I get back, I'll probably rue them all. I normally cherry pick phrases from my keyboard meanderings from which to build more structured music. In this case, I cut up and reorganized pieces of the improv so there was some dramatic structure to this, but there are no repeating sections. I picked Classical for the genre, but my keyboard skills are such I may as well have picked Childrens. Like always, criticism welcome. I am particularly interested at this phase in feedback on melody/rhythm/tempo. Bill - Keyboard 2/28/10 note - my next version of this may not be much more than a couple of notes here and there and remastering. | 7/20/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

The Leak | The dread of every property owner. Inspired by a sequence of delays that amusingly make the drum track sound like water leaking. Aspiration | Re-arranged, remixed and remastered previous sketch. Anything that sounds like a loop is a delay effect. The percussion tracks evolved directly from the melody tracks (more easily heard in the sketch version), all of which I applied some delay effect to. Since there are two changes of tempo during the piece, there are moments when the percussion disappears - I did that so that the delayed percussion hits are not stumbling over each tempo change. Bill - keyboard, effects 3/17/2010 note - fix percussion on tempo change areas, revisit arrangement - should B section be the lead?, check stereo balance, audio levels, EQ (especially low end). | 6/7/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

Church of Lost Dreams (Sketch) | I felt creative this evening, so rather than work on any of my unfinished pieces, I created a new one. This has been constructed in such a way that, on repeat, it can be listened to as one continuous piece. Two items of interest are that all distortion was achieved without pushing any audio level into the red and that while I was playing the distorted part on the keyboard, I was also swatting away pop-up error messages telling me that the audio and MIDI were out of sync. I've placed this under both ambient and metal. Any loops herein are self-made. Bill - keyboard, loops, effects | 5/14/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

Also, when I was originally working on this, I took parts which eventually evolved into Arabesk. Although I didn't have the original mp3 today (I did find an odd early mix with guitar and drums that I had forgotten about that I might post in the future), I did have a version of the piece that I provided Mystified (the mixes might be slightly different) from which I bounced this mp3. Ned's Nasty Habit | Previously unreleased Death Nougat track from August 2008. Why was it unreleased until now? Immediately after I first heard this experiment I thought to myself : This sounds just like a bunch of loops thrown together; the sort of thing someone who has never used a loop or heard a piece of music might do. And like all Death Nougat experiments with which I hear no redeeming qualities, I filed it away rather than posting it. And then upon hearing it again for the first time this week, I fell in love with it for that very reason that it sounds so naive, plus the added attraction that it sounds like the sound track of a silent film stuck on repeat playing from a tinny speaker while someone tries a succession of weapons to destroy the contraption it's playing from. The artwork? I modified a picture of a lamp to go with the title of the piece (which I made up before I created the music). Given this artwork, consider the music to be the soundtrack to Ned's mistaken attempts to use this oddly shaped item to assist him in indulging in his nasty habit. This description is longer than the music. :) | 2/15/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

Counterproductive Beliefs (Sketch) | May 2006 sketch. IIRC, the first version of this was just the ostinato in the background. Then I thought to myself, What if I added rock drums, bass and a lead instrument?. I constructed the drum part in a MIDI editor and played the guitar-sounding keyboard solo in two passes (roughly halfway through the track the second solo starts). Where you do not hear the lead after the drums start, I removed parts of the solo because I didn't like it. Like all I do, this piece is still an evolving work-in-progress. Something Different (Sketch) | From November 22, 2008, here is Something Different. Ever run across something on your hard drive you don't recall creating? This is one for me. Because of its date of creation and use of my voice, I suspect I created this odd, psychedelic, industrial soundscape in response to particledot's music for insomniac narcoleptics, which also sampled my voice. I hear the signal break up in places, implying clipping, I was tempted to trace down the source of the noise (probably an extreme MIDI parameter on one or more of the effects plug-ins - it's not volume or velocity), but decided to keep it in ... for now. Any loops herein were created by me. The resemblance in the artwork to pharmaceutical pills is purely intentional. No animals were harmed during this production. I find this more entrancing at a low volume. Like everything I do, it's a work in progress. Satisfying Fate (Primordial Sketch) | If only I could play this quickly - this is an improvisation from 2006, sped up to 360 bpm. I came across this little oddity a few minutes ago in my quest to organize my hard drive and update various Logic and GarageBand files. I like in general how it reminds a bit of me of the (far, far better) player piano pieces by Conlon Nancarrow. There are a few phrases in the second half that I'll probably incorporate into other music. I find it very illuminating how speeding this up greatly exaggerates both its comical and dramatic aspects. Bill - keyboard 3/17/2010 - this is oddly mesmerizing ... not quite like a train wreck, fix timing, trim, consider parts to be reused elsewhere | 1/10/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

Crash (Sketch) | An improvised companion piece to Sponto Afrilia, recorded in 2005, around the same time as Sponto. An alternate title for this is "Spaced". (The original GarageBand file is titled "Crash"; the original song art was titled "Spaced".) My thinking in the spring of 2005 was that I would create a psychedelic jam, made up of various sections. Sponto was one section; this was another, now available for the curious, in all its improvised, naive enthusiasm. music for insomniac narcoleptics (disco mix) | What do you get if you take Mungo's recent 'Dark Shimmering' and 'Motherless Child' tracks, add 5 theremins, a music box sent by Mystified but sonically mangled to resemble something else and some subtle delay effects. You get this music - which is 13.5 minutes of pure pleasure and perfect for the discerning insomniac narcoleptic I did try to follow feenix's advice and take this music to hell, but I had difficulty getting outside the borders of Scottsdale AZ (but that is close enough to hell to get a similar effect) Vocals - Mungo Guitar and effects - Mungo Theremins - particle Digital Delays - winston smith thank you cat for the music box sounds | 12/3/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Sempiternal | What may sound like midi loops is the result of various delay plug-ins. Motherless Child (1924 Version) | The original performances are actually from 2005; remixed and remastered today. I applied the same 'old soundtrack' production technique that I applied to RePose. In this case, I think that the production technique had the benefits of masking some of the pops that occurred since I wasn't using a pop screen, influencing the listener to accept some of the imperfections that are evident, and emphasizing the non-modernity of my quirky vocal stylings. RePose | A new version of a piece from 2005. (From looking the song art, I guess one could call this 'Mungo's Blue Period'. ;)) This has been EQ'd differently from the version I released last spring. Loops herein are self-made. Blue Fungus | This is music from and for a Blue Fungus. This is music I didn't finish last spring that I worked on again this morning. I've placed this in both ambient and industrial. Any loops in here were created in the more popular than ever 15/8. The bpm varies from about 30 to about 200. If you do dance to this, please move your furniture and your floor out of the way. Thank you and have a nice day. :) Bill - keyboard, Ultrabeat loops, effects 1/11/2011 - Check EQ, stereo balance | 3/22/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Now You Say I Need My Meds | Death Nougat experiment, triggered by exposure to a particularly annoying person that thankfully I only met on the internet. From 14 February 2006. | 12/27/07 | Free | View In iTunes |

Tuesday Morning | Improvisation from 25 December 2007, mixed 27 December 2007. Photo from driving vacation October 2004, somewhere in New Mexico (I think), modified 27 December 2007. This resembles, timbre-wise, some of the more psychedelic Death Nougat pieces, one of which I'll post after this. Bill - keyboard, effects 3/17/2010 note - LOL. See if I can extract some melody from this. If I can, create a new file with a new song name. | 12/27/07 | Free | View In iTunes |

Meditative Blues | This morning I was curious to hear what Meditation Blues (now archived) would sound like without the kick and snare drum hits onto which I played my keyboard improvisation. I find I like this one better. Bill - keyboard, additional MIDI, effects 3/17/2010 note - check EQ, audio levels, consider replacing software amp, rename this, take out "monk voice" synth, fix cymbal hits and consider changing drum set. | 12/17/07 | Free | View In iTunes |
