Episode #182 Don Stewart and Jaeson Parsons - Feb 22,2012 | Tonight on You Served Radio we will be joined by doctor turned artist Don Stewart. Don received his BS degree in Biology and Art at Birmingham-Southern College in 1981, paying his way with a nightclub act as a comic ventriloquist. Initially he enrolled in art classes as a respite from the rigors of premedical studies. Soon, however, he was exposed to the process of composite imagery, and began exploring techniques in ballpoint drawing. Don continued to pursue artistic interests as a hobby during medical training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After receiving his M.D. in 1985, Dr. Stewart moved north to Minnesota, to complete an internship in surgery at the Mayo Clinic. The lifestyle of a surgical resident proved, however, to be at odds with his creative side. By years end, Don opted to discontinue his medical studies, after accepting awards for both short fiction and poetry, and publishing his first two composite drawings. He has since worked as a graphic artist, writer, and creative consultant through his company, DS Art. Recently, Don has completed a Marine Corps themed composite drawing and is now working on an Army themed composite drawing. During the second hour we will be joined by Jaeson Parsons of Graffiti of War. Jason “Doc” Parsons was born in Chicago, IL. Before joining the military he spent ten years in the global derivative markets, ending his career as Director of Institutional Sales for a Chicago brokerage firm. In June 2005 he joined the Army as a Combat Medic; by November he deployed to Ar Ramadi, Iraq with the 54th Engineer Battalion. In 2009 he was medically discharged (honorable) and now he is a full time student at West Virginia University. Doc is an original collaborator and director of operations for the Graffiti of War project as well as the Vice Chairman of the Graffiti of War Foundation. | 2/21/12 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode #161- Maj Rusty Bradley, Vic Freudenberger - Sep 28,2011 | Tonights first guest will be Army Maj Rusty Bradley, author of Lions of Kandahar. One of the most critical battles of the Afghan War is now revealed as never before. Lions of Kandahar is an inside account from the unique perspective of an active-duty U.S. Army Special Forces commander, an unparalled warrior with multiple deployments to the theater who has only recently returned from combat there. Southern Afghanistan was slipping away. That was clear to then-Captain Rusty Bradley as he began his third tour of duty there in 2006. The Taliban and their allies were infiltrating everywhere, poised to reclaim Kandahar Province, their strategically vital onetime capital. To stop them, the NATO coalition launched Operation Medusa, the largest offensive in its history. The battlefield was the Panjwayi Valley, a densely packed warren of walled compounds that doubled neatly as enemy bunkers, lush orchards, and towering marijuana stands, all laced with treacherous irrigation ditches. A mass exodus of civilians heralded the carnage to come. In the second hour will be Vic Freudenberger who is a Marine Veteran of WWII and Korea. Vic joined the Marines 73 years ago this month. While in the Marines, Vic found out they began experimenting with Paratroopers because of the success the Germans were having pre-war and then in 1940. The producer of the album is George Daly former VP of Columbia Records and Elektra Records. The album is titled "Hero" and the first single release is also the title track "Hero". The record label at first wanted to do a more traditional music video for "Hero" but the band members decided they wanted to dedicate this music video to the soldiers who sacrifice for their country. They felt this could be the rare opportunity to entertain people with a video on MTV an VH1 and across the internet with a real message. A video that would raise peoples awareness about the sacrifices thousands of soldiers are making for our country. They are raising funds to create the video through kickstarter.com and other grassroots efforts. In the second hour we will talk to Micah Clark, the founder of Camp Patriot. Camp Patriot exists to take Disabled U.S. Veterans on outdoor adventures. The task is monumental. Today, there are over 2.3 million disabled veterans in the U.S. The number of disabled men and women veterans is growing with each day the war on terror continues. These brave veterans sacrificed much in order to ensure our safety and freedom. All of these veterans had dreams about the future, but many of those dreams were lost due to injuries suffered in the line of duty. Outdoor activities that they hoped to do in the future have vanished due to their disability. We want to thank these veterans by showing them that with the right help, they can again enjoy the great outdoors. | 7/26/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

You Served Radio - Street Vets Documentary - Feb 23,2011 | Issac Goeckeritz - The statistics are staggering: Over 100,000 United States Veterans are homeless every year and many of these men fought several decades ago during the Vietnam Era. Beginning in the early 1990’s, dozens of homeless veterans programs have come into existence across the United States. Street Vets is the culmination of a year-long chronicling of the life and times of ten men living at one of these programs: The Homeless Veterans Fellowship - a transitional housing program aimed at assisting homeless Veterans into self sufficiency. The film provides a remarkably candid view of the long-term scars of war and personal tragedy that, in many cases, have led to alcohol, drug abuse…and life on the streets. In a powerful one hour documentary, award winning filmmaker Issac Goeckeritz takes viewers into the largely invisible world of homeless veterans and the difficult, but hopeful, pathways home. In May 1979, Scruggs took $2,800 of his own money and launched the effort. Gradually, he gained the support of other Vietnam veterans in persuading Congress to provide a prominent location on federal property somewhere in Washington, D.C.. After a difficult struggle, Congress responded and the site chosen was on the Mall near the Lincoln Memorial. | 11/9/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode #9 - Toby Nunn, Emily Custer & Baghdad Pups - Oct 23,2008 | Zach Johnson is an Army NCO and Iraq veteran. He is also a great writer and musician. During this show, Zach will come on to talk about his music in a combat environment and share a few songs he's written. You can also check out his MySpace page in the meantime. Emily Custer began piano lessons at four, and added violin and voice instruction over the next few years, she soon discovered her ‘bent’ toward composing. By five years old, she was singing harmonies with any song, always switching from part to part. As an adult, it was rather humbling for her mother to play a simple little song on the piano and have her then six year old daughter proceed to add an intricate obbligato part, totally ‘on the fly’! Young Emily did not begin writing down the tunes she composed until she was in third grade. Emily recently composed and sang the patriotic tune "Thank You", which I'll play during the show. Operation Baghdad Pups is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting troops in bringing home pets they've come to know and love that were strays in the combat zone. They do not just save animals; it also brings comfort and peace of mind to our troops. The SPCA International team has had the pleasure of getting to know many of the animals we have rescued. They are smart, resilient, inquisitive, playful and we believe they are grateful for the opportunity to live without fear in the United States. Episode #6 - In A Time of War - Oct 02,2008 | This week's guest is Mr. Bill Murphy Jr., author of the recently released book, "In A Time of War". Think "The Long Gray Line" for the war on terror. The book's subtitle says it all: "The Proud & Perilous Journey of West Point's Class of 2002." Watch the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWtnPIcLmns. | 10/2/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode #5 - Wrong About The Right - Sep 25,2008 | On this week's show, we'll talk to S.E. Cupp, author of the book "Why You're Wrong About The Right". Ranging from concrete facts to laugh-out-loud commentary, Newt Gingrich, Al Leiter, Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham, Ted Nugent, Shelby Steele, Tony Stewart, Glenn Beck and even Bubba the Love Sponge—along with dozens more—provide the ammunition to shatter the most shocking claims about the Right. Plus, I'll talk about the craziness of military life and whatever comes to mind. I may even just let my hair down, what the high and tight left behind, and just talk for the sake of talking. | 9/25/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Finale Salute - 18 Sep 08 - Sep 18,2008 | My guest for today's show is Pulitzer Prize winner for Featured Writing, Jim Sheeler, author of "Final Salute: A Story of Unfinished Lives" which chronicles the lives of several CAOs, Casualty Assistance Officers, as they go about the somber business of notifying family members of their servicemembers' deaths and how they cope afterwards. The book has been hailed as both "required reading" and an "act of national service" to more profane things by the anti-war crowd as a "pro-war" book. In the d | 9/18/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

September 11th Memorial Show - Sep 11,2008 | Today's show will be a two-hour special from 1800-2000. My first guest will be 1SG Troy Steward, New York National Guard First Sergeant and Afghanistan Veteran. Troy is also a military blogger who documented his Afghanistan deployment on his site, Bouhammer (www.bouhammer.com). We will discuss the meaning of military service in a post 9/11 world and his thoughts as a New Yorker and Soldier. I'll also have David Bellavia, author of "House to House", former Staff Sergeant in the United States Army and nominee for the Medal of Honor (as well as a special guest at the State of the Union a few years ago). And I consider him a friend!! My third guest will be Retired Marine Corps Major General Fred Haynes. MG Haynes was a member of Combat Team 28, the unit that raised the flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. A Captain at the time, MG Haynes is the last surviving officer in CT28 intimately involved in planning and coordinating all phases of the Team’s fight on Iwo Jima. It's an interview you won't want to miss!! | 9/11/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode #2 - A Soldier's Courage - Sep 04,2008 | A lot of great stuff going on this podcast. I will have an interview with Janis Galatas, author of "A Soldier's Courage" and spouse of wounded Iraq veteran Norris Galatas! Janis is the quintessential troop supporter who does so much for others while dealing with Norris's own fights through the military health care system. Oh, and she absolutely LOVES horses!! I had to reschedule with Retired Marine Major General Fred Haynes due to scheduling conflicts. He is at the Republican National Convention this week and instead of a recorded interview, I want to bring him on live. So he will participate in our Sep 11th show. This is also our first show at our regularly scheduled time of 1800 on Thursdays!! Thank you for helping us earn this slot. | 9/4/08 | Free | View In iTunes |
