Description

In honor of our nation's Black History Month, PBS brings you a wide selection of programs celebrating African American Heritage. Examine the history and stories of such celebrated African Americans as Dr. Martin Luther King, author and anthropologist Zora Neale Hurston, and the iconic Muhammad Ali.  Trace the lineage of participants from Chris Rock to Maya Angelou in African American Lives II, which draws on DNA analysis, genealogical research and family oral tradition to uncover their family's journey from Africa to the United States.  Follow the story of an African Prince who endured the humiliation of slavery without losing his dignity or hope for freedom in Prince Among Slaves. The Better Hour takes place decades later in British society where one man, inspired by faith, uses his political and social influence to abolish slavery in the British Empire. Discover the more recent events of our nation's first and only college lacrosse team at a historically black institution in The Morgan Lacrosse Story. Explore the rich and vibrant heritage and cultural contributions of African Americans through this special slate of programming offered from PBS.

Oprah

This collection is missing a great special from the series called "Oprah's Roots". I showed to my American history students and they loved it! Oprah and her family's story is fascinating, and a great way to understand the big picture of U.S. history.

African-American History

Great series. Best suited for adults over 21 due to it's documentary format. Teens might not find this exciting enough.

African American History is required.

This series is a start of something wonderful. I hope we all learn its lessons. Its lessons are (1) African Americans are people like everyone else and not inferior to anyone, and (2) we are human beings who have been treated inhumanly by other humans. We have overcome but still have a long way to go. When we have to start giving our teens fluff and filler to teach them history, they are already lost. It is my job as a parent to insure that my children learn this, not some school or a person of another race who has no interest in my humanity or of those I love.
