Legend of the Seeker vs Sword of Truth
I have read all 11 amazing Sword of Truth books and Debt of Bones, I have read them all multiple times and love the books A LOT. Whenever there is a movie or tv show that is based on books, it's just that...BASED...People always complain that the cinematic version is nowhere near as good as the book version for many reasons, the cinematic version just can't contain the scope the books hold, the content in them and as Dan Brown commented on Da Vinci Code, that people form the characters' and scenery in their minds and watching it on film may not coincide with what people imagined. As a devote fan of the books I can honestly say the show does not hold up to the books, yet I love the show still for the little things it contains from the books. Kahlan being in a Rada'Han, Richard captured by Denna then beaten by her when he asks to let Constance train him, the little "special smile" Kahlan gives Richard, Betsy the goat... the little things are endless, the quotes are endless. The show is made for entertainment and, as it's said in the credits, BASED on the books, so if people want to see everything the show is missing out on they can read the books, no one is being forced to read them but if they do they'll be in for a much wilder ride than the show from the many differences to the similarities. The books will always be special to me but the show is a more streamlined reminder as to why the books are so special. Find the enjoyment of the books in the books, find the enjoyment of the show in the show, they are two different mediums holding true to Richards core belief: "Your life is your own, rise up and live it."
It grows on you. One day, you'll realize you're in love with it.
Have to admit, I groaned the first time I saw this show. But then, something happened. And before I knew it, it had turned into my delectable little secret. Then I found out that others shared this particular vice. They knew they shouldn't like the show -- but they did. Heck, they loved it. And so do I!
Give it a chance. Except for one notable and painful exception, the acting is acceptable. The story is entertaining and the actors are easy on the eye. The costumes as basic but the backdrops/scenery are gorgeous. Every now and then, the writing is actually more than just capable. It's stunning.
I found that I felt good after watching this show. I wasn't depressed or upset. It was nice to watch something other than crime dramas. It was nice to see a good old-fashioned battle between good and evil. The show's very simplicity is, I think, what hooked me in the end, that and the fact that it's really a family show.
Despite all the sword fighting, you'll never once see a drop of blood. Now, if that's not pure fantasy, what is? :-)
Please excuse the nay sayers...
The nay sayers say it isn't like the books. Well, it isn't. And thank god it's not.
Two brief points:
1. When have they ever translated books onto the screen with any significant degree of accuracy? The answer is pretty much never. If you expect that, don't bother watching.
2. Would you really want to see Legend of the Seeker, scene for scene exactly like the books? I don't, that would be predictable, boring and repetitive.
This series is based around the heart of the books. They didn't try to re-create the books. Instead they took the values and basic plot and wove a new story more suitable to TV. Every week I am *thrilled* to see a new spin on the story I love so much. I am thrilled to see the characters find the same values in different ways. I am thrilled to see *more* of the same kinds of stories. And I am thrilled to see the characters I love become even more well developed.
So, accept it for what it is and enjoy it. I certainly do.
