Description
From AMC and Emmy® Award-winning writer and executive producer Matthew Weiner of The Sopranos comes Mad Men, a daring original series about the things we want and how far we'll go to get them. Set in New York City in 1960, Mad Men pulls the viewer into a provocative new world — the high-powered and glamorous "Golden Age" of advertising. Mad Men chronicles the lives of the ruthlessly competitive men and women of Madison Avenue, who understand that in life — as in their industry of manipulation and spin — success ultimately lies in how well they are able to market themselves. Mad Men stars Jon Hamm, Elisabeth Moss, Vincent Kartheiser, Christina Hendricks, and January Jones and guest stars John Slattery, Rosemarie DeWitt, Talia Balsam, and legendary stage and screen star Robert Morse.

Peels back the skin of the American Dream
The first episode of Mad Men was superb. It's great to see a show that does not glamorize this time period--that peels back the skin of the American Dream (the idealized vision that was invented by ad men and TV during this era and perpetuated during the Reagan years). The main character--Don--is a nihilist who has been traumatized by his service 15 years before in WWII. He is living for the moment, drowning his malaise in hedonism (smoking, drinking, sex). It was a shock to see where Don ended up after his long day of work. And it will be interesting to see if he pulls himself out of the downward spiral. The final shot of the pilot was as devastating and honest as anything I've seen on TV in recent years.
Fun and Intriguing Pilot
I just watched the pilot of Mad Men, and I was really impressed. They do an incredible job of transporting you back to 1960 with the costumes, smoking, drinking, topics of conversation and overall arrogance of the characters in their opinions. The acting was pretty superb to start, I would imagine it will only get better. Overall I really can't wait to see more, I just hope enough people tune into AMC so it can do well!
Fabulous capturing of the Zeitgeist!
The Art Decoration and Set Decoration drew me in--it's exactly the way I remember the 50's--the cars, clothes, furniture, food and drink, etc. The characters are also quite appealing and draw you in. I'm sure viewers under 30 think the storylines are too weird--typing pool, polio, overly-educated stay-at-home moms, the stigma of divorce--but that's the way it was. When they open the beer with a can opener--I almost forgot there were days before pop tops and easy open cans. And all the SMOKING and DRINKING--too true. I think this show is perfectly done and quite a find.
