Very good but still want more.
I want this to succeed. I want to see a shift in this direction now as the world slowly turns toward electronic paper and such. I want to see this type of media survive that change and as such want them to take the time to get their feet wet, experiment, and find what works and what doesn't. As the technology of both the medium and the creation tools continues to develop, I believe we will see even more synergy between comics and animation. As far as this Spider-Woman motion comic goes, I don't think this is as good as the Watchmen motion comic was, especially since this was designed to be a motion comic from the start as opposed to adapting an existing work. Don't get me wrong, this is still very good. Much better than some of the other dredge I have seen lately. The first of two problems I have with this is that I want more animation. From more life to the characters, especially during a dialog intense bus ride, to more subtle animation such as hair moving, background elements and so on. Shifting parallax scrolling and lighting effects can only go so far. Other motion comics have been done with more traditional artwork, so if Meleev is going to give us photo-realistic depth; I expect to see that depth in the character animations as well. It’s just what the brain wants. My second problem is that it is too short. I want more, which is a credit to the story. 10 minutes went by awfully fast and now I have to wait for the next one! The Watchmen motion comics were about 30 minutes per episode. I have a feeling I will enjoy this a lot more if I had a slew of episodes to watch at once. Speaking of which, a Season Pass option would be nice. In the end, if you’ve come this far because you a Bendis or Meleev fan, Spider-woman fan, Marvel Zombie, or just a fan of animation in general. Go ahead and fork over the .99 cents and give it a shot.
Decent
First, the art by Alex Maleev on this is gorgeous, as always. It's complimented well by the special effects, which are the highest quality we have seen yet on a motion comic. While the overall plot is interesting and well suited for a motion comic, the individual first episode feels like a prelude rather than an introductory chapter. You can see how it would fit nicely on a comics page, but here it does not work. The main reason for this is the poor quality of the acting, which in this story is required to do much of the heavy lifting. While the sound of the main character's voice is fitting, it does not feel like it is coming from the character, but from a person reading lines recording into a computer. Since there is no lip movement in the animation, the acting needs to compensate to achieve immersion into the story. Even though much of this episode is done in narration, the voice comes from another world and not the person shown on screen. The episode's other character in particular is very poorly acted, with strange enunciation and emphasis that is jarring and continues to keep you out of the world. Since this was only the first episode, there is hope that the acting will get better over time. Here, it serves as a deterrent to the story instead of a seamless enhancement to the comic.
Just watched the first Episode..and it's great.
I was a little nervous to try this out as a motion comic before reading the regular comic, but it really delivers on the promise that it would be different from other motion comics because it was being produced specifically for the medium as opposed to animating a regular comic. It really works as a hybrid of the mediums. This has a real gritty spy/noir feel with a little superhero mixed in. Alex Maleev's art is moody and has a style all its own - he is a true master. Like other Bendis/Maleev collaborations, the pacing is considered by many fans to be unconventional for standard American superhero comics, but it serves the story well. A great value at $.99. My minor criticisms would be that some Bendis' usually great dialogue sounds a little stilted read aloud (some of which could be attributed to the voice acting) and it might difficult for someone to come to this cold without knowing Spider-Woman's recent backstory. However, it is a great experience on the whole. Highly recommended.
