New Wild Everywhere (Deluxe Edition)

New Wild Everywhere (Deluxe Edition)

New Wild Everywhere takes the wispy atmospherics of Great Lake Swimmers' earlier works and turns them into a sort of alt-country. It seems like the band's marching from Canada over the plains and into the Southwest deserts, over to Bakersfield. With their previous album, 2009's Lost Channels, Toronto-based Tony Dekker and crew stumbled onto the beauty of Gene Clark, the wayward Byrds member who best understood heartbreak. The group made his sorrow their sorrow. New Wild Everywhere continues that streak. "The Great Exhale" pulses with the feel of Clark's last studio album, So Rebellious a Lover. High praise, indeed. But Dekker has been steadily evolving into a confident singer capable of bringing his smooth delivery into rockier terrain. With its vast country-rock sweep, "Changes with the Wind" throws the band into Chris Hillman's Flying Burrito Brothers territory. The ability to power up beyond the slow acoustics of many lonesome troubadours has benefitted Dekker, who's found a way to balance joy and disappointment into pure expression. The deluxe edition adds acoustic versions of many album tracks, along with other bonus cuts.
