Merlin WebM Player & Browser for iPhone
By Andrew Schreiber
This app is only available on the App Store for iOS devices.
Merlin version 1.0 gives you these powers:
|1| Play WebMs from Safari directly into a video player.
|2| Watch in fullscreen or overlay mode in app.
|3| Hear WebM audio or mute it.
 Play Gifs inline.
|5| Browse the web and watch video simultaneously.
Now in Merlin 2.0:
|6| Save videos locally and play them later
|7| Multiple tabs with independent video players.
|8| Dynamic WebM detection so Merlin is robust to website changes.
Merlin is tested and designed to work with 4chan boards.
A note on the handful of 1-3 star reviews: On February 27th 4chan made changes to the way WebMs are displayed on mobile, which broke Merlin's WebM detection. It took several days to get a fix out on the app store. People who had paid for Merlin were understandably upset.
As of version 2, Merlin's WebM detection is updated each time you open the app. If 4chan changes their WebM display again, it can be fixed the same day without needing to update the app. Thanks to those who reported the issue.
What's New in Version 2.0
1) Website changes won't stop detection of WebM videos. Thanks to all those who reported the WebM issue with 4chan on Febuary 27th-29th.
2) Save videos locally and play them later (as requested by:)
3) Multitabs (as requested by:)
4) Tap status bar to go to top of page
5) Assorted bug fixes and performance improvements
Overall this app is great. I couldn't stand not being able to see webm on safari. I like that you could save now, that's a huge plus I do have a few suggestions. 1. Custom folder names and folder amounts would be great, it would help with organization a lot. 2. Allow vertical playback when in landscape mode. Sometimes webms are phone videos and if you could rotate the screen while in landscape it would help a lot with clarity. 3. It would be very cool if Merlin could save gifs in addition to webms. That's also another thing that's annoying about Apple is that gif's don't save on photo roll. 4. Custom set home screen~sell explanatory.
Even with these few suggested changes this app is great! Keep up the good work.
While I do love this app, there are some minor issues that I'm still encountering.
First, despite recently upgrading to an iPad Air 2, I still seem the occasional staticky video, which isn't really that big a deal to me personally, but it should be something to be aware of.
Second, and more importantly, after a few months of use the app has grown from less than a Gb of my system memory to over 4 Gb. Now I assume this is due to webm files being saved into the app when opened, which is fine, I can only assume this is how it the app works. However there ought to be a way to clear out the "cached memory" in the app itself, apart from uninstalling and re-installing the software, which is what I ended up doing.
I really enjoy this app and want to be able to review it higher, however I've been experiencing a number of issues.
This app has an issue of randomly closing out on me when I close out the webm player. Of corse the issue being that I got this because it would allow me to view them. I would not mind this if every time the app closes all the way down it removes everything I had up at that moment.
There are also time I will open a webm file only to have nothing load and a single frame and the corresponding audio to repeat and never actually load anything else.
I really hope these issues can be resolved sooner then later. Over all it's a really great app, it just needs some fine tuning.
