Standing Ovation ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Playing this game is an exceptional experience! There are a lot of apps that take 2 things and put them together, but I never would have imagined classical music and a rhythm game. The gameplay is pretty easy—swipe the direction of the arrows while they are over the box. After a while it becomes hypnotic and you feel like you are in control of the little pixel orchestra. The style is very much in tune with modern rhythm games but this one feels more relaxed. It could be the pace and the fact that you are playing to classical music. My favorite track is the Rachmaninov piece. As a classical music fan, I'm glad the selection isn't just the ultra popular classics. I would like to hear more lesser known composers. The Chopin tune is amazing too.
The art is the other thing I love about this game! The pixel art reminds me of the games I grew up playing with my brother. Those chunky pixels bring me back to a time when games required you to use a little imagination to fill in the spaces. The animation of the little musicians are cute and I almost jumped when they started disappearing!
I hope there are more songs in the future and possibly some new challenges. The music is amazing! Most of the tracks are pretty piano heavy with chip tune elements sprinkled in. I recommend this game to anyone that is into classical music and old school games. I enjoyed it both on Apple TV and iPad. I look forward to seeing the games future development. 😃
Thank you!
Subpar on a good day
Epic orchestra is a subpar game on a good day. My main irk with it is that when I look at a rhythm game at this day and age, I expect innovation. I expect something new. This game is like the loser groove coaster. Everything falls down one track, but there is no actual difficulty, and while the concept is charming, charm doesn't prevent me from being bored out of my mind. Not only that, but rhythm games also can be hard and charming. Take theatrythm final fantasy. That game has an intense level of charm, with your little merry band of cute, little adventurers strolling down fields and fighting cute, little monsters. That game also has a difficulty level that makes it worth playing. This game has none of that. Aesthetics can get you somewhere, but the combination of gameplay concept and difficulty is so much more important than any other aspect of a game in this genre, and epic orchestra fails gloriously in that regard. At least it looks good while failing, like that one dumb hot chick in high school.
Almost Perfect!
5 Stars because the game concept is simple, yet so engaging. It has a "Guitar Hero" element where you have to swipe in the correct direction. I think it did a decent job with most of the songs, but I was slightly disappointed when this game's version of the "Maple Leaf Rag" didn't live up to the original, and sounded more like a marching band (not that I don't marching bands, but this wasn't a completely astounding version.). So I'm still giving it 5 stars because overall it was a great game.
Some reviews may say that the swiping doesn't work, but don't believe them because they probably swiped diagonally and got frustrated enough just to complain to other people about something that is entirely their fault.
