Nearly worthless


Let me start be saying I admire and support what Varo is trying to do. Banking and financial management tools are universally pretty bad. Mint had something great for a couple years early on but has now also joined the ranks of out-of-touch financial software. Varo has managed to do this right out of the gate. I am an early adopter of many new fintech services and I have not been impressed by anything in awhile, Varo included. They have tried to do too much too soon. They have not nailed any one key feature that would make me compelled to adopt them over anything else. Dashboard and overviews are less helpful then Mint. Money transfer functionality is a commodity but the experience here is worse then Venmo, PayPal, and Square Cash. The branded debit card functionality is worse than Simple, and not really any more useful than a traditional bank issued debit card. It feels like they had a vision for a delightful and comprehensive financial product and thought that all of this was really necessary for an MVP. However, all of the components are themselves MVPs and so the whole thing falls apart. I'd rather have a progressive dinner with a great appetizer, main course, and dessert with the requirement of moving around than having 3 barely edible courses under the same roof.

First, thank you for taking the time to provide such thoughtful feedback. It’s exactly the type of feedback that we not only value, but need, to make Varo the best banking (and app) experience for our customers.

When we started talking to customers, they told us that they wanted a solution to address the diversity and complexity of their financial lives. They were tired of jumping from app to app to see their full financial picture. So, three months ago, we set out to deliver a version of the app that had a breadth of features that spanned a person’s entire financial life (from personal financial management tools, to a deposit account, to savings,to loans), while knowing many improvements would need to be made. This breadth of financial tools is also part of our application for a national bank charter, which will allow us to better serve our customers.

We recognize that the current version of Varo is not perfect--there is room for improvement to make Varo as great as we know it can be. That’s why rapid iteration (based on customer insights) has been and will always be at the heart of the Varo development process. We’re excited to watch Varo continue to evolve and we hope you will be there to see it happen.

Best new app for Financial Services


Very impressive app. From what is now table stakes like Touch ID, ATM finder to the latest features to track expenses and income so that you can forecast your monthly cash flow. I love the ability to see my finances all in one place and have access to no fee ATMs. No monthly balance required, no monthly fee. The interface is simple, intuitive and offers a human touch with language like “Your financial forecast is Sunny” or “Can I help you with something” , and “I found something interesting on your spend on personal care. Do you have a minute?" vs. typical messaging from legacy financial institutions which can seem jarring. The app is generally easy to use and the ability to submit feedback and suggest features is a nice touch, allowing users to like previously submitted feature recommendations. There is adequate customer support with an FAQ section and even a 1-800 number if you need to speak to someone to resolve an issue.

Amazing support


Love love love this Bank! I got my debit card in less than a week of signing up! Customer service has always been amazing, and easy to reach as well which is not common amongst American banks. I actually took the time to read my contract, and clarified with a representative that what they mean by having the ability to transfer funds from other accounts was that I am able to withdraw funds from say, a chase account, into my Varo account. Once I had my card stolen out of my purse, reported the theft and fraudulent charges immediately, and Varo immediately shut off my card, refunded me, and express shipped a new card out to me. It was in my mailbox within two days. I hope one day we’ll see physical locations or more atms, transfer options, and faster check deposits, but this group is worth the wait!
