Editors’ Notes

You know why flashcards are famous? Because they work. And frankly, we think Tinycards work even better. This clever app—made by the people behind language-learning classic Duolingo—makes it easy to subscribe to topics ranging from famous landmarks to historical events, then receive tons of interactive cards to memorize. You can hear pronunciation, study illustrations, and unlock new decks as you progress—and it’s actually fun the whole time. Take that, flashcards.

Great start

I love the TinyCards platform and the design principles that guide the work DuoLingo is doing. The app is delightful and simple to use, and I'm truly happy that I can create and share my own flash cards. I am concerned though about the curation of user-generated content and the fact that so much of it is created without any eye to how it will eventually be used. TinyCards staff recently chose to highlight one such deck and it quickly became apparent that the way the deck is designed with questions on one side and complicated or simple answers on the other simply cannot work with the way the app is structured. One question asks for a date, another for a short response, when a card is juxtaposed with potential answers taken from other cards, the syntax is such that it's clear without knowing anything about the cards that only one answer could be correct. Furthermore, the app constantly shows you the cards and asks you to indicate whether you remember it or not. If a card deck is built correctly there is no reason to ask users to indicate whether they know the card. This really breaks up the flow of using decks. TinyCards should simply present that card again to the user and if the user answers incorrectly continue to show it.

Great product with fixable flaws

This is great app, probably even better than its sister app Duolingo. However, there are a couple of flaws:

* The biggest one is that, on missing a card, it is whisked away before I can even compare my wrong answer to the correct one. It should stay on screen until swiped away. This needs to be fixed.

* For language review, a better presentation of the initial card would be to have me type it in from a display of the answer. That is, the card would say “good: хорошо” and make me type in “хорошо” even on the first try. For any complicated phrase, the current mode has me see it, flunk it, type it in from the prompt which disappears as I type, and then asks me once more.

* The second introduction of a card is also too easy. The app might show “там” and “собака” and then immediately make me choose between them which is “dog”. Better to show “совака”, “собаку”, “собака” than the trivial memory test from two seconds ago. These cards seem more useful for later review than for immediate introduction.

* When editing a deck, display the front and back together and allow immediate editing of both. Perhaps an edit mode where the front and back of each card sit joined together on left and right, with pairs of cards scrolling horizontally as present. The current interface is too cute; a clumsy spreadsheet would be better than the current implementation.
