Amazing! But RNG and multiplatform concerns.

The system is beautiful, easy to pick up, but tons of strategic depth. Great diversity and a wonderful blend between CCG and a tactical turned based game, the latter of which is sorely lacking on mobile at least of PvP variants.

The game is fairly balanced, each faction has their own niche. I really dislike the coin flip cards with dodge and other random things as they massively cut back on skill and push it towards a coin flip. Luckily there are not to many of these, but boar in particular sees a lot of play. And the F2P system does feel a bit grindy, but not to bad. If these aspects where changed the game would be neat perfect. It would also be really nice to have Async play, or at least a mode with long turns.

But now my biggest concern, I have really enjoyed playing it on mobile and was in desperate search of a game like this for mobile. I liked it so much I even invested a good bit of money, and decided I wanted it on my PC but was shocked to find the game needed to be purchased separately, not only is that bad, but I am not even sure if the game is cross platform or if I would be starting from scratch. Cross platform, and being consistent between f2p model and a paid game between the platforms needs to be dealt with.

Downgrade from the original

As an avid player of the first Hero Academy, I was really excited for this game to come out. Don’t be fooled, this is not the same game. The 5 action points have been changed to the nauseatingly familiar mana system. This effectively slows the game to a crawl. Remember in the first game where there were heroes all over the board and there were so many possibilities? Those days are gone. I’m a huge fan of Hero Academy. This isn’t Hero Academy the way I like it.

Edit: Asynchronous multiplayer desperately needs to come back. I loved playing the original because it was easy for me to take 1 minute and make my move. I may not have 10-15 to sit and play a whole game.

My other issue is the extreme simplicity of the HP and attack strength. In the original, for example, the archer had a 300 base attack strength. When shooting a dwarf bombardier with a shield, that would reduce it 20%, so now doing 240 damage. If standing next to a paladin, that was an extra 5% so now the damage was only 225. Offense and defense both required planning and some basic mathematics even. Winning felt like an intellectual accomplishment when the math just worked out. Now, if you can add or subtract by one, you’re pretty much equipped.

Developer Response

Thank you for playing Hero Academy 2 and for taking the time to send in this feedback! We understand that returning players simply prefer the classic style game play, but do hope the real-time combat flow and pacing works well and feels good to returning players. We’ve received a lot of feedback asking for a return of optional asynchronous Duels, and our teams continue to work and improve Hero Academy 2 to make it enjoyable for all our players. We will be sure to forward your feedback over to our Development Teams, and hope you will give us another chance in the future!

Best game one the App Store

I don’t remember playing the original, but I love Hero Academy 2. I’ve read reviews that say it’s not as good as the original. I personally don’t mind the pace of the game. I just like to play the game for what it is.
Every match is a fun experience, even if I lose. Trying different tactics and deciding which hero/weapon/spell to use is just fun. You get rewarded nicely even if you don’t progress much in the rankings.
It’s like Hearthstone with the card collection, but you get to decide where to move your heroes around, which is an exciting tactical endeavor in each match. The graphics are beautiful, the effects are beautiful, and the voices are fun and not annoying. I don’t feel like I have to pay to collect cards and have fun.
This is my favorite game on the App Store. I’m constantly searching the store for role playing/strategy games that can hold my interest for a long time. I think I’ve found the perfect one for me.
