Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. Facebook doesn’t run GPS in the background unless you give us permission by turning on optional features that require this.
What's New in Version 25.0
Thanks for using Facebook! To make our app better for you, we bring updates to the App Store every 2 weeks. You can update the app automatically (without checking back here) by going to Settings > iTunes & App Store > Automatic Downloads and turning on Updates.
Every update of our Facebook app includes improvements for speed and reliability. As other new features become available, we’ll highlight those for you in the app.
There are updates, but you don't see/feel them.
2/28 - another update. None of the problems below were fixed. Now one more: loading items on news feed will make the app freeze, and killing it to return to the app won't help.
Surely the updates that the app receives every other week is a good thing. But every time it makes changes that you DO see, are ones that are the most annoying and not very constructive. The last change they made was moved Messenger OUT of the Facebook app itself, and then have to make you download a separate app to use the same function. That's not a good experience and very frustrating. There is also a bug that seems to be unnoticed ever since the app allows videos to be played inline in the feeds. When you have a video playing, if you are also playing music, the app will automatically turn down the volume of your own music, so you can hear the audio from the video. This is fine, if the app is smart enough to give me back my music to normal volume afterwards, but it doesn't, and will only resume normal after killing the app. For some reasons, apps like Instagram and whatsapp (both of which are now under the Facebook empire) do multimedia sharing and messaging better. Why not combine all three, or just let the Facebook app does its best and only job - news feed.
FB used to be great
Once upon a time about 6-7 years ago, FB was great. It was a true, altruistic method of connecting with friends and family. Unfortunately, it sold out to greater influences and as such, the current state of FB reflects this: plethora of complaints from users wherein no improvements based on them are made, an app that leaves a lot to be desired (disorganized newsfeed, difficult to find content, forcing businesses to pay to boost their posts, removing messenger from within the app, the list goes on and on).
Come on FB, return to where you started: as a way to connect people with their friends, families, and for them to interact and share their lives in a fun way.
Nowadays it must be asked what FBs motives are. Sadly, the desire to care for their subscribers with whom without FB would not exist seems to not exist from FB aspect. They seem to care only about earning money and tracking our every move.
The app can't run more than a few minutes without crashing. It's the absolute most frustrating thing in the world. I can't remember the last time I was able to read an entire article without having to relaunch the app and search for the article through the unstable time flow of multiple pages. The company can spend hundreds of millions (Hell, billions!) acquiring new assets, yet they can't even publish a moderately responsive/capable app for their flagship site? What a joke. This is the worst app I have on my iPhone and iPad. Don't use it. Just use safari to browse Facebook; it's also frustrating and irritably buggy but crashes far less often. Not to mention the time flow isn't constantly disturbed, displacing you from the content you were in the midst of.
