Terrible anti-community money grab by VZ
Verizon bought this company and merged it into something called “Oath” – which is an attempt by VZ to sell ads and user data. Jump to December 2018: the new leadership that Big Red installed at tumblr kowtows to his corporate overlords and decides to ban “NSFW” content.
Tumblr has never been a site/platform for children. It was communities of people posting all sorts of content, much of it including nudity, sex, erotica, and yes, memes and videos of cats. But like most media platforms in 2018, there are also sections of the site promoting racism, Nazism, and anti-LGBTQ views that are harmful to real people, as well as bots running wild & free. Tumblr, Verizon, and Oath decides that the Nazis were okay, but the sex, or nude art, or explicit content… well that’s just a bridge too far.
To recap: Tumblr and Verizon think Nazis are a-okay 👌! Tumblr also, apparently, thinks the porn bot problem is fine too (probably because it simulates platform engagement, which again, helps them sell ads).
The community is angry right now. People who built tumblr into what is is today are people who shared content that Oath & Tumblr now believes is not conducive to selling ads and user data, so they are banning that content! Rather than actually working to create a way to efficiently and accurately filter “SFW” and “NSFW” from feeds – and giving users the ability to decide what they want to see – Tumblr has taken the laziest of routes and is implementing an untrained & unreliable algorithm that flags all sorts of content that clearly wouldn’t be seen by any reasonable human being as not safe for work. (Example: I posted a photo of a mannequin and the tumblr algorithm flagged it as explicit!) But because they are scared of Apple, and apparently are totally inept when it comes to selling ads (I mean, Pornhub and similar sites don’t seem to have any issues selling ads next to NSFW content), they’ve decided to move forward with this terrible system that’s not only user-hostile, but also punishes the communities that helped tumblr become popular in the first place. For these reasons, I have no choice but to give this terrible app 1-star for the harm it’s doing to communities of people who just wanted to connect with each other and share things about their lives and experiences.
It’s like an abusive relationship
I’ve been using tumblr for years and at this point I can’t stop. The staff tell us “it’s going to get better” but it never does. Every “update” and “patch” further breaks the platform. The main reason I stay here is because of the format of posts and the posts are still in chronological order. Don’t even download it at this point. Apple should’ve never brought this hell-site back.
Censorship killed tumbler
I’m deleting it due to the new censorship rule - pity
