TripIt is a "Must Have" Despite a Few Shortcomings

I use TripIt's paid service nearly every day, and find it indispensable. The customizable "alerts" feature alone has saved me countless headaches due to changed gates or cancelled & rebooked flights. It's not that you couldn't find this out elsewhere. Notably, United's EasyTravel alerts have been lifesavers before. But TripIt consolidates everything in one place in a standardized carrier-neutral way. It also has a fairly flexible system (though it is a premium fee service) for allowing travel arrangers to manage the itineraries of several persons at once. I haven't used that particular service myself, but my colleagues who have seem very happy about it.

The one thing that still displeased me about the TripIt app for IOS is that access controls and shared group access are unsophisticated: TripIt might want to refactor its ideas about access control and create "views" so that friends, groups and travel arrangers might see different views of the TripIt customer's travels.

I don't want to share my non-work trips with my friends, I don't want to share my personal travel with my workgroup, and I don't want to create multiple TripIt personas. I doubt I'm alone in this. So, I just don't share with anyone other than my immediate family.

Meh... TripIt needs to step up their interface.

I've been using Kayak for years to track my trips. I love their interface. Thought I'd give TripIt Pro a try since I get it through Concur. I like the fact it tried to import in all my trips from my emails automatically. That is about the only feature that works well. Although there were a few errors. It imported in canceled reservations as well.

I hated the trip page on this app when you click into a trip. It just shows the symbol icons of flights, car, and hotels. It doesn't show you any information until you click on it. This is where Kayak is far superior! I can see most of the details, flight number, hotel name and rental car all from the main trip page. If I need more info like the actual email receipt I can click into it. TripIt does not offer that. The big map is meaningless. It looks ok but takes up so much space on the screen. Then right under it is basically empty for half the screen. This screen needs some serious updating.

The rewards tracking feature was lackluster as well. I use AwardWallet for my tracking and that tool is far superior. I was hoping TripIt can replace these 2 apps that I use but it looks like TripIt tries to do a lot but it doesn't do any of it well. I'll continue to use it for a few weeks to see if I will change my mind. For right now....mehhh not impressed.

Great app for road warriors or traveling families

I have used Tripit and Tripit pro for at least 18 months and it is a very convenient app to have on my phone. I travel a lot on business and I also have lots of family that I am responsible for heir travel arrangements. I keep my flight, hotel, dinner and event stuff on Tripit and it really does put all this information at your fingertips. All you have to do is forward the email confirmations from the hotels or airlines to Tripit and it really is entered in accurately.

With that said, mothers are a few things you need to know: if a flight number changes, the app won't update it. If the flight is just late, no problem. Also, Tripit is different on different formats. Study it on a full computer screen , then study it on an IPD and then iPhone. If you have any problems, they can be fixed on the computer version. I still travel with hard copy confirms but more out of habit than really needing them. I now have my entire family using the app, which makes it easy on me. They aren't calling me anymore about their flight info. A great think about having a flight canceled is that Tripit will research the available flights immediately. That keeps me one step ahead of the other people scrambling for the next flight.
