App still is bad, limited to D1 athletics only football/basketball
I've updated to the iPhone 6 plus and the app seems to work better. No direct in game, goal for goal, coverage for NCAA D1 men's ice hockey. Now updates available on when scores change or periods begin or end. Same with NCAA baseball or softball. No run updates or start/end of innings. Just general final scores and no write ups. No options for D2 or D3 sports either, especially basketball. Yet, ESPN claims to be the leader in this area but ESPN does not seem to believe that these other sports or divisions provide any value to the consumers out there who are using the app. The app is more geared to generating ads than providing scoring updates.
The app is horrible. My OS is up to date but the app just seems to be more focused on loading up the ads than the scores and stories. When I open the app, it shows the scores from the last time it loaded, which might be 1-2 days ago and the app takes forever to load. Just pathetic!
I've downloaded Yahoo! Sports app today & light years difference compared to the ESPN app. Yahoo! Sports loads extremely quickly, has more features & less ads. Better fix your app ESPN, you competition has arrived & loyal users to your app will start the migration to Yahoo! Sports or other apps
It's convenient and overall pretty good
Great to check scores/watch highlights at a button's touch. I also like that my selected team faves rise to the top of the scores page.
The issues are that: (1) the app cuts out pretty routinely, closing unexpectedly and repeatedly, (2) you have to watch a commercial, typically the same exact one (i.e., Axe, I'm looking at you) before watching any and every vid, (3) the "Now" feed is almost worthless given I'm following who I want to follow and it generally ends up being the same talking-head with several posts in a row, with a limit as to how far back in time the feed goes, and (4) it's typically slow and choppy to load, even with fast connections, requiring you to swipe out and reopen the app, sometimes multiple times - and, once loaded scrolling within a page and switching pages is choppy and often delays.
These issues are ongoing and have continued over years, and it'd be great if there was some improvement on some of them.
It could be great
I use the ESPN app very regularly, and I wish I could use it exclusively. I miss the feature that used to tell what TV channel each game was on. The only reason I assume they removed this feature is that they do not want to advertise for other networks. It is frustrating as I used to be able to click on the ESPN app and instantly know when and where each game was televised, the odds, and it was all at my fingertips by my favorite teams and sports. Now I have to use several apps to accomplish this including Bleacher Report, TV Guide, BTN2Go, and others. It seems like each update to this app becomes less user friendly. Sadly I can imagine a day sooner than later that I am forced to delete the ESPN app as it becomes more worthless with every update.
