Customer Reviews

Finally warming up to Waze....

I hated this app the first day I used it and ended up deleting it. There was so much crap being displayed on the map, you couldn't see the map. I was driving with a friend a few weeks ago and I liked the navigation app he was using and to my surprise it was Waze! He said that if you take the time to go thru all of the settings, you can turn off 90% of the unneeded stuff. When I did that, it was actually a great app. Waze has taken me home different ways that I never knew existed and saved me valuable time. After several times, these new routes are becoming part of my normal routes to and from work. I like the warnings that pop up for traffic, stalled cars, heavy traffic, bad weather, or cops set up with radar on the side of the road. It's not safe trying to report these things in the Waze app while driving. Sometimes the Waze will pop up a window asking you if you are now in heavy traffic and asks for a quick yes or no. I started Waze for my drive home and before I pushed anything, it asked me if I was heading home, so I only had to say yes. That was a very nice touch! I still have my Garmin with traffic info for comparison and my Garmin is like talking to a rock compared to Waze. I still use the SigAlert app for traffic comparison to Waze. This is an awesome app for free, just go thru the settings to tailor it to what you like. That's my 2 cents.

Mostly reliable navigation

I use waze all the time to avoid delays when driving or calculate how long a regular route might be at a certain time of day. However I use it in combination with google maps for directions, because as other people have said, waze doesn't give much advice on which lane to be in for a highway exit, or other specifics that can make you miss a step or make a dangerous lane change to avoid missing a step. By keeping the noise mode on alerts only, this app has allowed me to escape or avoid awful traffic jams, for the most part. I don't know if it has to do with my own phone service data availability or problems with the app, but occasionally it won't know about a huge traffic jam until I'm already in it, which is frustrating. In those cases my route will instantly go from clear to red the minute I am stuck, and I just don't know why those cases aren't predicted sooner (seeing as most of the time the app works fine.) Overall I like the app, but don't let it steer you in crazy directions all the time. Sometimes it makes up traffic that doesn't exist or maybe a problem has already been cleared up and it hasn't been updated through the app yet.. So be wary before you take that early exit off the highway if there's no visible delays ahead. That's my primary warning, use this app as a general guide not as the be all end all.

Waxed works but

Good work, but I have noticed that it generally underestimates the time to destination, especially on busy days.
The worst thing is to tell people that I will be there in 10 minutes and then it takes an extra 10. Well, I guess there is a limit in estimation accuracy since if I miss a green light by one second and have to wait for 2 minutes, it would be reasonable for an add-on of two minutes. However, when on a 10 minute path it takes 20, I think there is space for improvement. I do not think it is me driving particularly slow and missing a bunch of green lights. On the other hand on open traffic it estimates pretty well.

I was using Google navigation until I have upgraded from my dinosaur my touch to iPhone 6s and I feel like Google's time estimation is much better on traffic. I still sometimes use Google Nav; however, its downside is that it generally remains on main roads (this is also true for Apple navigation, which seems to be getting better nowadays: works with watch and you can ask Siri to take you somewhere, it also keeps on with walking directions once you park your car) and has less flexibility in using side roads, which sometimes prove to be much faster. Waze does a good job on this as long as the traffic on the alternate road is as expected.
