Crashes A LOT
Seems like I experience a lot of crashes with Mercury now after getting my iPhone 6 Plus. I constantly open new tabs and browse very quickly, but I regularly close tabs after I've viewed them so that I don't have more than a few open at any given time.
However, once in awhile Mercury will crash for whatever reason. Just now, for instance, I had four tabs open and I've been browsing for a few hours now; I tapped the open tabs button to view one of the background pages I had open, and it crashed. Reopened and tapped button again; crashed. Again; crashed. Reopened to find myself on the speed dial and all my tabs closed, whatever, I'll start over I guess. Tapped the tab button and it crashed AGAIN; opened multitasking and quit the app, reopened and tapped the button and it STILL crashes every time. Nothing is open in the app, but it continues to crash.
I've temporarily fixed this a couple times by deleting the app and reinstalling, but that removes all my app settings, accounts, bookmarks, etc. every time I have to do it, and the crashes eventually return. I'm stuck with a broken, unstable application basically holding all my saved downloads/bookmarks hostage with the possibility of a crash every time I tap a button, or no more Mercury, and it's starting to become infuriating. Anyone else experiencing problems like this?
Suspicious with Touch ID problem
After I installed the app and go through a few webpages to test the speed, I notice a popup "Touch ID for Mercury" and it requires my fingerprint or password and it will keep coming up if I click cancel and I've gone through the setting of the app and noticed that there's no Touch ID related option, so why does it ask me? It shows up usually when you first open up a website after you forced close the app, and also when you choose "clear everything" in privacy section (despite I have not set a passcode for the app) or click on "auto fill form" section (not even go to select turn it on or off yet). I've tried to repeat this same popup many times and there was one time when I get to the app switcher after prompted to put in my fingerprint and there's this card of app that's black in the app switcher and it's called "user authentication" and I don't know what's it for but it seems to relate to the Touch ID and the system privacy so I don't know why an app would required that every time I open a normal website. Really suspicious!
Happy so far
I downloaded this last night after getting fed-up with the increasingly intrusive pop-up adds, and even more disturbing the trend of ads to redirect me to iTunes when using Safari. Really, Apple needs to address these pirating practices. Until they do, I researched and came across Mercury web browser. Nice! Fast, clean. Even nicer, it has Adblocker built-in. I tested it at a few of the sites that had been egregiously problematic and so far so good. One feature I would have enjoyed seeing would have been a more direct way to import my bookmarks from Safari, than having to import a file or via iTunes. Other than that, unless this begins to crash or something, this will be the browser I recommend to friends who are as exasperated with Safari as I am.
