Update: March 27,2014
Sure, it's pretty. Ok so I can give the barista a tip, that's nice. But where's the menu, nutrition facts, and overall food information?!? That was one of my favorite things about this app and now it's removed. It's probably harsh to go from five stars to one but I'm doing so because now I'll have to use the website which is what I like to avoid when there's an app available for something. Starbucks does a lot of seasonal drinks/foods and I need to know the nutrition facts before ordering, I'm now no longer able to do this conveniently from the app. This is unfortunate.
I'm so surprised that people are having issues with this app. It's super convenient and easy to use. It works with passbook now so it pops up whenever I'm at my favorite location, I can download the song of the week without having to get the little cards. My card balance updates immediately (although passbook takes a minute to reload) and I've not once had it crash on me... I also reload my card once a week and not once have I had an issue with it not working. I've even reloaded a few times while standing in line on the occasions that I've forgotten to reload it. I'm a gold card user as well so I literally use this app several times a week.
I will update this review if I start having issues but as of today it's been extremely convenient and I'm still utterly confused by the negative reviews on here.
Will delete soon
I initially found the app to be convenient until I heard of the update. First, I'd rather not have an awkward encounter picking up morning coffee. I find it unfair having to explain to a barista that messes up my drink 50% of the time that no, I wouldn't like to tip them.
First of all, I was a server for 9 years and made 2.13/hr w/out benefits. These guys make min wage, plus tips, plus benefits. I'm starting to agree with some of those that say 'tipping is getting out of hand'. I'm all for leaving over 20-30% where it's deserved (always) and tipping 2-3 dollars for the barista that I feel is exceptional, which I'm sorry, is few and far between on the locations en route to work and school. Errors are consistent at the 2 Starbucks I stop at almost every day of the week although I order the same thing every time.
I'll delete the app and just use the gold card so I never ever have to update. I think this feature is a poor idea and unfortunately I foresee a large loss of profit. I advise you retract the decision before it's too late and cautiously approach these types of changes in the future.
The Starbucks on campus and Target get paid well enough they don't accept tips. They all rarely mess up my drink. The CEO made 29 million last year...and he's asking customers to pay them more?! Yikes
I'd give no stars if it was available
New app upgrade is a bunch of crap. First off it doesn't keep my login info and half the time my password doesn't work even when it is correct- I can always log I to the web so I know the password is right. Second you removed the easy to access nutritional information and the easy store locator and replaced with a bunch of foo foo crap that while pretty eye candy is not helpful to me at all. Also a little concerned about the shake to pay- as it doesn't work- and now instead of one click to pay it's three not to mention I did not want my gold card listed first so that ever hacker can now quickly see I have a balance. Also- tipping is set up dumb... Why restrict me to such dumb amounts and why leave my transaction open now for two hours for adding a tip- more and more security concerns-- oh and now it links up with all my other social media apps so now my previously intimate guilty pleasure addiction to Starbucks is now shared community wide guess it's time to go the direction I've been considering and buy the Jura to kick my 300$ a month Starbucks habit! Thanks for releasing a crappy app to help push this decision along. Oh the new app icon looks nice.
