Customer Reviews

Server issues & Player attitudes hurt this fine app

Functionally the Scrabble game is excellent. But application support is hideous: for almost two weeks recently the app could not be played. Once restored a number of games were forfeited to the opponent since I had supposedly had taken too long to respond, even though the server was the cause. Yes, it's only a game, but clearly the software company has little concern for users.
I have played a number of games that drag on for over a month. The casual "I don't really care" user abounds, with many stopping play in midstream--the "I have to win user" who quits when not winning. These are persons I did not expect to meet, so something to watch out for. And, yes, the server problem comes back from time to time for shorter periods. For all the years this software has been around, could they not keep it working? The have had plenty of practice. Developers: a well-earned zero. Players: some excellent people here but many not worth a dime.
App: functionally very good, server stinks.

I have been playing this game on my phone for years against the computer and have changed my goal to counting the words the computer plays that are not in the MW Dictionary. I have, by no means, a complete list of incorrect words (approximately 100) that have been played at several levels of difficulty including boult, wigger, taiko, oik, donair, ronin, laddiest, burfy, rumpot, elven, goonda, and trefy. (Even some of these words are changed as I write them because they are not words!) There are words that are abbreviations which are allowed by the computer (fah/Fahrenheit) but not permitted for me. In a way, it's more fun making note of the error words than winning points or to win in spite of the error words because you don't know if the error words are nouns you can make into a plural or a verb to change tense! I have tried to write to the app originator but haven't had the opportunity to comment until this review opportunity came up as I play the game for the first time on my iPad mini.

As compared to Words With Friends

-- quicker play time, as players cannot wait two weeks to make their next play as they can in WWF
-- love the Teacher feature, which allows me to see moves I could have made and therefore makes me a better player
-- I grew up with Scrabble, I like that they have official lists and dictionaries that they use and that I can download, there is lots of online support from regional Scrabble clubs like lists of all the two and three letter words
-- there have been perfectly legit words that I've tried to play in WWF that it would not take, one was "realtor"
-- my only critique of Scrabble app is that it crashes a great deal when I am trying to play timed games with random opponents, and when it does I lose the game and so it brings down my ranking
