The New Yorker Magazine app delivers a signature mix of reporting and commentary on politics, foreign affairs, business, technology, popular culture, and the arts, along with humor, fiction, poetry, and cartoons. The app takes readers beyond the weekly print edition with multimedia enhancements and features, including slide shows, videos, and audio recordings of New Yorker fiction writers and poets reading their work.
The New Yorker, founded in 1925, publishes the best writers of its time and has received more National Magazine Awards than any other magazine, for its groundbreaking reporting, authoritative analysis, and creative inspiration. In 2016, it became the first magazine to be honored by the Pulitzer Prize for its writing, winning two awards.

Worse than worthles
I subscribed to a full year of The New Yorker through the Apple App Store (first mistake). After a few issues of trying to read articles on the iPad app as they hiccuped and jumped around every few seconds due to flashing adverts (I can only surmise that is the cause), I gave up and contacted The New Yorker for a refund. They referred me back to the Apple App Store who, in turn, denied me any refund. I can now only wait out the wasted year's subscription hoping The New Yorker will improve the app before my year runs out. So I check into the app from time to time to see if there's any improvement. To further consternation, I've had trouble logging into the NY app numerous times and must contact their customer support each time to get back in. My assessment - Apple doesn't care; no incentive to. The New Yorker needs to get back to the idea that its readers want to read its top-notch writing, have an attention span beyond five seconds, and do not want to be constantly distracted with the whistle-calls of flashing ads.
Good content, bad app
I like the New Yorker's content, and bought a digital subscription because you can't test drive the app without one (at least, it didn't provide me with any sample content to try it out with).
There are so many things wrong with this app: It generally feels like an app that was written 5 years ago and never updated, and it looks like they were far more focused on replicating the look of the print magazine than making the app usable. Navigation relies on a pop-up slider along the bottom of the screen. It says that the subscription will give you access to "the archive", but you can't actually read old magazines throught he app-- you have to purchase previous editions at $9 each. You still get ads, even though you're paying for the subscription-- and ok, fair enough, that's the case with the print magazine too, but it means you're better off reading through a web browser with an ad-blocker.
Even as a fan of the magazine, I don't recommend this app.
crahed while reading and returns to main menu
I love the New Yorker and the writing of course cannot be beat. But the technology and the user experience has a long way to go. It often crashes while you're reading – – this is especially frustrating when it's a very long article – – and returns you to the main menu. I think you should be able to search for older articles from anywhere. Additionally I just don't find the interface optimized for user experience. It is too issue-centered; why not have a much broader way to read say all political stories or all cartoons for all time? I'd also like to see a way to bookmark a long article so you can come back to where you were after closing the app or after turning off the phone. I just think this needs more work, particularly for the cost.
