Great App for 3 years and beyond.
I've seen a lot of 1 star reviews and I can't agree with any of them. One was complaining about features that they said were random but are controlled by a tap (I.e to switch between 30 second jumps and chapter jumps, just tap the surrounding screen and it will change) and others that say books lag and jump when I've never had that happen in 50+ titles on 4 different devices, over 3 years. The app might have crashed 3 times in 3 years and I attribute that to the sub-par, out of date device I was using at the time. What no one mentions is that Audible the company is awesome, not just the app. When you have a subscription the company treats you like gold. I've called in over a dozen times to refund books for credits to buy and listen to different ones. Always quick, and helpful they are and will even give you suggestions based on your library if you wanted. I've never had a problem with the sleep timer, or syncing to my latest point when jumping from device to device. I'm a full time driver and wouldn't have learn 1/5 of the words I know today if not for the application. It's a 5 Star, don't let the naysayers who might have used it for a week sway you, the purchase to download process is ridiculously simple and mirrors the process of Amazons other reader, Kindle. Top 5 App for me in the 6 years I've owned an iPhone.
One of my favorite apps
I use Audible ALL the time!! Unlike a lot of reviewers for this update, glitches have been negligible for me [iPhone 4s, iOS 8.4]; and I basically never remove the headphones (seriously, since Apr 2014, I racked up >3mo,26d of listening... and nearly 0 problems). It's so much easier for me to get to the books I want to read if I can listen to them while getting work done! It's perfect for lab work, driving, and any other activity that allows for the mind to wander. Through all versions I’ve used, there’s been largely glitch-free functionality. When I do encounter issues, I find they're very often resolved in the next update. Updates have also often included changes reflecting [reviews / feedback / suggestions]—nice to know Audible’s customer support is listening (and continually improving)… unlike some Corp’s I can think of. I just don't understand the 1-star reviews this time (maybe I'm just lucky). There are a couple little things that I’d like to change, like switching some buttons on/off the main screen instead of menu screen (e.g. I’d replace the “chapters” button with the main “bookmarks” menu button). Of course, I’d like it if the Audible book selection was more expansive, but it’s pretty darn good and always improving. Now if they'd just find some poor sucker to read textbooks, then I'd be set :). iPhone 4s, iOS 8.4.
Might be time to cancel my Audible subscription
There really should be a way to rate something no stars. After all, it doesn’t work at all after any updates. I had the apparently common black screen that made it impossible to use the app after an update. Again. Of course, I discovered that while getting in my car for my commute, so I could neither delete and download it again, nor use it at all. Isn’t the point to this app that you can listen to your books while on the go? So this app can not fulfill its function.
I deleted it and redownloaded it, but of course, it lost all record of what I’ve read and where I was at in the book I was listening to. Again. At least I think it lost that, because I can’t even select the book! (It is under the “All Titles”, “Recent” … widget. I can pull down to see it, but then I can’t select it when pulling down the display.) This app is as bad as any app I have ever tried to use.
I think I know how this happens. I’m actually a pretty talented, older developer, and I have been contacted about managing for Amazon’s development teams. What I’ve heard about their development environment has scared me off, and clearly scares off good developers. Because no good developer would ever release such crap. Their cutthroat environment actively discourages teamwork, and it shows in this app. If you routinely can’t use the app, why pay for the service?
