Bug with train times
I nearly missed my train because the "My Trips" tab in the "Account/Trips" display showed departure an hour later than it actually was. If you View the trip, the "Trip Details" page does have the correct time. This only seems to happen if you're traveling across time zones; for instance, the Wolverine running between Chicago and Michigan (between Centeral and Eastern Time). The 352 Wolverine showed a departure of 1:16pm out of Chicago on the "Account/Trips" display, however, the actual departure time was 12:16pm, which you wouldn't know if you didn't click through to the "Trip Details" display.
Otherwise, this has a decent initial set of features. I would rate it higher, if it weren't for the severity of the time bug.
It should also be a lot easier than it currently is to find out when a train is estimated to arrive at a station. Picking a station should be sufficient to see a list of train arrival and departure times at that station. Adding a train number, a day, time of day, to/from city, etc. should all be optional. (Particularly frustrating for those of us currently dealing with the highly unreliable Wolverine line.)
I like it. A lot.
Having downloaded hundreds of apps, there are probably less than twenty that I use on a regular basis. Amtrak is one of them. Is it perfect? No. I didn't like that the booking screens made me scroll down to find the 'Continue' button, and the total is in tiny font at the bottom. But now that I know these quirks, I use it with confidence to book my tickets. And having used rail a lot in Europe, being able to get an eticket barcode in my app, and being able to add it to Passbook, all I can say is wow! Amtrak's ticket process is light years ahead. I'll happily tolerate a few things in the app cosmetics for a while for something this useful. I'll hold onto my fifth star until I see an ipad version and a bit more design thought put into the reservation screens. But thank you Amtrak for giving me the peace of mind of having my ticket on my phone and not having to wait in line at the station to pick up a boarding pass at the ticket machine.
Could use some added features, otherwise decent
The calendar bug was fixed in 2015.
The time zone boundary issue remains. I recommend editing your calendar appointments for reservations and changing them to the correct time zone. Also be sure the clock on your device is set properly. For all users, I suggest you add your boarding passes to Apple Wallet •and• save the reservation confirmation PDF to iBooks for every trip, in case internet service is unavailable where you board. There's nothing wrong with too much excessive redundancy and repetition.
I am unable to get the train status to default to today's date, so if I haven't used the status section lately, it will try for five days ago. I contacted Amtrak regarding it and they said it did not ocur on their test devices, so I'm special.
I have a whole bunch of favorite stations, too many in fact. An added "default itinerary" (stations, route or train number, et cetera) would be welcome. Also, being able to look up or import multi-city trips, trips purchased with Guest Rewards points or voichers, and other "complicated" reservations would make this app better than just decent, but for the time being, it works reasonably well.
I am glad to hear that the app is due for a major redesign with improvements.
All in all, it's decent, yet with room for improvement. I look forward to the update.
